Anxious Thoughts Newcastle Hypnotherapy

Newcastle Hypnotherapy offers help and coaching to assist you in finding freedom from your anxious thoughts.

The trouble with anxious thoughts is they are very difficult to stop and they are just about impossible to stop with other thoughts. After all how do you stop a cloud with a cloud or a wave with a wave?

Anxious thoughts, when they run wild, changing how you feel, yes thoughts can change your emotional state, are usually non-conscious ways of trying to discover solutions, ways out of problems that may even be unsolvable.

Hypnotherapy Newcastle Anxious Thoughts

There are lots of wonderful ideas such as mindfullness and lately three principles that advocate a psychological approach to a solution. Sometimes a person actually get’s the concept of ‘just thoughts’ more often than not you don’t.

Approaches like Buddhism or Avedavidanta are life long practices where some form of Yoga ( Hatha or even Raja ) are essential aspects of doing more than just psychological development.  They are, at least initially, effortful practice.

Hypnotherapy Newcastle for Anxiety is more than a quick fix. You will need to address the behaviours that are creating anxiety and will require effort to create new habits and also to drop problematic habits.

We live in a technological age, where many people are wanting a quick fix to everything. And you have to check your own honest experience here, it usually doesn’t happen that way no matter how many self books or online apps you have. At least not for the real problems you face in life.

If these quick fixes or ‘life hacks’ ( I hate that term ), which are essentially effortless, really worked, for instance the UK governments appalling diet advice to combat obesity and metabolic syndrome, we would be seeing real change in peoples wellbeing, mental health and positive human interactions. We are not.

Trying to pause, stop and change negative anxious and stress causing thoughts with a positive ones is challenging at best. Getting the concept, ‘its just thoughts’, into practice takes a kind of committed effort. Making changes with concepts alone and missing the practical experience seems doomed to fail.

You are much more than your thoughts. You are your behaviours ( which may include thoughts ), your relationships and your environment. You are a very complex system of interactions and drives and importantly habits.

To get help and assistance making changes to anxious thoughts with Newcastle Hypnotherapy you can consider making changes in both your environment and your behaviours gives a great deal of scope to discover yourself what works best for you. This is almost certain to include stopping certain behaviours in specific environments.

If you take a careful and critical exploration of your habits and environment, you could find as an example that you really have no need to check your phone anywhere as much as you do. Phones are designed to grab your attention, to make you dependent on them, in my opinion addictive. They also steal your time from many interactions you could be having. Do phones create long term unhappiness?

Finally it is valuable to consider the anxiety inducing problems. These seem to me to be about a lack of doing and a lot of overthinking and overplanning. We all know the concept or definition of happiness but how many people are doing what makes them happy, its certainly not sitting with anxious thoughts.

So there may well be a huge value in doing as opposed to thinking when it comes to changing anxious thought patterns with Newcastle Hypnotherapy where change is likely to be effortful, paced and not without fun.

Newcastle Hypnotherapy Anxiety

The word ‘anxiety’ could be defined metaphorically as in ‘anxiety’ is like an upturned ant hill or going round in circles but this doesn’t provide specifics of either the problem or the attempted solution of outcome.

Let’s take a look at some of the common specific behaviours that can be anxiety producing. And its worth remembering that anxiety is an ongoing attempt to accomplish or achieve something yet presently not succeeding. You could almost think of anxiety as an ongoing process attempting to obtain control.

Newcastle Hypnotherapy Anxiety : Common Themes

Anxious people have some main traits in common. Not everyone will have all of these ‘behaviours’ so read on to see how this can apply to you. Here is a list which will be expanded with examples.

  • Attempting to solve a problem or attain a goal.
  • Confusion between ‘reality’ and ‘imagined reality’.
  • Problem fixation.
  • Generalised symptom identification.
  • Perceived lack of control.

Attempting to solve a problem

One ‘anxiety’ causing behaviour is the thought ‘what if…‘ and the ‘what if …‘ is usually having negative or problematic consequences. That ‘what if … ‘ is an attempt to gain control or solve a problem. The problem with this approach is often two fold. Firstly ‘What if I fail my driving test?‘ There will naturally be a host of negative consequences, this usually makes you feel bad and feeling bad tends to make you under perform and have more negative thoughts; a vicious cycle.

Secondly, it’s way too easy to forget to ask ‘What if I pass my driving test?” which is likely to have good feelings associated with this idea and good feelings produce in general good thoughts.

However you phrase your ‘what if’s …’ in the positive ( pass ) or in the negative ( fail ) you are attempting to attain a goal. Problems are neither good or bad they are neutral. Not attaining or attaining a goal is where the emotional juice is. Newcastle hypnotherapy anxiety can help you in changing your thought patterns to work for your success.

Confusion between ‘reality’ and ‘imagined reality’

Have you ever notices when someone seems pretty preoccupied? When such a person is really in their own head and seemingly impervious to the outside world. They may well be thinking. Anxiety behaviour often involves a partial or complete withdrawal from the outside world.

When I was very much younger I watched a horror video ( no dvd’s then ) at a friends late one night. It was A Nightmare on Elm Street. Walking home I was terrified, seeing Freddy in the shadows as I returned home. This was me confusing reality and my imagined reality. Anxiety producing for sure.

