Weight Loss Hypnotherapy Newcastle

Many times each year there is yet another new diet, a celebrity endorsed weight program or a miracle new dieting drug that effects your appetite. These will often work for a short period of time which is probably attributed to the Hawthorne Effect.

The Hawthorne effects comes from a series of psychological experiments to do with efficient of workers in a factory. The lights were dimmed and efficiency increased. The lights were made brighter and efficiency increased. Was it because the staff were being observed or the subject of a study? Who knows, it didn’t last. The changes were temporary.

Newcastle Hypnotherapy Weight Loss

Back to weight loss. Just about any new fad diet, if you’ve bought into it, you are going to be highly motivated to stick to it and initially it’s highly likely you will see and feel some difference. Then its likely that a couple of things are going to happen. I will get to these two in a paragraph or two.

Habits are usually very good things to have, when they serve us well. Good habits usually save time, like you don’t need to look round the kitchen cupboards every time you want to make a cup of tea whilst worrying where the kettle and cups are. You got that one nailed, you know it.

Same thing with habits that you want to change. In this instance over eating, eating the kinds of foods that will store fat or addressing any stressors in your life that are temporarily fixed by comfort eating. Perhaps you are thinking of getting married or going on a holiday.

Why You Want To Lose Weight

The majority of people who want to lose weight are not doing this for health reasons though this is a very good reason. Being overweight can contribute to all manner of problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart problems, high cholesterol you name it isn’t good. All of these indicators are signs of Metabolic Syndrome when any and all of these diseased can occur.

The main reason people seem to want to lose weight is to feel better about yourself, have more self esteem and turn you life around. You may also believe it will change how other people see you – right?

Changing habits requires effort and a steady commitment that is both realistic and enjoyable to do or at least not a chore. This requires long term commitment and patient time.

After The Initial Success

Earlier I mentioned that two things are likely to happen after the novelty diet or program wears off.

In no particular order though this is likely the first one, the weight stops coming off and you hit a plateau and your motivational effort goes walk about.

The habits or reasons ( there are many as discussed above ) creep back in such as the reasons you put excess weight on in the first place having never been dealt with or the stressors in you life increase and old habit come walking back in the door, makes itself comfortable and pops open a tub of ice cream.

The body under life’s changing load is attempting to maintain homeostasis. That means the body within some tolerance likes things the way it is. As weight comes off it is natural to stop for a while as a plateau until an new setpoint of weight minus fat can become normal.

This is where its essential to re-examine your motivations and be patient knowing you are continuing to do excellent work, making your new effortful habits become unconscious habits.

Well Informed Eating

This is a very important point that really can’t be overstated. Knowing which macro nutrients will assist in fat storage is essential. The vast majority of The Obesity Epidemic ( see Zoe Harcombe’s excellent book ) can be traced to dietary change in Western World with the advance of processed foods and lobbyist produced very poor governmental advice.

This ranges from advice to eat starchy foods ( carbohydrate sugar ), avoid saturated fats, mindless empty calories of soft drinks and all of the processed food that is available.

Well informed eating is all about eating whole foods. This has nothing to do with raw food smoothies or juicing everything with yogurt. It is ( ideally preparing ) whole foods such as meat, fish and nuts for protein. Cooking with and including natural saturated fats like butter and a little vegetables for carbohydrates.

The bread and butter of fat storage is bread and butter. The body is not going to be storing fat without the presence of sugar ( carbohydrates ). Eat some sugar the pancreas will release insulin ( the hormone of fat storage ) and any excess energy in your blood glucose will be stored away in two distinct phases.

Firstly excess glucose is converted to glycogen which is stored in the muscles and liver as an energy source which is not fat ( adipose tissue) . When there is no more room in the muscles and liver then and only then is any excess energy being stored away as fat.

When there is not enough circulating glucose in the blood then the opposite happens. Glycogen in the liver and muscles is converted to glucose – and the energy crisis is adverted. Need more energy this is when fat cells give up their  winter store and is converted into the much required homeostatic glucose balance.

So clearly in order to be burning fat there is going to have to be an excess load on your body which can range from mental tasks ( yes the brain can use huge amounts of energy ) to walking for exercise. Take your pick.

Simply put weight loss and keeping it off is about eating in ways that are not promoting a great deal of fat storage, doing some exercise all be it mild like walking – I have no desire to be doing circuit training or swimming 50 laps a day and crucially staying motivated.

Newcastle Hypnotherapy can help you get very connected and motivated in both losing weight and more importantly keeping it off and it will require effort on your behalf. There are a lot more aspects of the psychology of weight loss than mention in this article that will be shared with my clients.

How to Love the Pains of Weight Loss : Hypnotherapy Newcastle

Losing weight can be painful. It is not uncommon to experience psychological, emotional and even physical pain when losing weight.

Desire can be a powerful motivator and if you are reading this you probably have the desire to lose some weight. The ability to navigate the potential pains of weight loss could greatly help you sail to your desired new weight. But its not all plain sailing is it?

Love and Pains of Weight Loss - Newcastle Hypnotherapy

You most likely know people who are a healthy weight and look good with it too. These people often seem to eat what they want and still continue to stay a stable healthy size. Their secret is not genetics but they do have one secret in common.

I will share this secret and more importantly how to apply it later in this post. First though, understanding your own desires to be a healthier weight is of the utmost importance.

Soon it will be New Year and with it people all over the world setting resolutions or goals to make their life better and more enjoyable. Often such goals are not reached. They are started but not maintained. So you need to understand your motivations!

Understanding Your Motivations

It’s not really enough to decide to lose some weigh and off you go to join a gym or hire a dietician. All of this can help but unless you have a very clear understanding of your own values, the deep reasons for starting this journey, you might not maintain the volition to stay on course and reach your destination.

It is more common for people to want to avoid pain than seek what will make them feel better. This is simple biology; for an equal amount of pain and pleasure the pain hurts more. In more psychological terms this is called either problem or solution focused and to make changes you need to have both.

For instance are you more motivated to avoid, to move away from being overweight? Or are you more motivated to seek to be the weight you want to be? You need to know your own biases because it will make it easier for you to reach your goals.

What is the bigger picture or what will losing weight actually do for you? Weight loss is never just about weight loss. What kinds of values are you willing to make use of in order for you to reach your goals? How will this affect the other people in your life? What is the long term purpose and utility of attaining your weigh loss goal? Again you need to explore and know all of this. Why?

Why You Need to Understand Your Motivations

If you look back over the history of you life, you will see that everything you have attained of genuine value has taken some effort. Effort can be physical , psychological and emotional. Effort or lack of, creates your habits.

In order to establish a new habit like healthy eating, it will require you to quite literally change your brain. Our brains are inherently plastic and what we do regularly strengthens those parts of our brain that drive our habits.

Exploring and deeply connecting with your own true motivations will help you to change that part of your brain that runs your personal auto-biography. This is the story we tell ourselves about ourself. It will help you stay on course. Think self fulfilling prophesy.

Changing a habit is therefor effortful. When you are truly aligned with the value of your goals, the bigger picture and can see the clear benefits. Putting the effort in to attain your goals becomes easier!

The Pains of Weight Loss

OK so we both know weight loss is not always plain sailing. If you have dieted before you probably know most diets work well for a while and then they tend to go off course and stop working. Only something like one in ten people who start a diet continues in life keeping the weight off. A significant portion also end up gaining weight!

Diets fail for a number of reasons. Mainly I think a lack of sustained motivation, diminishing returns and a combinations of life stressors blow people off course and that is when the old habits resurface.

Knowing just a little about how life stressors affect you can be a great aide in maintaining new habits long enough until the become your normal habits.

There are two very important aspects to setting and maintaining new habits and these come from the work of Dr D. Kahneman and equally Dr R. Sapolsky and Professor M. Marmot.

First from Kahneman is Prospect Theory and Regression to the Mean. Secondly from Sapolsky and Marmot is how stressors affect people. You don’t need to know the names just the concepts because they will help you sail through the pains of weight loss.

  • Weight loss is immediately to the weight you are now. Not some weight from the past or future but now.
  • The psychological pains or pleasures from weight gain or weight loss will feel less emotional over time. So regular updating your goals and motivations is important. This is a key factor in the failure of diets and the formation of new habits.
  • If you gained 1kg or lost 1kg, the weight gain will be more emotionally negative than losing 1kg will give emotional pleasure.

When people are stressed around two thirds of people turn to high carbohydrate foods. This actually reduces stress and makes us happier – but only short term.

  • Events being unpredictable. The more unpredictable your life is the more stress you experience.
  • Feelings of being out of control. The more out of control your life feels the more stress.
  • If there is a sense that life events are getting worse you will feel more stress.
  • If you are stressed and don’t have outlets for your stress you will feel more stressed.
  • Lack of social support makes stress more stressful.

We both know that weight loss is going to be more like a wave than a calm ocean. So you will likely both lose and gain weight over the days and months to come.

If you know that some days you may gain a little, knowing that weight gain will have a negative effect. Simply knowing about this effect means you are ready to deal with better. This means weight gain is predictable and the potentially negative emotional effect can be controlled.

Working with me you will be keeping a daily record of your weight. This is really useful because you can chart your progress and notice the patterns of habit formation in relation to your emotional states.

When you are in love pain doesn’t hurt” – Joseph Campbell

Aligning your values and purpose and loving those emotions like the wind in your sails to reach your goal could help you make all the difference. To stay on course avoiding the stressors your going to need to navigate and keep going sailing towards the kind of future you want.

