Anxiety, Thoughts and Transformations

When one of my mentors was describing an unusual method of working with someone with a spider phobia, the thought experiment discussed was to lock the client into a room for 24 hours with said spider. I suspect neither the spider in question of the hypothetical spider phobic would have been thrilled at the prospect.

We went on to discuss that after a set period of time neither being able to prevent their responses or escape from them there would be a transformation. This is a reminder to the old and no longer applied psychological change process of ‘flooding’. Where people are forced to physically be with and confront their anxieties and fears. Similar horror stories for the treatment of OCD were once used too.

Newcastle Hypnotherapy Anxiety

So as this post is about anxiety or the semi-unconscious pattern of relational thinking which often creates unpleasant emotional responses; did the ideas in the first paragraph cause you any unpleasant emotions? How did you respond?

One Metaphor for Anxiety

I want to start with one of my metaphors for anxiety. By just using the word anxiety we at best have a generalised idea, a generic psudo-experience of what anxiety may mean for any individual. Think about that in relation to the first two paragraphs.

Some years ago Chaos Theory became very popular with the public in the idea that a butterfly in some distant county, in flapping its magnificent wings could cause a hurricane somewhere else on the globe.

The idea comes from a Strange Attractor phenomena discovered by Edward Lorenz. In his work the mathematical pattern which can be thought to look like butterfly wings are a series of 3 dimensional points plotted within a enclosed space.

What is amazing to me is the lines plotted as the scale of the plot becomes ever and more infinitesimal is that the lines of the plot will never touch each other. That is to say there is an infinite length of line inside a confined space.

This can seem mind boggling like what actually happens when an unmovable object meets and unstoppable force. And this is what anxiety can be like. Confined and continuing with no way out.

No one suffering with anxiety is having a great time. Fantastic energy is being consumed in looping thoughts and thinking which drive emotions which drive thoughts. Metaphorically a Lorenz Attractor.

We know intuitively that our thoughts can effect what we are feeling and equally or feelings and body positions can effect out thoughts. This can be a vicious spiral.

Anxiety is Not a New Problem for People

In his extensive work Jiddu Krishnamurti offers many self inquiry based explorations of the nature of thought and thought in its proper field. ‘Thought will set a limit and then thought will transcend that limit‘ again metaphorically a Lorenz Attractor, infinite distance within a confined field.

In working to resolving our own anxieties in the psycho-somatic field it is important to realise that the thinker of thoughts and the thoughts are not two distinct entities they are one. Practically all eastern spiritual practices have know this for thousands of years.

It is also possible to observe our own thoughts, practices common in meditation again prevalent for thousands of years. Knowing that the thinker of thoughts and thoughts are one makes it possible to explore our own internal self relationships.

Alan Watts talks about the Wisdom of Insecurity and having our material needs like a roof over our heads, enough food and pretty much the rest is all psychological. So he is pointing towards our psychological world where imagination can feel tyranical.

Knowing there really is no such concreteness as security because we can all have worries about the future and regrets about the past, wouldn’t it be quite wonderful to live more in the now, more in the present and knowing the proper limits of thought?

Possible Solutions using Hypnotherapy

There are literally countless ways of utilising hypnotherapy to relate our self to our anxities. A central idea is opening and shaping a hypnotic space where some form of transforming can become possible. Helping to alter the seemingly fixed focus of anxious thoughts.

In experiencing anxiety I believe that in some way we are trying to cope or are simply responding in the best way we can at the time. Hypnotherapy is one of many ways to explore not just new strategies but different ways of coping and living differently.

Our mind in some real sense is limitless. It contains our thoughts, memories and a life time of experience. All this ‘stuff’ is in there and mostly available with the properer stimulus. There is a lot of space. And mind can also focus intently on some experience so finding ways to alter unhelpful focus, as in anxiety, is also a real possibility.

Anxtious About Anxiety : How Hypnotherapy May Help

Many years ago when I worked for a computer software company I was involved with both writing software code and additionally making sure that the end users of the software couldn’t make the programs and their interface crash.

