When I hear someone say they are depressed I want to know what they mean by that, what are their circumstances and how come they call themselves depressed.

The cold semi scientific, semi psychological diagnosis of ‘depression’  is a label and that label, perhaps described by a professional, is just that a label. It does not define a human being. It can define a set of life conditions that at the moment fits a diagnostic criteria. We are not a diagnostic criteria.

I am much more interested in what you feel and equally what you would like to feel differently moving forwards. This can be the first steps moving forward to a more active, engaging and colourful life.

Statistically around 20% of people will suffer a depressive episode during their lifetime. So you will probably know some people who have been depress and have made full and complete recoveries.

You probably already know that exercise, changing your breathing, yoga, changing negative self talk or going for a walk will help but the symptoms include a lack of motivation and believing your own negative self talk. This is where hypnotherapy can help.

They make the cast that conscious or cognitive biases can be a powerful agent in the inability or retardation of Unconscious or Autonomic aspects of the individual personality, memory and life experience can not easily become a resource to be utilised.

This really means that our pre-conceptions of what is possible, massively accentuated by our conscious mind ( beliefs etc ) can prevent new and natural solutions and ideas that are accessible in our repertoire of life experience coming to the front of our minds. Think of warring nations.

So hypnosis can be a vehicle to get the conscious mind distracted or depotentiated in a safe way, for a period of time thus encouraging and allowing our other than conscious resources to begin the process of affecting a solution to problems which can lead to a synthases of conscious unconscious creativity together.

Other Complementary Conceptualisations

In the Taoist, Zen and Buddhist traditions there is a recurrent theme of life as middle way, a being and a nowness. The idea is deep and founded in the early Eastern practices of spirituality. The concept is simple though not generally easy to affect in our modern way of life. The concept is transcending opposites ( usually in thoughts and words ) to open to experience.

This idea comes up again and again in self help books, therapeutic and coaching interventions yet it is the very cognitive biases ( we do it this way, that is not possible, I don’t believe that … ) we all have that can trip us up again and again, circumventing the necessary experience that can be a door to liberation.

The accent with all the generative approaches is the individual with individual work, guidance and effort can affect individual solutions. It is you that creates.

Going Beyond Our Cultural Conditioned Norms

Jiddu Krishnamurti is one of the writers I have learned a great deal from and someone who encourages a quite serious attitude of moving away from any authority as he categorically states it is the individual who gives authority to another.

So no one, really can offer solutions as an authority to someone else. Yes we can share ideas, but only the ideas, perhaps mutually explored, are of the substantive nature that can yield the fruits of generative change … psychological freedom.

Get me right here, what is being proposed as a vehicle to solutions and a certain freedom from the psychological problems is a deep, deep questioning of any assumptions or pre-conceptions of what is or is not possible. This attitude can be a fresh and nurturing harvest of exploration as a ticket to freedom.

In one of the most important explorations of cultural conditioning and freedom are the dialogs between Krishnamurti and David Bohm ( major contributor to Quantum Physics ) where the discussions explore serious psychological shock or disturbance and one pognient exchange re-evolves around neither inviting or rejecting problems of the psychological sort. Stay with this experience. This can lead to liberation!

Neither reject or invite it. Is this not a similar theme in the Western spirituality of Zen, Buddhism and Taoism? Is this not a similar approach to dissolving or congative biases, our conscious pre-conceptions? And allowing what can happen to happen? I think so.

In his ground breaking book IMAGINE, Johan Lehrer in the first chapter explores the conditions that made one of the most influential people in the music business ( it was not a business for him ) Bob Dylan.

Dylan during a massive tour of America, got very disillusioned with the whole music business. At the end of an exhausting tour decided he was finished with the music industry and would go off and live in a cabin in isolation. Write a book and really do his own thing.

While a clinically depressed person may look and appear to be quite still and energy-less this can most often be quite far from the truth.  Often ( 50% ) a clinically depressed persons blood work will reveal high levels of glucocorticoids. Glucorcorticiods are endogenous steroid hormones released from the adrenal glands in response to AdrenoCorticoTropic Hormone  ( ACTH ) which is itself released from the pituitary gland in the brain.

The human stress response essentially has two parts. The first is a very rapid, seconds, release of adrenalin and noradrenalin from nerve endings to organs and muscles. The second is the release of hormones into the blood stream that mobilise energy and muscles to save life. This second stage begins around 15 seconds and takes minutes to fully activate. The slower, second stage glucocorticoid part can last for many minutes, hours or even days in the body.

Prolonged exposure to glucocorticoids turns off the immune system, tends to stop sexual reproduction and turns of the rest and repair bio-mechanisms in the body.  If this is not all bad enough, with clinical depression, sufferers tend to give up the ghost and think that no matter what they do they won’t get better and often take on the attitude that no matter what is tried it wont get any better.

If this paints a picture in shades of grey with all the missing vibrancy of life missing then it is pretty accurate but … it’s not all bad news. Research suggests ( Time to recovery, chronicity, and levels of psychopathology in major depression ) that many people make complete recoveries within six months to a year and some within 3 – 6 months when aided with professional help. The Inappropriate Stress Response

Of all the species on our planet there are only a very select few that can have a completely inappropriate stress response. What is an inappropriate stress response you may be asking?

An interesting article from the BBC website 7th April is suggesting that there is currently a fuelled rise in depression in England that is caused by money worries. Depression is on the rise and if you had shares in it or the related drug indistries you would be doing well. I will offer some information, as a professional hypnotherapist, on what sufferers can do now to help yourself.

Depression can be described as a very generalist way of worrying about or ‘coping’ with problems. There is a tendency to be thinking about the past and with this reliving the most painful memories, either emotional or physical. People exhibiting ‘depression’ may seem a little withdrawn from the outside work and feel they are powerless to make positive changes in their life.

One of the major researchers into the field of depression, Martin Seligman, has described depression as “Learned Pessimism.” Seligman is describing a way of thinking, which really means the way in which we have learned to experience the world. The way we think can make us have a bias to being either a pessimist or an optimist. A depressive has learned to behave in such a ways that is described as learned helplessness. What is extremely important here is it is very possible to learn to think in different ways.

Seeking professional help can be a very good option, if you get a change consultant who will stay outcome or solution orientated. It can also cause more problems and reinforce depression if the counsellor invites their client into discovering child hood issues, raking up the past and finding the cause of the depression.

The change process is far more likely to aid someone suffering from depression if the change consultant is geared towards and directed to specific solutions with an emphasis in the future. And facilitating different strategies or ways to think that will promote a learned optimism style of how to cope differently.

There are statically many more people depressed now than one hundred years ago. It can be a depressing thought that at any time over 25% of people in America would fit the description of depression. In many but not all cases I don’t believe medications and drugs are the answer. Why? Because they do not change thinking patterns and they do not help depressives adopt new strategies to become more able to adapt and thrive in life’s problematic situations.

Some good news is research shows that one year on from a diagnosis of a major depressive episode 20% of people will be better and still have some symptoms and 40% of people are fully recuperated with no signs of depression.

What you can do to help yourself:

  • Exercise. Go for a 15 minute run. Research shows that a 15 minute run can stop depression for 8 hours.
  • Laugh. Go to comedy shows, watch very funny videos, hang out with people who laugh lots.
  • Pay attention to specific things that are working in your life and celebrate them.
  • Each morning make a list of three things your are looking forward to this day.
  • Each evening make a list of three things you are looking forward to the following week.