So What is that One Secret?

These people have habits that are aligned with their emotional outcomes and have been strengthened over time to become their usual behavior. They learned to be that way. And habits are learnable with effort and the correct motivations.

You could become a new you by changing your habits.

Hypnotherapy for Weight Loss in Newcastle

Understanding and fully using your motivations coupled with effort is a great way to make the habits of healthy eating a permanent vacation. It will take real effort on your part and most things you have attained in life of real value have required effort.

Aligning your emotional values with your goal is incredibly important. Understanding how and why stress will affect you during new habit formation helps you stay on course.

What I can help you with is maintaining the positive psychology to help you change old habits for new. This will also involve regular follow up conversations following any hypnotherapy sessions we have.

When you are ready to set a new course in your life. When you are serious about losing weight through the establishment of new habits please give me a call to find out how I can help you.

Could Dieting and Weight Loss Cure Type 2 Diabetes? Newcastle Hypnotherapy

In a recent article in the Telegraph, research from Newcastle University is suggestive that Type 2 diabetes could be cured by weight loss in the body mass which includes weight loss in the pancreas itself. This is a fascinating prospect because there are huge numbers of people in the UK that have Type 2 diabetes which is caused by several factors ( collectively know as metabolic syndrome ) and one large contributor is being over weight.

There are more than a few potential problems that can be caused by being overweight. One of these is Type 2 diabetes. This is essentially where the pancreas has stopped or severely lowered insulin production due to fat cells being full to the brim and unable to accept any more fat to be stored.

Hypnotherapy Newcastle Weight Loss

Initially the pancreas increases the amount of insulin ( insulin is the hormone that promotes fat storage ) but the insulin receptors, weary of being canvased way too much, stop receiving calls.

When we eat carbohydrate ( sugars ) a normal functioning pancreas will start to drip out our hormone insulin into the blood stream. Now in the presence of fat and carbohydrate ( think of a delicious slice of gooey chocolate cake ) there is the potential, due to insulin, to store fat should there be any excess of energy.

This is all well and good and it makes sense to store away any excess energy ( as fat ) should be fall on hard times of energy shortage in the future. The problems begin when there is no more capacity to store fat.

Some Possible Reasons For Being Overweight

The most obvious two are eating to much of the foods that store fat and in additions not doing enough exercise to maintain a healthy weight. These are the cursory reasons though. Lets explore what may be behind this.

A simple and totally reflective way of thinking about this is that its our old habits and coping mechanisms. Its the ways ( through no fault of our own ) have learned to deal with the natural stresses in our life. This is another way to describe how we individually deal with psychological stress.

Hypnotherapy is one way to re-learn and create new alternative, more of that later. Remember old habits are just learned ways of coping and reactive to the problems and situations we all face.

Psychological stressors can make our bodies ( and minds ) feel like we are responding to an actual physical stressor. They are markedly different yet can have the same affects on our body-mind.

One of the body responses to stress is the activation of our HPA Axis. Let me introduce you to the HPA Axis.  Hypothalamus – Pituitary – Adrenal Axis. This is the brain-gland response which releases glucose into the blood during a crisis.

We need extra and rapid energy to give us the strength to run or even fight. This is about rapid mobilisation of energy. This takes several seconds from the onset of a stressor to release the hormone cortisol that makes more blood glucose available and that equates to more available energy.

Stop to think about this. How often do many people become stressed during the day and how long do these episodes last? Also if we are not exercising or running off any excess energy, adrenaline and nervous energy, there is a lot of floating energy in the tank and its not getting used. It has to go back into storage.

Now add this in to the equations some two thirds of people crave sugary foods after being stressed. Being stressed and / or old habits could easily be seen as mechanisms for pilling on the weight.

What Can Be Done To Lose Weight?

Having both a knowledge and understanding of how certain foods combine to store fat is important. This is now very available material and consists of knowing the three basic food groups and knowing how fat is stored. This alone will probably not set you free though it is certainly possible it can!

For a long term solution I suggest a multi-faceted approach.

1. Understand the triggers or motivations which can lead to less that healthy eating. Realising these are most likely a form of stressor you can take appropriate actions to alleviate them.

2. Delving deep into yourself, discovering the real reasons for wanting to lose weight, keep it off and make important life changes. Losing weight in my experience is never just to lose weight.

3. Exploring how hypnotherapy may be a key to you accessing your deepest and most potent resources to actually make the kinds of lasting changes needed.

5. Consider some form of exercise. Many forms of exercise actually promote positive stress where the bodies general well being, immune system and health are actively nurtured.

6. Taking active and positive responsibility to affect changes, often with the help of a professional.

How Can Hypnotherapy Help?

Hypnotherapy has the potential to help you both access your deeper resources and creativity to make your own self determined new ways of being.

When you are interested and invested in changing your life style and are willing to make an effortful commitment to make this happen, please give me a call on 0770 481 8467 or send me a direct email to arrange a free consultation.

Hypnotherapy Newcastle – Weight Loss A Realistic Route

One of the most useful metaphors in hypnosis, psychology and psychotherapy is people have unconscious and conscious minds. It’s not a scientifically accurate model because there is no mind to be found though in psychological and therapeutic straight talk we all easily get the gist of this powerful concept.

The conscious mind is everything we are conscious aware of, including thoughts, volitional movement and in this instance the ability to resist powerful unconscious urges such as ‘eat that extra sandwich’ or ‘do the exercise later”.

Hypnotherapy Newcastle Weight Loss

You will almost certainly have heard one of your friends or perhaps even yourself saying something like “It’s like I have no control over what I ear. I know it’s not helping me lose weight but I can’t stop myself.”

Here we can explore the formation and reformation of habits or ways of behaving and how hypnotherapy can greatly assist in creating new ones and utilise the conscious unconscious mind metaphor to explore how.

LEARNING YOUR HABITS FOR GOOD OR ILL

When we learn anything genuinely new, there is considerable conscious effort involved in internalising a new skill. We all have done this in learning our native tongue, walking and mastering zips and laces. The more internalised a skill becomes ( lets call these unconscious skills ) the more of our conscious attention we can use on other tasks and the more the learned ‘skills’ become unconscious.

Unconscious skills, such as bike riding, driving cars, responding a certain way to a spider have their own real estate in our brain structures and are to some extent hard wired into our behavioural patterns. That is what makes them both challenging to change and for the good ones very useful to have mastered.

We all have habits that we have created over time. And how are habits created? Most are formed very simply through much repetition with either some perceived reward to doing the behaviour or the avoidance of punishment.

THE WEIGHT GAIN SCENARIO

Now lets explore this idea in relation to weight loss and maintenance of keeping to a certain, healthy size.

People who have tended to struggle maintaining a healthy weight, unless there is some medical or genetic condition, which is rare, are eating too much of the wrong stuff and doing too little to burn off the extra energy.

Many, many people have a hankering for sweet carbohydrates such as bread, potatoes. Carbohydrate gives us pretty immediate energy which is turned into glucose which powers our cells. Carbohydrates also not unsurprisingly can elevate a negative mood and improve concentration to task.

We have little reward centres in our brain that ‘light up’ and help us learn certain habits. The main ones in the brain are the Nucleus Accumbens Septi and the Ventrel Tegmental Area, which both are doperminergic pathways. Both of these are involved in all addiction or much more accurately the seeking behaviours which power addictions.

Our unconscious mind, unless it is educated and updated will continue to operate the seeking patterns of over eating and eating the wrong food quite happily while you can feel almost helpless to stop overeating and or eating the wrong foods.

Addressing the why you choose overeating and eating the wrong combinations of food ( the ones that promote fat storage ) is a great place to begin transforming your life. A necessary second step is discovering a deeper motivation than “I want to lose weight”. It’s is exploring genuinely how your life will be different and what are you honestly willing to do to recreate your habits.

WANT TO LOOSE WEIGHT? – IT’S RELATIVELY EASY!

Actually loosing weight is relatively easy. Begin any new ‘diet’ ( I really dislike that word ) and for a while, staying motivated you will begin to drop some pounds. Now add this to some exercise and you will be flying.

I wonder if you have done this before? It worked for a while and then you stopped your new eating regime? Maybe you got stresses and reverted to old habits and maybe stopped going to the gym?

KEEPING THE WEIGHT OFF can as any yo-yo dieter can attest to is much more challenging. Part of the solution is deeply understanding how some food combinations will be more likely to promote fat storage other like eating fatty foods without the presence of carbohydrates does not promote fat storage!

Another crucial aspect is using hypnotherapy to begin the process of changing old habits and keeping deep motivation to help you stay focused long term on the real reasons why you want to lose weight and those deeper reasons are hardly ever “I want to lose weight”!

It is likely you will require more than one session to positively transform your attitude and psychology so please avoid the one session wonder-fix hope because to make a long term transformation it will require effort from you to go beyond the yo-yo diet miracle that never happened and for you to take charge of becoming who you want to be.

When you are honestly willing to make real change, with effort and support, please do get in touch. I offer a completely free telephone consultation to discover how we can work together to help you transform your life.

PsychoSomatic Secrets of How To Lose Weight and Keep It Off with Hypnotherapy

When you read the word psychosomatic in relation to weight loss, what does that conjurer up for you? Psycho relates to the internal thoughts and emotions we all can feel. Somatic relates to your body and physical sensations. Together these will massively effect your ability to lose weight and keep it off long term.