In some sense for some of my role in that job, I was paid to worry about how a user could crash the software. I was, if you like, trouble shooting what could possibly go wrong. This was mostly OK, But, when the deadlines came, myself and my programming companions would demonstrate worry moving into anxiety.

Hypnotherapy Newcastle Anxiety

So lets skip ahead some many years. One of my good friends, for years, has been telling me about an author, they knew I would like and appreciate. Of course I resisted this for many years too. When I eventually started reading the books of Alan Watts, I realised my friend was quite correct.

I almost has anxiety about having wasted so many years without Alan Watts wisdom in my life. But its only the right time to be open to learn something new when its the right time. One of Alan Watts books that I highly recommend is ‘The Wisdom of Insecurity’.

Another way to express this is security is an illusion. We can of course think and feel that we are secure and this is clearly advantageous and quells many anxieties. Of course there is nothing stopping a previously undiscovered comet, an alien race or ‘natural disaster’ wiping all humanity of our globe like a grease spot.

If we make a distinction come working definition that anxiety is the worrying and accompanying negative emotional response about possible / probable future events that may or may not happen. We can immediately ‘see’ that this is a thought constructed realm. It hasn’t happened yet and may not happen at all. And of course it feels remarkable real.

Anxiety and The Stress Response

Biologically speaking our stress response ( heart rate elevation, increased respiration, adrenaline and glucocorticoid production ) are specifically activated when our bodies experience a physical stressor.

This could be defined as having our physical life in immediate danger and accessing the fuel to freeze and play dead, run away or even fight tooth and nail to survive.

In this instance our bodies respond to immediate physical danger and by way of complex electro-chemical interactions kick start our emergency escape systems. Our Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal ( HPA ) system lurches into overdrive accessing and creating massive energy to run away while monitoring the developing situation. A bit like a semi-stuck accelerator on a car.

Our problems with anxiety become transparent because with negatively emotionally driven anxiety, created with only thought and imagination alone the same system ( our stress response ) can become highly activated. And guess what? No physical danger.

And guess what else? Everybody does this from time to time. But for some people this can become habitual because of life conditions or situations where there seems like a huge loss of control in day to day life.

What Can I Do To Ease Anxiety?

If we think about anxiety as thinking about some bad case scenario without any seeming solutions to escape, just a cycle of worry causing negative emotions which in turn cycle into more worry and negative emotions.

One solution is to find a way of the merry-go-round by doing just about anything else. That’s just the trouble isn’t it? It can feel like there is no way off the merry-go-round. The question is then how can I take my mind of the present anxious worries?

One factor in anxious arousal is a lack of feeling of control. So doing anything that can feel like you are making choices ( such as praying, meditating, going for a walk, playing a computer game, doing a cross word puzzle, adding up lists of numbers ) is you making and acting on your choices.

Such activities also makes use of the area in our brains in the frontal cortex ( Dorsal Lateral Prefontal Cortex ) that is part our the worry circuit. So potentially instead of worrying we are using thought to do something more productive.

There are also lots of physical exercises that by way of design make use of both our brain hemispheres. There is some empirical evidence that activities such as Brain-Gym, Swimming, Running, Juggling and Singing ( words and melody ) can alleviate anxiety.

Hypnotherapy In Newcastle To Help You Help Yourself

It took me some years to listen to my good friends recommendations about reading Alan Watts books. Up until I read my first one I had been resisting for all manner of reasons ( that would be a story of what I was doing instead ) but when I did, withing just a few pages I was reading something that was speaking to me in ways that complemented so very much of the work and interests I was engaged with.

Perhaps I can say with some accuracy, that none of what I read was new and at the same time it was a new way of thinking about similar ideas. This is what I call the cascade effect. When there is a threshold passed where ideas, thoughts and actions emerge. For me at that time I simply needed to be open enough to begin reading and see for myself.

And like I said I used to get paid to worry writing software code. What I wasn’t getting paid for was lots of thankless anxiety and way too much stress so I made a decision and chose to leave that job some sixteen years ago and pursue a much more meaningful profession. But that is another story.

If you are struggling with anxiety and the often negative emotional effects then hypnotherapy may be a solution for you.

