Psycho-Neuroses or just Neurosis is a term that describes a vast array of problem conditions that people seek out counsellors, couches and hypnotherapists to overcome or be free of in a way that makes life more agreeable and pleasurable.

In my simplistic way, this means there are bodily impulses that do not fit well into our thoughts and so a conflict, an internal conflict is created.

This could be a compulsions or ‘addiction’ that is acted out despite our thoughts to the contrary. Or an obsession or desire that is repressed with thought to our physiological / emotional detriment. In other words a problem that is both bodily and cognitively suffered.

One will is the body another will is our mind and when the two don’t meet well,  we experience a dislocation. This may be in our identity, our emotions, psychological wellbeing or in our soul. That said there exists a primary imbalance and from this we suffer in some way.

There is a learned ability for our wordy self to be able to repress or deny our physical emotions and feelings.

For instance have you ever asked a friend ( on watching their non-verbals ) “how are you” and they answer “fine” – when it is painfully obvious they’re not all right.

A conversation two days ago with a good friend, names changed, telling me a story that went like this.

Ken: “Are you all right?”
Jack : “Yes, I’m fine.”
Ken : “Are you sure your all right Jack?”
Jack : “Yes I’m sure.”
Ken : “Jack you are not all right!”
Jack : ” Yes, your right I’m not all right.”

Some History of Concepts

Piaget’s ( The unknown brother of the revolutionary psychologist John Piggot of North Shields ) proposed a child to adult development in four ‘universal’ stages.

  1. Sensory Motor 0-2
  2. Pre Operational 2-7
  3. Concrete Operational 7-11
  4. Formal Operational 11-16

Around the second year from being born, a child begins to enter the world of words. This is a massive evolution from the world of body and feelings.

At around two years old the Pre-operational stage begins and the world of words and symbols emerges. These transcend and include our bodily impulses and experiences.

We can begin to use symbols to describe objects and later concepts in the world. The symbol ‘Felix’ which described the family cat transforms into ‘Cat’ which not only names and describes Felix, it is a generalisation for all cats.

Our thoughts can repress or depress our nature and equally our nature can overwhelm or disregard our thoughts or perceived cultural morality.

Our Emotional Self and Impulses

As a model our amazingly complex brain can be thought of a a three layered structure. This is not how it it – this is a simple model and a good one.

Paul MacClean ( I remember the 3 layer like the three layer toothpaste ) came up with a model of a 3-part brain.

  • Reptile – homoeostasis
  • PaleoMammalian – Emotions
  • NeoMammalian – Thoughts and cognitions

These are complexly interconnected and can and do influence each other.

Our thoughts can and do create emotions. Here is an example. On Sunday my good friend came over ( we were going out to have lunch after a days cycling ) and give me a tin of organic Baked Beans. I cook most of what I eat from scratch. So this was a nice surprise, I haven’t had tins of beans for a long time.

After we had all eaten out ( Anglers Arms Longframlington ) later that day I was cooking a curry. I added the Baked Beans and called my friend who was ( my assumption ) initially gobsmacked that I had added something he eats on its own, savouring the taste ( and it is good – I had eaten a half tin to try them out ) to a curry.

The curry was exceptional. And through a conversation my friend had ( with me ) went through a series of emotions and presuppositions that were not experiential. They were second hand. I did, unintentionally upset his ‘rules’ and not being subject to those beliefs found and exceptional addition to a curry.

Thoughts can and do create emotions. Here is another example. Imagine a lemon and cut it, look at it and then put it in your mouth. Bite it and taste that lemon juice in your mouth. In your direct experience there is no lemon.

Our thoughts can influence our emotional and physical response.

Neurologically all of this takes place in our nervous system. We cognise in our frontal cortex ( Neo-Mammalia Brain ) and this in turn activates our Limbic System ( Paleo-Mammalia Bran ) which then does something to alert our Reptile Brain – specifically the Hypothalamus which changes our emotions and physiology. And then alerts the rest of our nervous system in a reciprocate feedback loop.

The Inner Religions War And Questioning Your Inner Culture

Integrating complementary systems such as impulses and thoughts is not about one dominating another and creating a dominating hierarchy. There has been enough of this with religions, following a guru or warring peoples.

Our evolution and future as a people and certainly individuals is not to be found in dominating and warring hierarchies. The way forward is understanding and integration.

I think about integrating our internal warring factions as facilitating a complementary way both aspects of our thoughts and behaviours can be at peace, co-existing together and thrive. Just about any problem behaviour can be re-framed to have some positive aspects. Positive in the sense of attempting to accomplish something above and beyond the actual behaviour.

For instance, as a general example lets take a man with a cat phobia. Cognitively this man knows he is in no real danger for a cat. Yet on sight or smell of any cat there is a full on phobic ( stress ) response that just takes over.

A phobic response can be thought of as ‘your’ autonomic nervous system, the sympathetic branch activating the flight / freeze / fight response in a wholly inappropriate way for such a situation.

Now for some that may read ‘silly’ but swap the context for public speaking anxiety, job interview nerves,  spider phobia, an unwanted addiction or a fear of flying and you have pretty much the same category of thoughts and emotions at internal conflict.

Adrenaline And The Amygdala

All of us mammals have a limbic system. The limbic system is a deep brain region that is all about emotions. Emotions here is defined as what we feel and NOT the meaning we attribute to what we are feeling. The neuro chemical biology of hate and anger is incredibly similar to what we feel with love and joy. The same neuro-chemicals are present in both states and it is the attributions of meanings that ‘consciously’ define out state, mood and long term temperaments.

Take a particularly negative stressor and the amygdala, a small nucleus in the limbic system, will become energetically active and will mediate a sympathetic nervous system response complete with danger and anxious arousal. Go for a run or play on a roller coaster and the sympathetic nervous system will activate BUT without the amygdala. The difference is massive.

Positive stressors, like running, a scary film or bungey jumping ( if you are that way inclined ) produce gluco-corticoids that mediate positive stress responses. When the amygdala is involved this equates to worry, negative stress and what we know as worry. It’s almost the same system, its the same system the difference is the meaning, conscious and unconscious, we make of experience.

There is almost always an adrenaline and noradrelanine release when the sympathetic nervous system activates, like being angry or in-love it is the meaning that is attributed to the physical sensations that are important.

Anxiety Your Body and Environment

Your brain is always receiving and processing information from your body. The psychologist William James proposed that the body actually has an emotion and then the brain makes sense of this. This is not a crazy or strange as this reads. If you are tense, your muscles are stiff and locked,the bio-feedback from your body will actually mediate your emotions. This is why a massage can feel so relaxing and stimulate a relaxed mood.

In a psychological experiment, conducted by Schacter in the 1950’s, it was discovered that your brain has been shown to attribute a bodily state , in this case anxiety to the immediate social environment.  This means if you are a setting where anxiety and worry are common place the feelings you feel will be attributed to the environment. Environment means people around you.