Before You Read On – Weight Loss is Not About Weight Loss

Weight loss is not about weight loss – it’s about what happens from the results! Passing an exam or a driving test is not about passing the test its about the freedom and possibilities that arise from that result.

Pleas ask yourself why is it you want to lose weight and what purpose will losing and maintaining a healthy weight serve for you? Your reasoning will become important because I use hypnotherapy and psychotherapeutic methods here in Newcastle to help you with the psychological aspects of weight loss.

When you become aware of your own deeper motivations and the real reasons you will most likely discover something that can be incredibly empowering and lasting in your own life. You also need to know the effects of certain foods in relations to weight loss. There is a free paper at the end of this post that offers this valuable information.

Weight Gain – Your Environment and Your Psychology

When you have a problem remaining the right weight and ruling out medical conditions it is easy to say there is a problem in your psycho-somatic balance and should you agree, how would you like to know how to rebalance that system both short and long term?

If you struggle in keeping your weight at a sensible and healthy balance then I am sure you will be all too familiar with diets and exercise routines that you have tried for a while, noticed some results and then took your foot of the gas. What happened next? You lost motivation and the weight came back. Heck, I bet you even put on a little more.

Personally I have been what I regard as really ”over weight’ two times in my life. The first time was when I was working offshore in Norway and I got fat. The second time was when I got very serious about gaining weight using weights and strength training. Knowing how to gain weight can be just as useful as knowing how to take it off and keep it off.

Working offshore in Norway on all of the oil rigs there are a 24 hour kitchens that catered for all kinds of tastes. Just about any kind of food you can think of was available all the time. Just turn up any time and graze. The ever open, all you can eat buffet. Well in six months of grazing I put on an extra 3 stone from my normal weight.

As a contrast working from my base weight and engaging in daily weight training for six months I also put on three stone. The diet I was consuming were pretty different comparing the Norway buffet and the foods I was eating to support my muscles growing.

There seem to me two crucially important aspects in weight management. The first and most obvious we realise is exercise because this is how to create a body deficient in energy and this is what will utilise the bodies energy stores reducing adipose tissue – fat.

The second is to me much more important. This is the psychological components ( Psycho in Psychosomatic ) comprising ‘environmental-pressures’ and the mental focus to have and maintain long term ambitions in terms of your weight. This is the purpose and motivation that will most likely lead to higher self esteem and self worth and the why I invited you to think about at the beginning of this post.

When I worked offshore there was bad-for-me combinations of a very stressful job, odd sleeping and working times and a 24 hour buffet serving all sorts of delicious sugary carbohydrates that for many people are actually stress relievers.

I got overweight, though only about one and a half stone while I was writing software. There was a ‘cult’ of all of us bringing in biscuits, sweets and cake which we all grazed on throughout the day.

Sure we were thinking hard and that actually does use up energy. Yet reflecting now most members of that software programming team was overweight. And some much more than others. Perhaps it was another way of dealing with in-job stress or coping with monotony or maybe it was a bi-product of a grazing culture. Perhaps it was all of those things and more.

The point I want to stress is two fold. You can have responses in your environments and these can be powerfully mediated by your own long term and powerful reasons, purpose and values for maintaining a specific and healthy weight over time. This is what I can help you with.

Possible Reasons Why You Are Overweight

There are lots of ‘reasons’ why you are overweight. A combination of these will of course be worse for you and may over time adversely affect your health.

  • Eating excess processed foods ( especially sugar )
  • Taking in more energy than you burn off
  • Stress Full life and comfort eating
  • Eating when you are not hungry
  • Lack of low to moderate intensity exercise
  • Poor knowledge of food and storing fat
  • Your responses to your environments

Most of these can be mediated and managed with the right psychology. This really does mean having a deep knowing why its important for you to lose and maintain a healthy weight and being able to tap into your deep motivations.

Thank you for reading this far. I am making an assumption that you are serious about becoming a certain healthy weight. As such I want to offer you a free paper on food that is accented on giving you powerful knowledge that can be used to lose weight, keep it off and potentially dramatically change how and what you eat.

I am not a dietician so this free paper is informational only. This is exactly the knowledge I used to gain weight and also the knowledge you can use to maintain a healthy weight. Add the correct psychological attitude for you and you seriously increase your ability to get what you want.

Call now to request your free paper : UnSecrets of Weight Loss – Newcastle Hypnotherapy from Nigel Hetherington. Call 0770 481 8467. If you would like a free telephone consultation you can arrange one at this time too.

What I really can help you with is for you to gain and strengthen the psychological attitude that can help you maintain a healthy weight long term where you feel good about yourself over time. This will have everything to do with that question – why do you want to lose weight?

Working together initially involves a telephone conversation so I can be sure you are interested and committed to long term solutions and not the ‘quick fix’ short term solution.

I don’t believe things like hypnotic gastric banding or bariatric surgery are long term solutions for the vast majority of people who struggle with their weight, their moods and how they cope with stress. At the most basic level you are restricting your food input and this is almost certain to make you hungry and even obsess about food.

I don’t believe fad diets work for most people because if they did there wouldn’t be a massive global market in diet books, self help and semi-legal drugs to expel fat from our bodies. It is simply not enough to hope for a quick effortless fix.

It will most likely take effort on your behalf and if you think about it really honestly now, what have you achieved of genuine worth and value where you have not had to exert some effort? What really needs to change is both at a behavioural and psychological level.

Booking An Appointment

After an initial telephone consultation we will arrange an appointment and after this you will contact me by way of follow up at regular intervals over the next 12 months. Additional appointments are only as required.

Thank you for reading and remember to call even if at the moment you only require the free paper UnSecrets of Weight Loss.

Weight Loss Truths That Will Shock You – Especially Hypnotherapy To Shrink Your Stomach!

There are several hard and potentially disturbing truths that anyone that is seriously interested in weight loss and maintaining the weight off – which are two very different things – must know and understand.

This post will be relevant to all individual people who want and need to lose weigh as well as those of you who are considering using any psychological method such as hypnotherapy to help you lose weight and keep it off.

So here is the first idea we need to explore. Weigh Loss has very little to do with the old idea that reducing the volume of food you consume will help you lose weight. This may be shocking for the bands of hypnotic gastric banding providers who are in essence telling you to control the volume you eat by imagining your stomach is smaller.

Hypnotherapy Weight Loss

This is the idea, and it sounds like it could be good, is cut down on the amount of food you eat and do more to burn off the excess. But there is abundant research evidence that proves there is no direct relationship between calorie deficit ( eating less calories ) and weigh loss.

But There Is No Direct Link To Weigh Loss And Reducing Food Volume

Its just a small matter but some foods have the potential to make you store fats and put on weight and others do not. So it should be worryingly obvious that gastric banding alone, and I mean the surgical operation, or even reducing the amount you eat can not and will not make you lose weight over any period of time.

In the UK a recent government study shows that 1 in 4 adults are obese and the percentage of male adults that are obese and overweight is 65% and the percentage of female adults that are obese and overweight is 58%. This shocks me and I believe I understand why people are becoming so fat.

In a study by Colleen Rand in relation to being obese ( something which 1 in 4 UK people are ) instead of being obese:

  • 100% would rather be deaf.
  • 89% would rather be blind.
  • 91% would rather have a leg amputated.

The surgical procedure bariatric surgery or as we know it gastric banding is a very extreme form, a last resort if you like, to attempt to control weight gain. It costs between £5000 and £8000 and is used to treat ( possibly the wrong word ) life threatening obesity by restricting the size of the stomach.

There is no direct relationships between the amount of food that you put in your body to the amount of weight you carry. In abundant research there is no direct relationship between calorie deficit ( eating less calories ) and weigh loss.

How Our Bodies Store Fat

There are three food groups and there is only one of them that creates the conditions where it is possible to store fat in a fat cell as a triglyceride.

Lets explore our fat enabling friend the carbohydrate. When you eat carbohydrates, these are essentially sugars, which are broken down to provide energy in the form of glucose. If you don’t use that available glucose it will be stored away as glycogen. That is excess glucose will be stored away as four parts water and one part glycogen.

When we eat carbohydrates our friend the hormone of plenty, insulin, does its part to return the blood glucose level to the more usual state. So insulin converts glucose into glycogen to be stored in the muscles and liver as an on tap energy source.

There are two types of human body fat. One is know as fatty acids which are small chain molecules that are burned up for energy. The other form is known as triglycerides. A triglyceride is three fatty acids bound up with glycerol. A triglyceride within a fat cell will need to be broken down into the simpler fatty acid to pass the fat cell membrane and be used as a fuel.

The more glucose available to fat cells the more glycerol can be made. If there is more glycerol available there is more fat that can be stored in the fat cells as triglycerides. And where is an amazingly abundant source of glucose? You got it carbohydrates.

Fat storage can only occur when there are carbohydrates and glucose present in the body. It is that simple.

How Our Bodies Utilise Fat

How fat is stored is different to how our bodies will utilise stored fat. Working in position to insulin released from the pancreas is another pancreatic hormone glucagon. This little helper converts stored glycogen in the liver into glucose.

In response to falling blood sugar the pancreas produces glucagon and in turn the fatty acids stored in the liver are utilised to provide fuel for the body. If there is no glucose and carbohydrates available then and only then will the stored triglycerides begin to be broken down and use as energy.