Serious Problems Require Unconventional Wisdom : Newcastle Hypnotherapy

If you have ever been at your wits end facing what seemed like an insurmountable problem, an unendurable situation or absolutely fed up and ready to leave an occupation seemingly having spent all your reserves … you may well be at the cutting edge of a major break through.

This may well seem highly counter-intuitive but if this can have any validity and potential how can we learn to navigate through an ocean of troubles to reach some welcoming shore having learned something of real value in our own experience?

Unconventional Wisdom Hypnotherapy Newcastle

Consider two warring nations where each in its own way is somehow engaging in what is believed to be right, what is believed to be the only way forward and all of the casualties, damage and digging into two opposing positions that can entail.

Neither opposing sides really wants to budge, to give way or surrender to outside forces. Diplomats may be working to secure peaceful solutions or solutions where the conflicts stops with deals and ideas to proliferate concessions.

Exploring this in terms of the individual and an individual problem, it’s not difficult to see that the individual problem can be idealised as two forces or ideas or beliefs that are pulling in different directions, creating inner conflict.

A Hypno-therapeutic Model

In one of the excellent Books by Erickson and the Rossi’s, ( Hypnotic Realities ) one of the themes or ideas discussed is the Conscious and Unconscious aptitudes of an individuals behaviors relevant to a problem context.

They make the cast that conscious or cognitive biases can be a powerful agent in the inability or retardation of Unconscious or Autonomic aspects of the individual personality, memory and life experience can not easily become a resource to be utilised.

This really means that our pre-conceptions of what is possible, massively accentuated by our conscious mind ( beliefs etc ) can prevent new and natural solutions and ideas that are accessible in our repertoire of life experience coming to the front of our minds. Think of warring nations.

So hypnosis can be a vehicle to get the conscious mind distracted or depotentiated in a safe way, for a period of time thus encouraging and allowing our other than conscious resources to begin the process of affecting a solution to problems which can lead to a synthases of conscious unconscious creativity together.

Other Complementary Conceptualisations

In the Taoist, Zen and Buddhist traditions there is a recurrent theme of life as middle way, a being and a nowness. The idea is deep and founded in the early Eastern practices of spirituality. The concept is simple though not generally easy to affect in our modern way of life. The concept is transcending opposites ( usually in thoughts and words ) to open to experience.

This idea comes up again and again in self help books, therapeutic and coaching interventions yet it is the very cognitive biases ( we do it this way, that is not possible, I don’t believe that … ) we all have that can trip us up again and again, circumventing the necessary experience that can be a door to liberation.

The accent with all the generative approaches is the individual with individual work, guidance and effort can affect individual solutions. It is you that creates.

Going Beyond Our Cultural Conditioned Norms

Jiddu Krishnamurti is one of the writers I have learned a great deal from and someone who encourages a quite serious attitude of moving away from any authority as he categorically states it is the individual who gives authority to another.

So no one, really can offer solutions as an authority to someone else. Yes we can share ideas, but only the ideas, perhaps mutually explored, are of the substantive nature that can yield the fruits of generative change … psychological freedom.

Get me right here, what is being proposed as a vehicle to solutions and a certain freedom from the psychological problems is a deep, deep questioning of any assumptions or pre-conceptions of what is or is not possible. This attitude can be a fresh and nurturing harvest of exploration as a ticket to freedom.

In one of the most important explorations of cultural conditioning and freedom are the dialogs between Krishnamurti and David Bohm ( major contributor to Quantum Physics ) where the discussions explore serious psychological shock or disturbance and one pognient exchange re-evolves around neither inviting or rejecting problems of the psychological sort. Stay with this experience. This can lead to liberation!

Neither reject or invite it. Is this not a similar theme in the Western spirituality of Zen, Buddhism and Taoism? Is this not a similar approach to dissolving or congative biases, our conscious pre-conceptions? And allowing what can happen to happen? I think so.

Something To Consider …

In his ground breaking book IMAGINE, Johan Lehrer in the first chapter explores the conditions that made one of the most influential people in the music business ( it was not a business for him ) Bob Dylan.

Dylan during a massive tour of America, got very disillusioned with the whole music business. At the end of an exhausting tour decided he was finished with the music industry and would go off and live in a cabin in isolation. Write a book and really do his own thing.

