They can then be shocked ( they never signed up for that but hey ho ) electrically instead of receiving their reward of food. Rats will quickly stop the reward behaviours when they get a shock.

They can then, with a little encouragement learn to do the exact shock reward behaviour when they realise that instead of the shock they will get their food pellet. When the same structure returns a reward or punishment depending on the rats outcome, they can change learned behaviours.  They can change.

When there is a ‘structure’ to the thinking and behavior that is anxiety producing, you can find this structure and with effort interrupt the problems structure.