When the triglycerides are being broken down with an enzyme lipase the fatty acids are released and the glycerol can be converted into glucose for use in the brain.

So I hope you have a very clear understanding that restricting the amounts you can eat has nothing to do with what you eat and that when you are eating any form of carbohydrates and glucose you are creating the conditions for fat storage. The evil little fat hoarder is carbohydrates.

Psychological And Knowledge Aspects To Long Term Weight Loss

This is where I can help you. What is absolutely critical in maintaining a lighter and healthier weight is a two fold approach.

The first aspect is you are armed and equipped with the right information that will help you. The latest NHS advice gives old and outdated advice and information. It may work but then again all of the information about foods, weight and weigh loss is not there or is outdated or just plain wrong. Hypnotherapy For Weight Loss : Psychological Relationship with Food

Newcastle Hypnotherapy for help with loosing weight and maintaining a healthy attitude towards yourself and your relationship with food. To find out how hypnotherapy can help with the psychological relationship with food, read on.

Hypnotherapy can be used to help you deal with emotional, psychological and environmental aspects of eating. This could mean using food or snacks to deal with stress and negative emotional issues. Or learning to stop ‘snacking’ on junk food treats.

Professional Hypnotherapy Weight Loss

Weight loss, and healthy long term maintenance is not about fad diets, not just about how much you eat vs how much you burn off, its not just about your psychology. So not surprisingly it is all of these aspects and more.

The foods we eat are divided into three groups. Fats, Protein and Carbohydrates. Some of these are used to build and maintain our body while others ( fatty acids and sugars ) provide the fuel.

Surplus energy from fats, carbohydrates and sugars is stored in the body. Fatty acids and glycerol form triglycerides, stored in your fat cells and glucose forms glucogen which is stored in the muscles and liver.

Clearly, having a good and balanced diet is important. Continue to eat too much and store too much fat means you will become fat. A dietician and nutritionist can provide with all the above informations and even work our a new regime or suggest a new diet.

When latest diets, joining a new gym or a whole new eating regime doesn’t work for you for the umpteenth time it is a good idea to explore the psychological aspects of your relationship with food.

Psychological Relationship with Food

Hypnotherapy as any psychotherapeutic practice can, can help you change your perceived motivations, ideas and thoughts about food, eating and weight. This is not just a psychological issue because thoughts create and feed emotions as emotions can create thoughts.

More than two thirds of people eat more when they are stressed or emotionally challenged. This could be a craving for high carbohydrate foods or simply a grazing behaviour to help cope. This means stress and emotional states alter apatite.

High carbohydrate, fatty and sugary foods taste good to most people. When these becomes used as a pick me up for low moods, stress alleviation or even to relieve boredom they can become coping habits.

At a simplistic and at the same time very honest level, overeater’s are using food as a coping mechanism, a coping behaviour.

When a habit or coping behaviour is acted out, there is, a reward actually felt for doing that behaviour. Long term these kinds of behaviours can produce guilt, shame and create the negative spiral of yo yo quitting. Why because they never address the real issue. Yet coping behaviours for a short while do the trick.

There are two very effective aspects you can address to change your psychological relationship with food and how you eat.To make honest and lasting change you need to be honest with yourself.

  • First, get very clear about why you want to lose weight.  This is usually nothing to do with health, looks or even weight loss!
  • The second is acknowledging and addressing the underlying causes for eating the ways you have.

Hypnotherapy Newcastle Weight Loss

Newcastle hypnotherapy for help and assistance in weight loss and more importantly keeping the weight off.  The UK is fastest becoming one of the fattest peoples in the world, this is not a good thing at all. Why is this?

Because being overweight is just one contributing factor to what the World Health Organisation describe and predict is going to be the leading health issue, leading to premature death and potentially nasty complication on the way – Metabolic Syndrome or Syndrome X. You could look and feel better slimmer.

Hypnotherapy Newcastle

Most if not all of us eat junk from time to time. We eat at restaurants or have regular habits of eating quick, fast foods. But did you know that you make your habits real. Do you know what eating just one, just one, bag of crisps every day for a year adds up to?

Over one year if you eat just one little bag of crisps each day you are consuming about FIVE litres of fat per year. Little adds up over a long time.  Change a little habit and, over time, the results add up to a slimmer you.

Hypnotherapy Newcastle can assist you in changing your attitude to emotional eating and discovering how you can change your your attitude to using food in relationship to becoming the weight and shape you want to be, Please read on …

Nuts and Bolts What is Overweight Anyway? Overweight, poor diet and lack of exercise together are a leading cause of heart disease. As we, as a species, in the Western world, are tending to live longer, the natural termination of life is more like a gradual falling apart. By taking care of your body in healthy ways it may well be possible to live longer and live longer healthier.

Have a diet of ready meals, live a stressful life, do little exercise and chances may be you are asking for trouble.  Weight loss hypnotherapy is honestly not the quick effortless fix some people expect. The same way some people control their diabetes with drugs and continue eating with porcine abandon.

Hypnotherapy Newcastle for weight loss and more importantly staying healthy is more interested in helping you change your attitude to both eating and your body with long term health as a main agenda. The focus is changing your attitude to respect yourself better. Overeating is a learned habit, usually over many years and is about changing habits based in future focused positive change.

When we eat at regular meal times, snack times we are teaching our body to have some very specific biological responses related to food consumption and fat storage. Say you eat every day at 6pm. At about quarter to six, based on histological habits, your body will produce insulin. Insulin is the hormone that is responsible for fat storage. You happy pancreas at this time, before meals will secrete a hormone that is telling you body to get ready to store fat.

Fat is stored in fat cells, in muscles and in the liver. Over eat, put too much in the proverbial biological fuel tank and you store fat. Eat too much and the body does excess storage which is easily seen in being over weight and, well fat. As we move about, think and do activities through our daily life we require energy.

Our bodies convert fat into energy. The trick is really about getting a balance in what we intake and what we use. Too much in and too little activity usually equals being overweight.

Your Heart Is Like A Pump

When you have excess fat circulating in your body your blood is in essence thicker. Blood can thicken during stressful responses, after meals or because there is too much bad cholesterol in your system.  Claggy, thicker blood puts more stress on the pump, your heart, increasing systolic and diastolic pressure, possibility causing damage to your blood vessels and atherosclerosis.

Cholesterol : The Good, The Bad and Nothing To Do With Looks

There are two types of cholesterol the so called good and bad types. High density lipoprotein associated cholesterol ( HDL ) and low density lipoprotein associated cholesterol ( LDL ) respectively. Atherosclerosis plaque is caused mainly with LDL where the HDL cholesterol is the type that has been removed from plaques and is going to your liver. Too little HDL and lots of LDL is bad news. Stress increases LDL so learn to relax more because it could make you live longer!

Why People Eat To Excess

Couple of reasons. One food tastes really good! We love sugar and fudge and cake and all that high energy stuff. The other reason is habit. Habit can be in the form of little nibbles to alleviate stress, give us a little hit of energy or even boredom! Habits work like this in neurological terms.

We have the desire to eat, perhaps a crisp or a biscuit, and we have a little surge of dopamine. Dopamine is the motivating neurotransmitter. Then we do a behaviour, in this case eating, and we have the sense of reward. It all makes perfect sense because it tastes good or stops us being board or gives us that little boost of energy we ‘want’.

What is not being addressed right at the time ( or actually just before ) of eating extras is the bigger picture. The bigger picture is you want or need to lose weight. Well that is only a bit of the bigger picture in reality. Sure people want to lose weight but that is not the real outcome at all. The real outcome is what losing weight will get you, will do for you and what this is leading too. It is not about losing weight!

Metabolic Syndrome

Syndrome X (read about and scare yourself here ) is a potentially disastrous meeting of things that can ‘go wrong’ in a human body. A collection of way too much sugary and fatty foods contributing to thick circulating blood. A lack of exercise that leads to the sedentary life style; building up more and more fatty deposits. Excess psychological stress, releasing stress hormones in a not good way. All putting an abnormal load on the old ticker and potentially leading to diabetes, hight blood pressure, heat disease and checking out way too early.

Weight Loss Hypnotherapy Newcastle

Hypnotherapy weight loss Newcastle. Summer is reputed to be coming and you want to look good and keep the weigh loss in the right balance so is using hypnotherapy Newcastle weigh loss is for you?

Its a pretty simple formula for most to gain weight. This is take in more energy than you use and it gets stored away in fat cells. Eat bits and bobs of junk food, a biscuit more often than not and do little or no exercise and you have the perfect formula to put on weigh and that can get you down right?

Hypnotherapy Newcastle Weight Loss

Many people choose to use hypnosis for weigh loss because they understand the psychological factors in changing old habits or they have yo-yo dieted for so long they require new momentum to break free of old mannerisms that are potentially going to cause problems.

The World Health Organisation predicts that Cardiovascular  ( Metabolic Syndrome isomorphism ) will become the biggest risk to health and biggest percentage killer of high, medium and low income people between 2015 and 2030.

Metabolic Syndrome is a collection of things that can go wrong in the human body where each is not life threatening but having a few of these symptoms is becoming a strong predictor for ill health and cardiovascular problems.

Metabolic Syndrome predictors are as follows:

  • Having ‘apple’ rather than ‘pear’ shaped fat on the body.
  • High amounts of LDL cholesterol and low amounts of HDL cholesterol.
  • High blood sugar; a predictor of diabetes.
  • High concentrations of triglycerides in the blood.
  • High blood pressure.