So Dylan having decided he was finished with the music industry took some time out. What followed after a month or so off, he began writing some of the most influential and meaningful ( to him ) work that would transform the industry. He had no investment in performing to conventions …

The Bitter-Sweet Lemons of Anxiety : How Hypnotherapy Can Help Beat Anxiety

Everybody knows what a lemon looks like right? Now as you read on, imagine you have a lemon in one of your hands. Feel the weight and look at the imaginary lemon in your hand. Notice the colour and the texture of the skin.

Continue imagining the lemon in your hand and as you do, imagine cutting a thin slice out and from the lemon and recall the smell as you cut into it. The lemon scent that you are so familiar with. Now, imagine looking at that slice and see the light on the cut segment as you see the juice on the skin and smell that juicy lemon scent.

Anxiety Hypnotherapy Newcastle Nigel Hetherington

Now put that lemon slice in your mouth, noticing the texture and bite down on the juicy lemon slice. Feel the juice squirt in your mouth as you really taste the lemon.

Right now, even if you just read the words, more so if you engaged in the process, you are salivating having a physical reaction. Depending if you like lemon or not your face is a little contorted with the imagined taste or maybe you are enjoying the refreshing experience.

Whatever is happening with your face and body, you are responding to an experience that is totally created in your imagination. Another experience totally manufactured in your imagination is anxiety.

Anyone who can make themselves anxious by worry is very good at self hypnosis because you do this to yourself with your thoughts. It’s not a particularly productive or massively useful application of self hypnosis yet that is what it is.

Hypnotherapy and Anxiety

Now the application of Hexham or Newcastle hypnotherapy for anxiety can take a variety of different approaches which will be specific to both how and the type of anxiety my client displays.

Hypnotherapy can address specific problems that a great deal of conscious effort, tapping and not actually dealing with the cause will usually fail to make long lasting positive impact with.

One very important factor is DO NOT expect a miracle effortless one session cure because the anxious person will only worry it WILL NOT WORK and after all how many people do we know that has either been struck by lightning or a meteor? That is unlikely to happen, as are most things people worry about.

Anxiety is predominantly about imagined events and scenarios from a future that may or may not happen. Anxiety is an unchecked worry machine that is focused on a future you don’t want.

Most of us really don’t know about the structure of our thoughts, the types of thought that generate anxiety.

Even less of us have been taught to understand how we think and that by knowing how we think we are so much more able to positively alter the negative thought patterns that produce anxiety.

How Is Anxiety Caused?

The vast majority of anxiety is caused by an making negative internal pictures about the future and an internal voice that asks the ‘What if? and ‘As if?’ questions that will have a tendency to be biased towards negative situations.

Anxiety is related to a perceived lack of control about the environment situations in the future as well as a certain predilection to think about bad or negative outcomes.

As an example let’s say you have to do a presentation to a group of people.

An anxious persons response may be immediately imagine the group laughing at them because they have started blushing, turned red and choked up. And remembering the lemon started feeling bad.

A non-anxious, someone else, may have thought “A presentation about what?”

Another hugely important factor is where the sufferer of anxiety has the majority of their attention. To worry and think the negative things there has to be a of lack of focus of attention in the outside world and a greater focus of attention within the mind.

Have you ever been worrying enough ( inside your own worry machine, listening to all the what ifs ) that you have completely failed to hear what someone else is saying to you? It’s not that uncommon.

Now what is important ( remember the lemon? ) is that you weren’t born anxious it is a way you have learned to think. Like most thinking patterns it is done mostly without much conscious thought. The good news is you can learn new ways in thinking, ones that offer you more control in how you think.

You can learn new ways of directing your attention so you can be more present in your relationships and ideally start to work to retrain your thoughts and thinking.

How Many Sessions?

How long have you had anxiety for? I don’t think it should take as long to cure anxiety as you’ve had it for though it will take a reasonable amount of time and more so some effort on your behalf.  If you are willing to put effort into your freedom, the release from anxiety because you want to make real positive changes in your life, you can.

