Public Speaking Hypnotherapy Newcastle

Mean while, you can feel your heart racing. You suspect that you are going red in the face and you can feel your sweaty hands shaking uncontrollably. You are wondering what people will think as your blood pressure increases. Now its your time to speak.

If some of that feels familiar then its safe to say there is a problem when it comes to group or public speaking. It is far more common that most people realise and the good news is it doesn’t have to be that way. It can actually be an enjoyable experience and Newcastle hypnotherapy can lead towards this.

The Disproportionate Stress Response to Public Speaking

Heart beat quickening, sweaty hands, dry throat and increased blood pressure all all physical signs your body is reacting to a stressor. This is a normal response to a dangerous situation. Being chased by rabid wolves should produce such a response by way of running away or even fighting a wolf away.

But most of the time if not all of the time you are not in any physical danger when doing public speaking. Knowing a little about what is happening neuro-biologically during a stress response is useful in understanding what is happening.

When there is ( perceived ) danger to life it makes sense to have the potential to save it. This is classically know as freeze, flight and fight. In order to do this there are some amazing things the human body does.

Within just over a second of experiencing a stressor your adrenal glands and your sympathetic nervous system have released adrenaline into your blood and to many of the major organs in the body.

Your heart pumps faster, your eyes dilate and you stop digesting food. You lungs open up more for extra oxygen. This is you sympathetic nervous system in action.

In a few seconds more your blood is deluged with glucocorticoids which facilitate having much more glucose in your blood to supply extra energy to your muscles. But wait! This is about public speaking, not escaping from wolves.

Creating the Experience of a Major Stressor from Thoughts

One of the useful things we humans can do with thoughts is we can worry and obsess about what can go wrong. This is actually very useful as this is how we can avoid such problems planning strategies that serve us well.

Anxiety can be defined as obsessive worrying about the future that has physiological negative consequences. Its normal to worry about ‘bad events’ as we generally perceive potential losses far more negatively than potential gains for an equivalent loss and gain. And in general it takes more positive experiences to cancel out just one bad one.

So by just entertaining the possibility that a speech can go horribly wrong with lots of negative consequences can activate our stress response. With a good imagination, imagining the worst our body ends up preparing our flight or fight mode. This in a nutshell is the experience of public speaking anxiety.

And its not just a one way system of thoughts creating your physical experience of anxiety. When the body is feeling anxious this gives the very real physical experience of danger which feeds back into your thoughts and makes it worse.

Please read on to see how hypnotherapy Newcastle can help you deliver a great speech and stay focused on what is really important.

Psychology of Public Speaking Problems

Have you ever talked with a really negative, depressing type of person? Have you noticed how they seem to expect the worst, are caught up in problems and not much fun to be around? Well if you are worrying, fretting about Public Speaking performance you are probably doing the exact same but you are talking to yourself.

A very common aspect of anxiety is the use of self talk to generate problem focused scenarios that have the power to cause anxiety, worry and the physical conditions of a stress response. “What if …” is by far the most common way people make themselves anxious. Here are some examples.

  • “What if I forget what I am supposed to say?”
  • “What if I make a fool of myself?”
  • “What if I shake and sweat?”
  • “What if I can’t answer questions?”
  • “What if I blush and faint?”

All of these are pretty common ways people make themselves more anxious about Public Speaking. If you think about it, these questions are a form of unhelpful self hypnosis that negatively affect a persons state. But it’s not just the words!

The tonality and speed of how we talk to other people can change the meaning of the words. So if a person talks to themselves in a fast and ‘worrying’ tone it will have more of a negative impact. And there is more though! These ‘what ifs’ lead to further unanswered questions for instance;

“What if I forget what I am supposed to say?” implies that something will happen as a consequence, of course it would. It could lead to huge embarrassment and humiliation, it could lead to not being asked to present that important presentation again and not being invited for a pay rise, promotion and extra bonus, it could lead to reassignment to Sunderland.

You are creating a very large and negative self fulfilling prophesy because you have been rehearsing what could go wrong.

Physiology of Public Speaking Problems

You are activating your stress response. This is indicative of hight sympathetic nervous system arousal so there is plenty of adrenaline and noradrenaline  in your system. You heart is probably beating faster, your systolic and diastolic blood pressure has increased, your mouth is dry and there are probably knots in your stomach.  You are probably not having what is called a good time.

Meanwhile, your brain is analysing your body responses, making meaning of the various aspects of the unwanted stress response and coming to the conclusion that your body is not having a good time and this really does influence your mood and adds to the anxiety you are experiencing. Its a vicious circle.

So about now all of those imagined fears are probably to make a physical manifestation. You feel you are starting to visibly shake, all of those ‘worst case scenarios’ have their opportunities to be enacted, blushing, word amnesia to name just a few. Your breathing is likely a bit too fast and high in your chest so both literally and metaphorically you are unbalanced and off centre.

Three Things Really Good Presenters Know

There are three aspects to doing a great presentation that you can learn ( through practice ) to do in order to dramatically improve your performance when engaging in Public Speaking. There are more than three but these three are big ones!

  • Stay Relaxed in the body. Avoid unnecessary tension and stay relaxed.
  • Use your peripheral vision. Avoid focusing myopically on anyone or anything and stay peripherally open.
  • Quiet on the inside. Avoid talking to yourself ( on the inside ) as this splits your attention. Learn through experience to flow!

Hypnotherapy for Public Speaking Fears

Public speaking is a very, very common fear. It could be a cultural, British thing and also likely a combination of perceived ‘high stakes’ and lack of experience of speaking to groups and large gatherings. In short it is perfectly normal!