Why Do People Eat More Than Required?

People eat to excess for many reasons. A very common reason is carbohydrate rich food actually make you feel good, albeit for a short time. In times of stress, even mild, two thirds of people use food to make themselves feel better!

It can become like an addiction. The drive, a dopamine function, for food, for comfort eating or because sugar tastes good can actually drive people, even people wanting to or needing to lose weigh to eat.

Following on from this there is an endogenous reward released and physiologically it can actually feel good to eat. It can be a tricky situation to get the balance right and this is where hypnosis Newcastle can help you get and maintain the right balance for you.

Eating Food – You Are What You Eat

There are essentially three food forms. These are Carbohydrates like bread, pasta and potato. There are Fats such as in dairy, oil and chocolate and there are Proteins as in chicken, eggs and cheese. We require all of these food types to be healthy and function well.

When we eat protein it is broken down into amino acids in the blood stream. Starch, sugars and carbohydrates are turned into glucose in the blood stream and are stored as glycogen. Fat is turned into fatty acids, glycerol and is stored as triglyceriods in fat cells, the liver and muscles.

Psychological and Physiological Balance

No matter how your days are it is really very easy, cheap and little effort to eat healthily. It is all to easy to eat ‘rubbish’ which is mass produced and as we all know in quantity is not the best health option.

Hypnotherapy Newcastle can help you tap into the real motivation and purpose that is a part of you wanting to lose weigh, stop yo-yo dieting and live a much more healthy and content life. You may also really want consider the benefits of exercise as part of your life style.

The Truth About Weight Loss

No one actually wants to lose weight just for the sake of losing weight. Think about it!

It is what you will get from losing weight that is the real importance and value to you. Perhaps it is to feel healthier or live longer. Perhaps losing weight will mean you have more self esteem or self worth. It could be for any number of very important reasons but it is NOT just about losing weight.

Newcastle Hypnotherapy Weight Loss – Nigel Hetherington

Hypnotherapy for weight loss in Newcastle and the North East because so very many people want the body beautiful and their idealised body shape. There are essentially two reasons people want to lose weigh. Obviously there are the physical aspects but there are also the psychological ones.

Hypnotherapy in Newcastle for weight loss is honestly not just about losing weight. There is a required focus on what losing weight will actually accomplish and mean for any client. What are the deeper values you will need to access when your size or shape changes because your psyche has changed in a way that supports a different set of psychologically driven eating behaviours?

Hypnotherapy Newcastle Weight Loss

Psychological Hunger – A Deeper Metaphor

There are two areas in the brain that are responsible for the biological trigger of eating and stopping eating. In the limbic system the hypothalamus, a cluster of dense functional neurons about the size of a grape mediate our physical appetites.  The ventromedial and lateral nuclei respectively monitor rising and falling glucose in the body and as so create the feeling of satiation and hunger.

Because the brain has evolved to utilise the same circuitry for both physical and abstract navigation in the world of body requirements and social and cultural requirements there is almost certainly a hunger for the psychological needs as well as the biological ones. Eating to excess or hungering for something other than food will be very easily confused neurologically.

If we eat food that is rancid we feel disgust and that same brain region, the insular cortex,  is also where we ‘feel’ moral disgust.  We feel the need for food but we can also feel other needs that are psychological. In order to satisfy a psychological need it is no surprise that we eat to alleviate the feelings of wanting something to satisfy the soul.

Why People Eat To Excess

It could be argued that eating is one way to combat negative feelings, that means when you are upset or ‘depressed’ it is likely ( 66% ) people become hyperphagic that is eat more carbohydrates to feel better and only one third of people when depressed become hypophagic eat less. Feed a cold and starve a fever.

This in the very general sense has everything to do with temporary moods or equally long term feelings of deprivation which causes mood to swing. Swing left, right and off centre. Eating something with carbs or sugar really does taste very good and albeit temporarily, is a stress reliever. The problems begin when eating becomes a comforter for stress and negative emotions. This is a really short term solution and not the most healthy by a long way.

In the US recent statistics suggest that over one third of people are obese. That is not just a bit overweight this is FAT! Being obese has massively strong correlations to health problems. Food is so very easily available and almost effortless to obtain. Think about all of the packaged ready meals or the ubiquitous all-you- can- eat buffets that attract so many people to sit a graze like happy cows chomping and gobbling up food.

Yo-Yo Dieting And Failure

Is this you? Begin a very well intentioned diet plan, stick to it for a day, a week or a month and then lose steam? Buy the latest dieting book, maybe even read it, and still hating being fat? Start stop, start stop … Yo-Yo! Self help books, self help audio and self help video all sell two things … hope and a miracle cure.

The self help library of products is a multi-million industry and unless you do actually do the exercises and practices as described is just filling the pockets of people other than you in terms of getting what you really want.

What you need to do is create long term and self powered, self motivated ways of creating the you you want to be and living the life you want to live. The crux for me is connecting and sponsoring a very real and honestly motivating psyche or mental state that powers your new behaviours and habits. In effect a new you that has access to the deepest reasons and motivation that drive forward the behaviours that make you take care of and nurture who you are.

What is often missing in all the failed attempts is a conscious understanding of why you need to lose weight and a really very long term commitment to investing in your health, happiness and personal evolution.

A Way Forward – Weight Loss Psychology

Before you seek any psychological, hypnotherapy or counselling ask yourself the following questions and you will already have one foot in the door to a lasting change.

  • What does losing weight actually mean?
  • What is important about losing weight?
  • What are the real important factors here?
  • What is driving me to lose weight?
  • What will be different when I have lost weight?
  • Where is this leading you towards?

When you have answers and this will equate to a honest and long term motivation, the kind that can prevent the Yo-Yo dieting trap and start you on a way forwards in life that is, as you think about this now, is not really to do with weight loss but instead becoming more of who you want to be …

Weight Loss Hypnotherapy Newcastle – Nigel Hetherington

Have you ever wished that you got into something right at the very start? OK, that didn’t happen … BUT …

Is Hypnotic Gastric Banding the ship that has already sailed in hypnotherapy? If so, here is the little ferry boat to take you on board.

Hypnotic Gastric Band Newcastle - Nigel Hetherington

My co-trainer Ian Walshaw, an extremely experienced Gastric Band Hypnotherapist, believes there is going to be a massive wave of new interest in Gastric Band Hypnotherapy in the 2013 new year. Because in order to take advantage of this renewed interest you have to be ready to take that advantage and this is your opportunity. Now.

If you are not already offering Hypnotic Gastric Banding ( HGB ) to your clients, friends and family, but you know other change professionals and hypnotherapists surrounding you who have lots of weight loss clients perhaps you are wishing that you could be offering an even better service, then now is your opportunity to do more than that. before this tide of change and this ship sets sail again. Come aboard.

Every day in the news there is some story re the dangers of obesity, gastric band surgery is incredibly difficult to obtain on the NHS. Plastic surgery companies in the UK charge approximately £6000 for gastric banding operations and people pay for this this hand over fist to lose weight more easily.

In fact, the weight loss industry in the UK is worth billions of pounds because in the words of one of Ian Walshaw’s colleagues that he taught the HGB process “I have never met people so prepared to pay anything to resolve their problem“.

Ian Walshaw & me, Nigel Hetherington, are both vastly experienced in the real world of successful hypnotherapy techniques, and we have teamed up to offer this unique training and learning experience.

Your HGB training will take place over two days and offer hands on practical training that is specifically designed to give you a full experiential education in HGB and to answer all your questions about how to and what if’s so ensuring that the first time you take someone through HGB process you will be as powerful and effective as you can possibly be.

In order now to do this, you will be guided through a four session format that creates the HGB sequence. If you have your own issues regarding weight loss you can use this as your own unique opportunity to take advantage of the HGB process for yourself. Not only will you complete the process just like a client, each step of the process will be addressed in to specific details so that you know and understand each section implicitly.

You will you learn the formation of each section step and you will be shown the resources and implements that you will require to create your own audio tracks to give to your clients including where to source the sound effects and theatrical aspects to the HGB operation session so you can inject such a level of reality into the process that the unconscious mind simply cannot tell the difference between this process and real gastric banding surgical operation.

Nigel Hetherington is going to specifically deliver modules on the neurology of weight loss so that you can predict and negate you clients resistance before it arises.

We believe that this is going to be the most comprehensive HGB training available in the UK. At £80.00 it represents fantastic value, you will not be tied into any groups or organisations like your competitors may be but you will be able to take advantage of their advertising.

This training is suitable for anyone with experience in using the practical aspects of hypnotherapy from beginner to advanced. So do you know that in January 2013, Paul McKenna is releasing his new book on Hypnotic Gastric Banding. Paul Mckenna is a worldwide phenomena in the field of hypnosis and he comes with a multi million pound advertising and marketing team.

It is our view that come January HGB is going to be in every newspaper, on morning TV and in the bookshops. People who for years have felt powerless in relation to their weight loss are going to once again have the process brought into their awareness and they are going to be seeking help from people just like you.