An anxious thought pattern may well be “What if I have a session and it doesn’t work?” You are worrying about finances and about your own outcomes and already building a negative anticipation. Don’t worry we will talk this through during our telephone consultation.

A different and more enabling thought pattern is this “Let’s find out what can be done and what my role will be in turning my anxious thoughts off or to a minimum and what role will Nigel have as therapist and coach.”

Phobia Hypnotherapy Newcastle

A phobia is one in a class of recognised anxiety disorders. A phobic response is a fear response. Most often characterised as a highly disproportionate response to some stimulus that is neither dangerous of life threatening.

Hypnotherapy Newcastle can help suffers with the psychological aspects of their irrational or rational phobic responses. The response, a phobic one, is most always learned in our early formative years, a time when learning was way too easy and as such becomes a habit.

Hypnotherapy Newcastle Phobia

As far as is known, there are no inbuilt or hard wired phobias. The myth that people ( and monkeys ) are genetically or disposed to a fear of snakes is simply not true. What is true is there are biases towards a fear of snakes for humans and our primate cousins.

A lab monkey never exposed to a snake in many generations does not have an inbuilt fear of snakes, but, interestingly enough, show the lab monkey another monkey’s fear response to a snake and bingo, there is a massive transference.

Here in the UK, there are no deadly snakes or spiders. Sure there are Adder’s of which I have seen one some four years ago while running in Thrunton Woods on a very hot day. I ran right around that! So a phobia in the sense here is an irrational fear.

The last part of our brain to ‘come on line’ or to be fully myelinated is the frontal cortex. For most adults this happens in the early 20’s. This is the Universes gift to unlearning phobia and fears.

On a neurological level the Amygdala is highly metabolically active in the Limbic System and gives rise to feeling of fear, anxiety and you guessed it phobic responses. In some senses our savior is the Frontal Cortex that through effort and some de-conditioning of the amygdala response can blunt and remove what used to be a phobia.

Another extremely useful response in alleviating phobias is laughter and irrelevance. The more you laugh the less able you are to be phobic. This has some serious reference to your physiology, which is another aspect you can control.

I worked with a client who had a dog phobia. They had a fear of dogs and displayed some physical signs of allergy reaction when in the presence of a dog. Mainly around their eyes and a heavy, labored breathing. After successful resolution of that old response they requested to know ‘why’ is was that way.

During regression hypnosis we traced back the initial imprinting experience to a bus ride when they were six years old. A big dog jumped up at them while they were playing with the dog. Their father became massively anxious and worried that the dog had hurt them, picking them up and ‘raving’ at the dog owner. This seemingly transferred to my client.

Knowing the why’s and hows of a trauma or anxiety imprint are not required in changing behavioral responses. Knowing how this happened wouldn’t, I think, have helped my client become comfortable with dogs. Yet this is a great example of how early imprinting and environment can cause anxiety responses.

Reality Check and the next Miracle Diet – Save Your Money!

This doesn’t mean you are the absolute creator and maker of your own situations. The kind of well meaning yet misguided kind of writing with the promise of hollow hope that support this are pretty poor. Misdirections are the commons understanding of the ‘law of attraction’ or ‘The Secret’. the real secret is you will need to do something about your situation – this means effort!

You know as well as I do, we don’t control our environment or situations.

We can have massive influence on how these are, but control? Come on! By being more emotionally resilient and flexible and having better adaptive responses we are more able to have a better class of problems and rise to the occasion better. We are much more able to shape our futures too.

Having watched the video, I hope you have gathered some real good ideas you will put into practice. The onus is with you.

Anxiety Self Help – Newcastle Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy can and often is a helpful solution to common anxiety, even in its less common extreme forms. What follows are some self help tips for helping you to become less anxious and more at ease and calm in problem situations.

Firstly it is important to clarify what ‘Anxiety’ means here. Anxiety here means worry about the future, the imminent future or soon to be present or even aspects of the past – that will in turn produce consequences in the future.

This will have likely little bearing on certain kinds of anxiety conditions like PTSD though could help with aspects of conditions like a Phobia.