Hypnotherapy Newcastle can help you to learn how to manage and change your fears into ways to start to rehearse how you actually want your performance to be. After all it makes much more sense to plan for success that failure. Also we will be using hypnosis to help you feel much more comfortable, so ideally you can enjoy the whole experience and keep your attention focused on your audience.

Some methods that are not used at Newcastle hypnotherapy are visualising the audience naked. This is a pretty old and I think a really odd idea. If I walked into a group for a speaking engagement and the audience were naked I would leave, not the kind of group I would want to talk with. This kind of technique probably says a lot more about the therapist and their ways of ( not ) thinking.

Other methods that will not be used are the arrogance based ones. These include, but are not limited to having mantras like “fuck the audience, I am in charge here”, “these people are mine” and talking over the top of any peoples questions. I found these uncharming techniques from people who have seen other hypnotherapists before they found me.

Hypnosis To More Deeply Connect With Your Goals

Hypnosis can connect intention and desire with action. A huge misconception is the idea of manifesting. And that is the problem, without action ideas are just thoughts. You can sit and ponder all you want about an ideal partner, perfect job or changing the world. Unless you act you are only doing a small bit necessary to realising your dreams.

A large component of what anyone that finds both success and deep connection with their outcomes or goals is to actually initially feel them. We can all say “Yes I want X”, “Yes I want Y”, but how often do we actually get round to beginning to make them happen, let alone feeling them happen?

This Newcastle hypnosis, recorded during live hypnotherapy training, is a first part of actualising both emotionally as in feeling your goals and mentally as in having a clear thought . After listening you do need to put your ideas and felt motivations into action.

When we feel our goals, the actual feeling makes them become more than some whimsical pipe dream and become a felt sense of desire and wanting. The feeling is akin to a knowing that our desire has taken root and is growing into something that has both a form and physical sensation.

Our body lets us know about hunger, about sleep and about intimate desire with our loved one. Use this hypnosis trance to invite your body to deeply connect with your most meaningful goals and utilise a felt sense of desire to bring about positive change.

Newcastle Hypnotherapy : Fear of Public Speaking – Nigel Hetherington

Hypnotherapy Newcastle can be used to overcome public speaking fear with hypnotherapy so you can feel more confident and reorganise to change learned responses to public presentation. A fear of public presentation is a very common stress response and hypnosis is a particularly affective method to overcome a variety of stress responses.

Excess stress is known to cause heart damage and suppress the immune system. So having regular stress responses that are completely out of proportion to the actual situation are inappropriate and potentially harmful. Using hypnosis Newcastle you will be changing how you respond to perceived threat, stress situations as in public speaking or public presentation. The situation won’t change but your response will change so you can get on with presenting congruently.

For many people the fear of public speaking can cause the same kind of physiological response as a life or death situation. Public speaking or giving a presentation is a genuine bread and butter skill that today perhaps now more than ever is essential in bringing the kind of prosperity into you life that you want. Why is public speaking an essential skill?

It is because in practically all walks of life we as professional managers, directors, team leaders as being top class communicators in order to effect selling our ideas and meaningful values. And to do this we MUST be seen to be absolutely congruent.

In order to pitch and affectively communicate your ideas and beliefs to foster and create supporters in business you must be completely congruent. Congruent is the genuine felt sense of you walking your talk and knowing deeply the truth in the messages you are sending out.

Now imagine you do feel and connect deeply with your message BUT you begin to second guess your audience, you are talking to your self on the inside, reflecting on how you are being received whilst you are delivering your presentation, you begin to think the worst … your non-verbal communication leaks out those negative self thoughts and your presentation is not well received.

If you are preforming in a less than optimal and incongruent way OF COURSE your audience will detect this. And they will detect this on several levels of consciousness. Paul Ekman has a globally acknowledged body of research on what is called micro-signals or micro-expression leakage.

To summarise you need to be able to

  • Affectively communicate your values.
  • Influence others and sell your ideas.
  • Perform with confidence and fluency.

Lions Tigers & Bears – The Fear Public Speaking

a natural danger and stress response from an immediate life threatening situation such as an encounter with a lion, tiger or bear will activate your sympathetic nervous system in the following way.

Sensory information from our eyes and ears and possibly touch will be relayed to the information exchange centre of the human brain, the thalamus. This mixed mode of sensory information is then passed through the reticular formation, a small but complex nucleus in the brain stem and on to the amygdala, where fear emotions are heavily processed.  Following on from this the nerve impulses are shunted, very rapidly to the hypothalamus.

Hypothalamic – Pituitary – Adrenal Axis ( HPA )

The HPA can be understood as the stress response pathway. The hypothalamus is the gateway to our bodies homoeostasis system. This means the ways our bodies keep in balance within the system of life. In a life or death situation the hypothalamus mediates some bodily function. So in a potential life threatening situation the hypothalamus begins releasing CRH which in turn causes the anterior pituitary to release ACHT beginning a sympathetic nervous system response.

So all of this neuro transmitter and hormone release in the CNS and PNS now activate the endocrine system which activates the sympathetic nervous system and prepares the flight or fight response. The result of this is the adrenal endocrine release of catecholamines such as  epinephrine ( adrenaline ) and dopamine and the glucocorticoid cortisol. When the flight or fight response is activates we experience the following physiological shifts:

  • Suppression of the immune system.
  • Adrenal response.
  • Pupil dilation.
  • Vasoconstriction.
  • Increased hear rate.

So, clearly a stress response like that described above is completely out of proportion to the situation. The great majority of public presentations will no be life threatening at all. If you will like to change a mild or major stress response to public speaking get in touch to discover how hypnotherapy Newcastle can help you with public speaking.