Hypnotherapy Newcastle for Weigh Loss – Nigel Hetherington

Stress, comfort eating, comfort drinking add up over time to overweight, unhappy and potentially unhealthy people. Hypnotherapy Newcastle offers alternative ways to help you change habits of overeating and excess alcohol and manage the stress in your life. Newcastle hypnotherapy for weigh loss can help you create better ways to cope with stress and lose weight. Hypnotherapy is not a magic fix this requires a real and genuine commitment to make changes.

Comfort Eating Is Weight Addition

We have all heard the term comfort eating but what does it actually mean. Well for once the term is quite self explanatory. Eating brings comfort, so we can safely assume that life is uncomfortable or stressful to the extent that people eat sugary, biscuity, chrispy food substitutes to make themselves feel better. The interesting thing is that this actually works to produce a rather short term feeling of comfort.

Research shows that two thirds of people who are seriously stressed turn to food, eating more than average ( hyperphagic ) to bring some comfort into their lives. The other one third eat less that average ( hypophagic ).

The vast majority of overweight people are overweight because of what they eat and their physical activity or lack of it. A small percentage of people are overweight due to biological / genetic predisposition but this is a very small percentage. The former can then be said to be overweight due to the situations and behaviours that drive overeating and excess sugary drinks. These are explored below.

Now, imagine you are one of these over eaters, eating more than the calories you require each day as a way to cope with stress. Your body will cleverly be storing these extra energy reserves for your future in fat cells, saving them for a rainy day or some hyper stress response or even some heavy exercise. Keep on depositing excess calories in your account of energy reserves and you will keep growing and growing while you keep getting fatter and fatter.

Now imagine that you are using alcohol or some sugary drink in excess. Even more calories, even more deposits into the growing energy bank. Drink too much to ease the stresses of life and you are potentially damaging your memory and ability to learn new things. One bottle of wine each night is equivalent in terms of calories to 12 fried fish fingers, yummy. That can be close to 700 calories from booze alone.

Alcohol also slows your metabolism down so you are using up less calories while you are putting more into the calorie bank by consuming excess. That is putting more in than you are using. For example lets say one glass or red wine is 230 calories playing basket ball for around 45 minutes would use this up.

Of course the above three paragraphs tend to paint a rather grim picture of ways people get overweight by having not so good coping mechanisms of dealing with stress. Though, if this is you, some life style changes can help you lose some weight and deal with stress in a better, healthier way. Newcastle hypnotherapy can help you alter your attitude to eating and exercise and can also, even more importantly help you deal with the causes of overindulging.

Yo Yo Dieting – The ‘G’ Spot factor : An analogy

Another night in; another pizza followed by a bag of maltezers all washed down with some fizzy drink made largely from corn syrup. Short term it even feels good.  The following morning you wake up a bit tired, look in the mirror and the slim lithe and muscular figure of your early years has deserted you and looking at yourself this way, thinking about cholesterol and furring arteries you decide it is high time to take stock of your life now so you live longer and have a much better future.

With the best intention in the world you are going to enter into a new era of your life with much better eating habits and you are even considering exercising too. You are imagining getting into your old clothes without a shoe horn or better yet some new clothes that will make you look and feel great. Excellent!

You leave for work, arrive at work … The day continues …

The Guilt ( G ) Spot is where after promising yourself, your friends and even sometimes god you will never eat another cup cake covered in sprinkles you do and then you do it again. After a good bout of porcine grazing you hate yourself and you are all ready to start again.

Weigh Loss : The Parasympathetic System

A very well known hypnotherapist claims they worked with weight loss and did nothing other that do relaxation over 10 one hour sessions and their clients got excellent results. What was going on and how can you help yourself to lose weight without seeing a hypnotherapist? Just relaxation for one hour is activating your rest and digest body systems. This is called the parasympathetic system and this activates in an absence of stress.

A very good reason for why many people that are overweight is how they cope with excess stress. Remember about 2/3 of people who are stressed are hyperphagic that means they eat more calories than they require. And many of these foods eaten or even the act of eating does reduce stress temporarily.

First step is to make an unbreakable commitment to take just 30 minutes per day for a month to meditate or listen to some hypnosis relaxation. When you really want to do this but again and again you slip back into eating and drinking to excess it is time to think about seeing a professional for help.

If you are already saying I don’t have time for 30 minutes each day, think again.

Anxiety Hypnotherapy Newcastle – Nigel Hetherington

Trapped #1

Anxiety really can be a terrible and consuming thing to experience. Another word for anxiety is WORRY. Newcastle Hypnotherapy with Nigel Hetherington can be a real solution for you.

Anxiety will often reduce your capacity to respond as well as act in the ways you truly want to experience life. Another word for anxiety is worry. Worrying about how things can go wrong or how events can all turn out bad. How would it be when you can set yourself free?

Anxiety or worry is not a disease, it is not a pathology. Many so called counsellors or therapists would have you believe this. This is not true.

Anxiety its a way, a learned way of thinking about the future. Think about this, no one as far as I know was born anxious, it was a learned behaviour. This learned behaviour is all about how to cope and deal with physical / emotional feelings.

Anxiety is a behaviour, it is not a pathology and as such does not need to be suppressed with medication. This means there is no physical disease associated with anxious behaviour. There is of course neurological activity ( ways of thinking ) that are associated with anxiety. You don’t require drugs or medication to change thought patterns. At best drugs will suppress anxiety, they will likely suppress other things too.

If anxiety is really is screwing up your life, you are worrying and worrying and as a result suffering … I can most likely help you change your behaviour. I can assist you in turning your though patterns around. The purpose being to stop worrying and start living a more satisfying and meaningful life.

Cyclic negative, anxiety producing thought patterns tend to go like this.

“What if … but then what, if I don’t … and then What if … but what if …”

So the real key here is to STOP that thought pattern and engage in a better one right …

People who behave anxiously are never anxious about some general things. You are anxious about something specific and worst of all it has not happened. Anxiety is all about thinking about the future and creating, almost always, the worst possible outcome for yourself and others. Think about it, how could it be different if you started habitually thinking about better outcomes in the future?

Newcastle Hypnotherapy for Anxiety combines NLP, Hypnosis and Humour in a way that will really help you move through your old thought patterns and into a whole new way of thinking.

If you have tried counselling and it really hasn’t worked after lots of session and you are totally committed to making the changes in your life you honestly want … act now …

For a completely confidential and solution orientated approach for you to help getting yourself out of anxiety and worry and Getting on with your life, contact me right away, [ after all being anxious and a worrier what’s the worst that can happen 😉 ] call now.

Provocative Therapy and Coaching Workshop

I am hosting a workshop with my good friend Phil Jeremiah for coaches, hypnotherapists, therapists and change workers in Newcastle.

Humour can help to break old patterns and establish new ones

So many research papers and books tell us of the positive effects of laughter. Apparently 20 minutes of laughter is equivalent to 20 minutes of physical activity, likened to an inner form of jogging. It may well act as a buffer against day to day stressful perceptions. However, laughter is not easy to come by in our mixed up fear driven world. Consequently Thought Provoking Dialogue sets out to challenge our sometimes negative mind-sets and self-limiting beliefs.

Phil provides training, motivational speaking and support to organisations in the use of humour. Laughter in the workplace is proven to reduce symptoms of stress and can promote good team working in a fun way with groups or individuals. This two day workshop offers us the opportunity to experiment with, understand why and how, and develop confidence in using humour in coaching or therapy.

It’s a must for your development and an even greater must for right now – with our economic and social structures all in turmoil, we could all do with a little humour to help us frame it in ways that are useful to and for us and to and for our clients.

This weekend workshop takes place May 12-13 and is excellent value at £125 AND you are guaranteed outrageous laughter and learning as well as highly workable and client centred ways of engendering change. Book your place now!

Addiction Therapy Newcastle

15.Carl Jung

“I can resist anything but temptation” – Oscar Wilde

It is said that one of Carl Jung’s patients, a hopeless alcoholic went to Jung for treatment. After one session all was going well and the addict recoverer for some few days. After yet another relapse the addict returned to Jung and said “I have relapsed and I need you to fix me“.

Jung’s response was excellent. “I can’t help you, you are the most sever alcoholic I have ever met and I can’t help you.

Gob smacked the alcoholic asked “Then what can I do? Is all hope lost?

Here is something you can try, it may save you or it may not. I can’t help you. The only thing that might help you is …” Jung paused, for effect …

This is called an olive branch. It requires both hope and action

… Is this. Go to all the Churches and Spiritual meetings you can until you find something that is bigger than you and that you honestly can relate to. I don’t know if you will ever find this, yet you can try.

The first steps of becoming free of an addiction is often to first realise then admit the problem of addiction. If it is not a problem then it is not a problem.

If it is a problem then … It Is a Problem.

It is very curious to know that many of the so called addictions are actually a coping mechanism for dealing with pain and the often relentless struggles in life. Perhaps a return to the simplicity of the womb and carefree state of bliss.

Addictions be they food related ( comfort eating ), drugs, sex, co-dependency or alcohol  are all related with a common them. What is this common theme? It is some perceived lack of something in life. And the ‘addiction’ is a mechanism ( that may well be past the sell by date ) that is functioning to fill what is missing in your life by numbing your pain or just as easily maintaining some kind of status quo.

It is often very difficult for the so called addict to admit to them self they have a problem, even more difficult to realise that in order to regain their life they need to do one of two things.

One. Seek professional help and or

Two. Seek something much more encompassing, bigger than them self to become free of that old addiction.

I offer a comprehensive and respectful professional service that can help you both free your self from serious addictions and equally fill your life with something far more satisfying and meaningful.