Anxiety Hypnotherapy Newcastle

So in this instance, dispensing with technical terms, we are talking just good old straight forward, bread and butter anxiety. That what most of us know as every day excessive worry.

ANXIETY = UN-CONTROL

Anxiety in this instance is Un-Control. Put this another way, if you could control the future to turn out just the way you want there would be absolutely no anxiety. If this makes sense to you then you are on your way to a little more freedom from anxiety. If this doesn’t then you are not anxious.

There are aspects of the future you can strongly influence and aspects of the future where you are literally in the hands of your own god, the universe or any witnessing deity that happens to be present. The agnostic deity Umnotsure is a favourite, when it can be found.

Understanding what you can reasonably control and what you can’t is an important distinction that can, in most instances, ease life’s stressors or to put it another way ease anxiety.

There are essentially five factors that relate to living more free-er from anxiety and worry and these have much more to do with perception of events and not the events in and of themselves.

  1. Predictability
  2. Sense of Control
  3. Social Support
  4. Outlets for Frustrations
  5. Sense of Getting Better

These five are based in strong research from among others Professor Sir Michael Gideon Marmot’s famous Whitehall study, spanning some 20 plus years and 20 thousand UK civil service and Professor Robert Maurice Sapolsky’s over decades with our hirsute cousins, baboons in the Serengeti. The parallels are scary!

Hypnotherapy Newcastle is about changing our perspectives and adaptive responses to life. When this works well we are gifted with new and alternative ways to progress through life’s challenges and opportunities. Ideally so that we are not experiencing the same old problem, anxiety, again and again.

Hypnotherapy is a way to re-educate the learned responses we have all learned during the course of our lives in a way that is generative and builds in new and more adaptive coping mechanisms so we are not experiencing the same old problems in the same old ways.

You might not believe this immediately but anxiety or excessive worry is a learned habit. In order to be really anxious there has to be an underlying structure or process you use – your imagination – that is in itself a process of self hypnotism. Think about it, to be anxious, you are imagining a future that breeds anxiety.

We would be noting without anxiety, or more precisely the ability to worry, and at the same time, equally in fact, the ability to imagine and create the most amazing futures for ourselves and those who come after us.

It is a double edged sword that makes us, when we truly think, and act, a process in the imagination that could be used just as readily to bring bliss and joy as anxiety and worry.

What Can You Do? Really?

Number one is do, systematically, something about it! You have to be prepared to expend effort to learn a new habit. Think, seriously, about learning to write with your other hand. This is an of itself is an excellent way to stop your mind ticking over in worry mode.

Count up all the time you have been a worry wart! 15 minutes? 1 hour, 3 hours 5 hours a day? Every day? Every day for years? When this number is totalled it is often quite a shock to the system.

Yes can you imagine the kind of differences you could make if the same time just each day was used contemplating and imagining a delightful future. So most people do worry by talking to themselves ( often in a voice tone that they wouldn’t use on another person! ) and imagining a pretty unpleasant future.

There are very likely very specific words or phrases and memories that a worrier will use with some regularity. Discover yourself, what these are and learn, through patience and repetition to reprogram them into something helpful and kind.

So, talking to yourself much more kindly ( answering back is fine too! ) and using the same words to talk to yourself about the future you actually want. Adding what you would like to see and hear. Most of all take time and invest in your long term health and happiness.

Realistic Expectation for Change

This is usually NOT an overnight cure for long term problems. If you have been anxious for many years then it is kind of pretty unreasonable to anticipate an immediate cure that is not medication or surgery based. Even then it is most likely not the case!

This takes effort – and little by little. Think about learning to walk or talk! It takes time and persistence! It does happen, it just takes time, trust me! Reprogramming your internal speech patterns is one way to give yourself more perceived control in life. Remember anxiety is about UN-Control. The more control you can affect the less anxiety.

Excess stress and anxiety is know not to be salubrious. That means your health can suffer with excess stress and strain in your life. After one week of intense stress the thymus gland which is responsible for the production of T-cells, in the endocrine immune system can shrink to 25% of normal size. Lose the stress and the thymus makes a full recovery and can produce the T-cells required for a health immune response.