This is common in anxiety producing behaviours. Imagining the worst or some real bad events in your imagination and being somewhere in between experiencing ‘reality’ as in what is happening now with the imagined bad events.

What you imagine has physical effects in your body and feeling these effects surely effects your thoughts. Vicious cycle again. Newcastle hypnotherapy Anxiety can help you to be clear and make distinctions between immediate experience and your imagined experiences.

Problem fixation

There is a huge body of psychological and social research that shows we as human beings have a much stronger reaction to ‘Bad Events’ than to good ones. Our approximate difference is 2:1 in favour of emotional response to bad events.

This also is strongly linked to our status quo, that is what we have now. Losing something is worse that gaining something of equal value. We don’t like ( psychologically ) to lose.

If you describe yourself as anxious then by all account you have a great imagination so congratulations! Now as you have a great imagination, can you imagine if you used your great imagination to imagine solutions and attaining more of your goals?

One of two things ( possibly three ) happened when your read that last invitation to use your imagination to imagine solutions.

  1. You did imagine solutions and you are smiling.
  2. You did then thought yourself back into problem mode.

Your brain is neuroplastic, don’t worry mine is too. This is both a blessing and a curse. The blessing is one you have learned to do some task, cook a meal, drive a car, the information is stored there mostly permanently. The curse is it can be challenging to to learn to do said task, cook a meal a different way.

What we have learned and learned well become our habits, just about automated ways of thinking and behaving. No one is born anxious, its a learned way of thinking and interacting with the outside world. Newcastle hypnotherapy anxiety can help you change long term habits and if you really realise it takes good imagination to be anxious then you, with practice can use that great imagination to start imagining you can attain solutions to your goals and outcomes.

Generalised symptom identification

This probably seems like a bit of a mouth full and also I hope no where near enough of a title to make any real sense to you. If this is the case this is an example of over-generalisation. The word anxiety is a generalisation. There is no explicit information such as where, when, who etc.

A statement such as ‘I am anxtious about the test.’ has a huge amount of associated data and information missing. What test? When is the test? Have you revised for the test? What are you doing to ensure you do the best you can? Newcastle hypnotherapy anxiety helps you identify more specifics so you can be creating your own outcomes to the best of your ability.

As you engage more of your conscious efforts ( your left hemisphere ) you are engaging the very neurological processes that can calm anxiety well.

By fixating on anxious thoughts ( which drive anxious feelings ) you are to intent and purpose identifying with anxiety. ‘I am anxious!’ Fixating on some thought, some idea, some feeling is identification. A powerful Budhist teaching exercise is stating ‘I have thoughts and I am not my thoughts.’ ‘I have feelings and I am not my feelings.’

Perceived lack of control

There are two elements at work here. First there is the desire to find a solution and perceiving you can’t create one. This is a good definition of the structure of anxiety.

The second is how and what you are doing in the real work to change your situation or how you continue to do what gives you a perceived lack of control. If you continue doing the same thing, you will likely get the same results.

Rodents can be taught to perform certain tasks to receive a food pellet. They are smart and can learn this easily. They can then be shocked ( they never signed up for that but hey ho ) electrically instead of receiving their reward of food. Rats will quickly stop the reward behaviours when they get a shock.

They can then, with a little encouragement learn to do the exact shock reward behaviour when they realise that instead of the shock they will get their food pellet. When the same structure returns a reward or punishment depending on the rats outcome, they can change learned behaviours.  They can change.

When there is a ‘structure’ to the thinking and behavior that is anxiety producing, you can find this structure and with effort interrupt the problems structure.

If you are suffering with anxiety and considering hypnotherapy Newcastle for help, it will probably help you make a good decision if you feel I understand and can be able to help you. So lets begin with what Anxiety is like.

Anxiety – The Reality

Anxiety is really about a lack of predictability and a lack of control of outcomes or events that are in the future. The feelings of unease that accompany this mind set are caused by having an excess of adrenaline circulating in your system that is caused by an activation of your stress response.

Usually there is no immediate physical danger accompanying anxious thoughts but with though alone you are kick starting and revving up your natural stress response. So obviously anxiety is stress full.

Your thoughts and thinking activate your HPA ( Hypothalamic-Pituatary-Access ) into releasing adrenalin from your kidneys and also activate your parasympathetic nervous system, so your heart speeds up and your blood pressure rises. All readying your natural fight or flight system. With anxiety there is usually no physical adversary to fight and nothing to run away from.

When you have the physical symptoms of the anxious stress response, a surplus of adrenaline surging in your body, receptors in your brain detect this and this helps to reinforce the feelings of lack of control and lack of predictability. This is a vicious cycle.

No one in their right mind is going to suggest your anxieties arn’t real because you know otherwise. The feelings associated with your thoughts and worries are real. You can feel them. You know this.  An experiment with a Lemon.

When you do something over and over again it becomes a habit or a default setting. Like tying your show laces or brushing your teeth, starting in the exact same place using the same hand. You know an automatic action – a habit.

Anxiety most commonly has two aspects. The verbal inner voice story you are telling yourself and the associated images of a possible and unwanted future. These two components our inner talk and visualisation create the physical feelings. Which means you are actually very good at self hypnosis. Hypnosis to make yourself anxious but self hypnosis non the less. So you are doing Anxiety Hypnotherapy Newcastle already!