Please get in touch with me for professional assistance when, and only when, you are truly ready to break free of the prison of addictions and start to live a much more meaningful and satisfying life.

So, I bet you are wondering what happened to the ‘hopeless alcoholic’. Well acting on Jung’s invitation, he found something bigger than himself. He gave up alcohol and was closely involved, a personal acquaintance of one of the founders of the world famous AA – Alcoholics Anonymous.

Spirituality In Coaching and Therapy – Newcastle NLP and Hypnosis Cafe Monday 7th February 7-9pm : Gosforth Library Newcastle NE3 3HD : £10 Including Biscuits. Book online below.

When we come direct from heart space we create an energetic connection that surpasses the concept of empathy or our multi-sensory capacity. In doing so we create the neutral void that two souls can share to explore, discover, test, challenge and shift. For us, this is our recipe for lasting and generative change.

So in this café Paula and Nigel will facilitate your unpacking of the deeper and more connecting ways in which yours and our therapeutic alliances work. How they are formed, how they grow and the effect and impact they have on our and the world.

We will open and share our thoughts and processes of how to develop co-created alliances by exploring the concepts of projections and reflections prior to, during and after a dynamic interaction. We will also consider projection and reflection in terms of attracting clients into your life for mutual healing and purposeful learnings.

Every person we meet has something to teach us, and every person has something to say that only they can say. We both believe we attract the clients that will help and be beneficial to our ongoing development. This may also include ‘healing’ your past. viz a vie we meet together to co-create something that is more than mutually beneficial …

From this place we’ll look at working from heart space that dynamically co-creates a change process as being fundamental in effective change and evolution work. We will show you how this offers a place that goes way beyond our understanding of rapport. Indeed it transcends the thoughts that if we shared some common value, belief, outcomes, goals and even purpose we can go anywhere in the relationship.

Can You Make A Living From Coaching or Therapy?

I run regular trainings in Newcastle for people to become certified Clinical Hypnotherapists and NLP Practitioners. Two days ago I received a call from a perspective participant regarding Hypnotherapy Training. One of their really good questions was “Can I make a living as a Hypnotherapist”.

The answer is a very BIG no and yes!

There are many, many training courses where you can become a qualified therapist, coach or hypnotherapist. Currently there is no legislation in the UK to stop anyone stating they are a ‘hypnotherapist’ or ‘coach’ any reader can do it right now. Some will get a ‘qualification’ yet if you want to make a good living as a professional people helper YOU NEED CLIENTS, no matter how good you think you are or the training you have received.

I strongly recommend Andy Austin’s Brass Bollocks [ if you will follow the process ] and then be prepared to commit to the time it takes to generate lots of clients AND build a reputation and successful practice!

Andy is someone I have done a great deal of training with, who I regard as a truly consummate professional, Andy Austin has stated …

A little humility will save you a lot of humiliation“.

There are so many products out in the market promising you can make £x,xxx, xxx in a year. This is a big sham! One of the biggest deceptions going in my opinion. There are no get rich quick schemes and if this is what you want you may well be in the wrong profession! Yet, the strategies are generally good BUT it takes time to build a good reputation, referrals and a professional practice.

My personal experience, never bothering to follow any of these get rich schemes was it took me five years to build a profitable practice in therapy. I am an ex-software engineer and have some savi regarding how to build an internet presence that works for you.

I was teaching hypnosis and NLP by 2005 and it is now 2011. This is five years in time and five years in reputations and referrals. Unless you have a massive number of contacts do not expect to make a living as soon as you are qualified. I think this applies to any professional practice, therapy or other …

One of the most important pieces of experience I can offer is you can do it. It usually wont happen over night. It takes practice, time and a real commitment to helping people transform their lives – as well as your own! If you are currently working I suggest you create what I call a ‘parachute fund’ to help you on your way, to transition between a job and a true calling. Don’t do what I did and sell your house to create you business, it is way too risky!

So, I sold my home and quite my job as a full time software developer and programmer to pursue my dream. I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone because it was very hard and was a one way ticket to survive and  flourish or go bust. I followed my dream …

Anything and everything to do what I love, my family and friends said I was mad to give up a lucrative job … YET … my heart was elsewhere in the future … and eventually … this came true … It was not easy! It is really hard work!!

Follow your heart … … … and at the same time, realise you do need to make a living in the process ….

Some hints and tips on what not to to … Basically don’t lie about yourself.

In therapeutic practice, there are so many people advertising skills they simply haven’t got.  For instance …

Do not advertise what you are not or make somewhat ridiculous claims on what you can do for clients. This includes ridiculous fees that simply do not attract clients.  The [ ] are examples of what I personally know has failed for certain people who try to present themselves as therapists or coaches.

  • £125 coaching by skype [ 4 clients in 18 months, two non paying ]
  • Child behaviour Specialist . [ Physically abusing their children by smacking then in the face and mouth ]
  • Saying you have 100% client success [ everyone knows this is not so ]
  • Divorced mother specialisation [ still married and ongoing incredibly troublesome divorce ]
  • Relationship expert [ 20 years of infidelity and non resolved personal issues ]
  • Get your magic job [ no income from therapy, dependent on the state for financial support ]
  • You can make a living doing what you love [ no income except state / partner dependent ]

Make you fees plainly accessible to one and all

The most well known and successful UK therapists are from £125 – per hour or session. These are the people who have 10 to 15 years plus of experience and practice to charge this. Get real. You will not compete with these people right away. These are well developed and recognised professionals. Better to charge £45 per hour and get some clients while building a real reputation.

The real trick here is to build up a practice

  • Don’t listen to anyone who tells you to up your prices especially when they have no clients of their own.
  • Get your Internet Site presence up and for the world to see.
  • Make presentations to your local therapy and counselling associations.
  • Do free work until you have people that will recommend you.
  • Be true to what you believe is right and set out to make a difference.
  • Patience and the rest will come with dedication.

Follow your dreams while you study and practice hard!

Weigh Loss Hypnotherapy Newcastle Jesmond Gosforth Hexham

Struggling to become a desirable and healthy weight is one of the most common and often ever present problems people today are facing. Weight issues are not usually genetic, probably not your diet and not destiny. You can change and this means cleaning up your past and changing your attitudes and habits to support more than just losing weight.

There are very many reasons or causes for this problem. Knowing the reasons as to why you are overweight and potentially emotionally depressed with the situation usually wont help you lose weight and keep it off. Changing who you were and becoming the person you want to be will. There is very likely some connection with your past, an emotional issue or maybe a habit and attitude you need to change.

Do you know many over weight people suffer from

  • Low Self Esteem
  • Negative Thoughts
  • Lack Of Confidence
  • Diet – Comfort Eat – Diet – Comfort Eat Cycles
  • A Longing To Discover Real Love

If you have tried every diet or self help book you can and are still getting nowhere fast and you are still fat then read on :

There are three things you honestly need to know about and do to make the changes you truly want in your life happen.

Firstly knowing how the benefits of changing your weight will effect you is extremely important. In short there needs to be a real purpose in your losing weight. It is not about losing weight in and of itself. It is what you will get from losing weight. This may be feeling much more confident, feeling more attractive, increased health benefits and leading a more active life in all areas.

Secondly you need to understand there is some underlying emotional pain that is creating and sustaining your current problem. Remember the brain seeks things to make us feel better. Comfort eating can and does alleviate emotional pain BUT it is only temporary. You eat, feel a little better, feel guilty about binging as well as the unresolved emotional pain and then the cycle starts again like ever increasing circles!

Finally you have to do something about it and then get on with living the way you want to live. This involves getting professional help to help you make changes in your attitude and coach you through the change period to a much better life.

The Brain Stuff

The brains main function is to keep the body in which it resides alive and functioning and to find food, reproduce and other vital requirements. It does this by a complex neuro-chemical endogenous reward mechanism. Simply put, finding food, sex and the other essential needs creates a neuro-chemical reward and makes us feel very good. If you continue looking outside yourself for this you always will …

This system of reward is driven sequentially like this:

Stimulus -> Desire -> Action -> Reward

Let’s call this the SDAR cycle.

Stimulus to find food, sex, or other essential need like security. This can come from your environment, like seeing some favourite food, your partner or even looking for a more comfortable or secure living environment. Stimulus can also come from the inside as in when we think about our emotional state, think about problems or think about a missing loved one.

Desire is thinking about what you want and also what is painful in life. When the pain or emotional turbulence becomes too strong you seek to find a way out. One way is finding something to alleviate the pain, this is temporary and may be eating a cake, chocolate or any activity that temporarily shunts negative thoughts, pain or emotional issues off to one side. But they are still there!!

Action in this case, is putting the next best alternative into action. Usually a stop gap measure. This is doing what you have always done and hoping for a different result. It wont happen, sorry. You need to change what you do. And this means a fundamental change in your attitude towards yourself!

Reward is the feeling you get when you do something to alleviate your emotional pain. Your brain releases some good chemicals and you feel good for a short while but it doesn’t last and then the cycle starts again.

  • What if you can stop this cycle?
  • What if you can honestly heal the emotional pain that is at the heart of your situation?
  • What if you really can make and sustain positive changes that will give you the life and feelings you really what to have?

Comfort eating, drinking or any other activity that temporarily assuages the underlying emotional hurt or pain you are feeling and is a substitute for addressing your real needs and desires. You can honestly never get enough of second best! So now is your open window to let some fresh air of change into you life.

And here is your invitation to take action …

Buddhism, Enlightenment and Learning How To Feel Better – Part Three

thailand buddha handImage by FriskoDude via Flickr

Carrying on from the previous post about NLP and the connections to Buddhism or more precisely one of many ways towards what is tentatively called enlightenment or as I prefer to say living in and having as authentic a life as possible and being comfortable in your own skin …

So, having read the last post and having acknowledged the positive purpose of the unwanted emotion, we can then use one of many NLP therapeutic processes to help heal the regrets of the past.

One of the simplest methods of doing this is to change, what is know as the sub-modalities of the ‘memory’. Our memories are re-experienced through our five senses and the sub modalities are the smaller components of each of our five senses.

Here is one way for you to heal your own regret. Work on one specific ‘regret memory’ at a time and follow the process all the way through.

  1. Remember a situation or memory that at one time you did regret but now, when you think about it you realize and acknowledge the learning and the value of that learning such that having had that experience has in fact made you a much better, more rounded person with far greater resources and skills. Let’s call this the ‘reference memory’.
  2. Still thinking about the memory you, at one time regretted, but now see this as a resource; answer the following questions, making a list of your answers.
    • Where is the memory located? Point to it! Is it up to your left, down to your right, is it central in front of you, is it behind you to the right? You need to find the spatial location. Find out where abouts in your own personal space the memory seems to be.
    • Is the memory colour or black and white?
    • Is the memory like a picture, series of pictures or a DVD movie?
    • Is the memory life size, smaller or bigger?
    • Do you see yourself in the memory or is it like you are looking out of your own eyes?
    • What sounds accompany the memory and what is their location? There may be many or none!
    • What smells are you aware of that accompany this memory?
    • Is the memory sharp and clear or fuzzy and blurred?
  3. Write all your answers down and then go and make a cup of tea and come back in a few minutes.
  4. Now think about the specific situation, memory or incident you do still regret and answer the following questions, make a list of:
    • Where is the memory located? Point to it! Is it up to your left, down to your right, is it central in front of you, is it behind you to the right? You need to find the spatial location. Find out where abouts in your own personal space the memory seems to be.
    • Is the memory color or black and white?
    • Is the memory like a picture, series of pictures or a DVD movie?
    • Is the memory life size, smaller or bigger?
    • Do you see yourself in the memory or is it like you are looking out of your own eyes?
    • What sounds accompany the memory and what is their location? There may be many or none!
    • What smells are you aware of that accompany this memory?
    • Is the memory sharp and clear or fuzzy and blurred?
  5. You now have two lists of the sub modalities of each memory. Here is how to run your own brain. Look for the differences between the two experiences, for example are the two memories in different locations? Is one color and one black and white? You get the idea right! Differences here are the important factors!
  6. Start to make the sub modalities ( one at a time ) of the ‘regret’ memory the same as the ‘reference memory’ you used to regret and notice how your emotional response changes. It is your brain you can make any changes you want to make. Changes can be changed back or kept depending on how you feel.

Now maybe Buddha did not use this specific NLP process ( there are rather a lot to select from ) as he took many days to achieve his enlightenment and this can change how you feel much more rapidly. In a matter of minutes, you can have really practised this skill more fully. But perhaps Buddha had, like the rest of us, a great many regrets so he worked through them all, systematically, one at a time. NLP like Buddhism is about continued practice so please accept the invite to change, one at a time, the things you regret.

NLP is about learning how to run your own brain to get the kind of results you want in a systematic way.

Clean Language Clean Therapy ™ Solutions | Newcastle Hypnotherapy | Newcastle Hypnosis

Newcastle Hypnotherapist Nigel Hetherington demonstrates Clean Language leading into the Clean Therapy ™ model to assist in exploration and a solution orientation with one of the participants.

I have recently been working in Alaska delivering Clinical Hypnotherapy training. Here is the first of two parts of a demonstration of Clean Language and my Clean Therapy ™ Model.

One of the things that make the Clean Therapy ™ approach so powerful is clients never have to talk directly about their problems, which can often cause them even more distress. Using metaphor and physical movement the Clean Therapist directs the process of change at a different level of internal experience that the origional problem. That is, a metaphoric representation is created and then explored. As the metaphor is explored and changed the problem representation will naturally have been explored and changed too.

Change Your Mind – Change Your Feelings

Albert Einstein is said to have commented “Problems cannot be solved by the same level of thinking that created them!”

Here we use a metaphor to represent the problem state and the metaphor IS a different level of thinking!

This is a really neat process to help people move from unresourceful states to really positive and resourceful ones. Using emergent metaphor to change the internal representations or problem states as a 2nd order change process.

The process is created by Kevin Creedon and know as the Cloud Process.

Neurolinguistic Programming or NLP is a kind of pseudo psychology developed in the 1970’s. It has grew to massive fame in the UK largely because of Paul Mckenna’s TV shows. NLP is a successful and powerful way of running your own brain, increasing your confidence, managing your state as well as learning and developing ethical influencing and communication tools. It is also a great deal of fun in the learning!

Excellent content, great presentation, great group. All if it linked together, I have really enjoyed it and learned a lot from the course, very useful.

Kim – Manager Outdoor Activity Centre

Taking an NLP Practitioner training will of course not solve each and every one of your problems yet it will give you tools you can use to take much more control of your life and generally feel much better about it. Hypnosis To Relieve Stress and Worry

Mel Gibson's mugshot from his 28 July 2006 arr...

Image via Wikipedia

Movie super star Mel Gibson has recently had a mammoth 10 day hypnotherapy session to help him cope with all of the stress in his life.

Stress can be defined like this: All people have an ability to cope and thrive in a natural environment with natural pressures. When a persons ability to cope with natural pressure is exceeded, then there is an excess of pressure, this excess pressure, the excess an individual really can’t cope with is called stress.

Hypnosis can be used very effectively as a therapy for anything that is the human condition, to change behaviour and habits – and also for self improvement.

A great deal of peoples stress is caused by thinking the worst will happen and is exacerbated by telling yourself how bad it can get, that you can’t cope and then thinking and replaying all of this over and over again in your mind. Being stressed over a long time is known to be very bad for both physical and emotional well-being.

there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so. To me it is a prison– Shakespeare, Hamlet

Hypnosis is an extremely effective way of reprogramming your brain so that you can deal with excess pressure and stress in more healthy ways. This is the first step, change how you feel. Secondly learn new ways to manage stress and third create ways of being that are intended to stop you getting into stressful situations. If stress really is getting you down and destroying your life, give me a call to find out how I can help you.

Buddhism, Enlightenment and Learning How To Feel Better – Part One

Buddha statue, Kamakura, Japan
Image via Wikipedia

A great many people who are exploring self development, NLP, personal psychologies, Hypnosis and other healing arts are often also attracted to what I will term as spirituality. Perhaps the most psychologically sophisticated and advanced spirituality on Earth is Buddhism.

As one story goes after plenty of other worldly experiences and adventures Buddha whilst sitting under a Bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya waiting for illumination got to meet a crabby old demon called Kama-Mara. Now some call Mara ( hear the drum role ) a lord of darkness, an evil lord and others say he was a tempter of the nascent Buddha with the temptations of lust, desire, fear and regrets.

Just before Kama-Mara arrived the soon to be enlightended Buddha was surrounded by his followers and hangers on who all sung his praises. But surprise surprise, when Kama-Mara arrived with his massive and terrible army all of the nascent Buddha’s entourage all did a runner and left him on his todd.

You see, Kama-Mara was responsible for, let us say ‘tempting’ Buddha or to put it another way testing, even creating the almost enlightened Buddha’s abilities so Kama-Mara was in fact a very necessary catalyst. This is similar to the anti hero having a very specific role to play, not unlike Judas Iscariot, but that is a different story. These temptations or tests were not like today’s driving test or GCSE’s or some written exam. Oh no dear reader, these were psychologically energetic, potentially destructive and of course if the story is true, physically, very real practical exams with no resit options.

The first temptation Kama sent, by proxy too, was his three daughters Regret, Fulfilment and Desire. He sent his children to do his dirty work.  Like a politician sending in expendable soldiers. These, the nascent Buddha, being still on his immovable spot was so able to refute one at a time desire, regret and fulfilment.

Kama then transformed into Mara and with his army of ogres sent weapons of all description flying towards the sitting Buddha but when the weapons entered his ‘field of non-entity’ the weapons transformed into lotus flowers. Fear and belligerence was dissolved.

Enraged and thwarted ( don’t you just love that word! ) Mara transformed into Dharma, the lord of social duty and spoke to Buddha “You are a Prince of the realm man!, haven’t you seen the news? Looked at the internet? There is a global recession and the people need to have hope and a figure head, that is you my prince, to inspire trust and stability. Do you duty! You must do what is expected of you!”

But Buddha was completely unmoved by this appeal to social duty and called on the Goddess Mother Universe to bear witness that he, Buddha, has the right to be. And the Goddess gives her blessings and acknowledgement.

The elephant that Dharma ( the entity formally known as Karma-Mara ) is riding bows to Buddha, the army of ogres retreats and Dharma in Buddha’s light is dissolved. Buddha then becomes, as this story goes, enlightened.

The second part of this article will explore this story looking through a different lens and lead on to how you can apply this transformation of consciousness to yourself in our more modern world.