The philosopher Alan Watts mentioned a right wing democrat ( he moved from the UK to the US ) that because is their right wing ( metaphor ) attitude would never take a left turn when driving. All they did was drive talking right turns, this is mad! To be able to KNOW the rough is to know the smooth, to know good is to know evil. And to know anxiety is to know calm.

Anxiety Hypnotherapy Facts

Hypnotherapy Newcastle is is about a real integration with seemingly inconsolable opposites. Or at least to get going in ways that work, where you can see and feel you are making progress. Let’s be clear sometimes ‘miracles’ in hypnotherapy happen but that is not a good commitment from you, to have an expectation that a hypnotherapy can ‘cure’ you from years of suffering in one session is learning in some aspects to continue to be helpless.

There has to be a real commitment from you, and that is a required ingredient in real change, change that is generative. If it wasn’t think about how many hypnotherapists, theta healers or ‘magic’ workers would be claiming real success. Truth is the real ones don’t. The charlatans and snake oilers do. Sorry but this approach, the one I apply is psychological and often physiological and you wont, can’t be a passive observer!

This approach helps you deal with the head and body aspects yet at the same time most requires input and energy from you. You will be given tasks, post or pre session to implement the psychological and behavioural aspects of change into your life.

A very common aspect of anxiety is the use of self talk to generate problem focused scenarios that have the power to cause anxiety, worry and the physical conditions of a stress response. “What if …” is by far the most common way people make themselves anxious. Here are some examples.

  • “What if I forget what I am supposed to say?”
  • “What if I make a fool of myself?”
  • “What if I shake and sweat?”
  • “What if I can’t answer questions?”
  • “What if I blush and faint?”

All of these are pretty common ways people make themselves more anxious about Public Speaking. If you think about it, these questions are a form of unhelpful self hypnosis that negatively affect a persons state. But it’s not just the words!

The tonality and speed of how we talk to other people can change the meaning of the words. So if a person talks to themselves in a fast and ‘worrying’ tone it will have more of a negative impact. And there is more though! These ‘what ifs’ lead to further unanswered questions for instance;

“What if I forget what I am supposed to say?” implies that something will happen as a consequence, of course it would. It could lead to huge embarrassment and humiliation, it could lead to not being asked to present that important presentation again and not being invited for a pay rise, promotion and extra bonus, it could lead to reassignment to Sunderland.

You are creating a very large and negative self fulfilling prophesy because you have been rehearsing what could go wrong.

Physiology of Public Speaking Problems

You are activating your stress response. This is indicative of hight sympathetic nervous system arousal so there is plenty of adrenaline and noradrenaline  in your system. You heart is probably beating faster, your systolic and diastolic blood pressure has increased, your mouth is dry and there are probably knots in your stomach.  You are probably not having what is called a good time.

Meanwhile, your brain is analysing your body responses, making meaning of the various aspects of the unwanted stress response and coming to the conclusion that your body is not having a good time and this really does influence your mood and adds to the anxiety you are experiencing. Its a vicious circle.

So about now all of those imagined fears are probably to make a physical manifestation. You feel you are starting to visibly shake, all of those ‘worst case scenarios’ have their opportunities to be enacted, blushing, word amnesia to name just a few. Your breathing is likely a bit too fast and high in your chest so both literally and metaphorically you are unbalanced and off centre.

Three Things Really Good Presenters Know

There are three aspects to doing a great presentation that you can learn ( through practice ) to do in order to dramatically improve your performance when engaging in Public Speaking. There are more than three but these three are big ones!

  • Stay Relaxed in the body. Avoid unnecessary tension and stay relaxed.
  • Use your peripheral vision. Avoid focusing myopically on anyone or anything and stay peripherally open.
  • Quiet on the inside. Avoid talking to yourself ( on the inside ) as this splits your attention. Learn through experience to flow!

Hypnotherapy for Public Speaking Fears

Public speaking is a very, very common fear. It could be a cultural, British thing and also likely a combination of perceived ‘high stakes’ and lack of experience of speaking to groups and large gatherings. In short it is perfectly normal!

Hypnotherapy Newcastle can help you to learn how to manage and change your fears into ways to start to rehearse how you actually want your performance to be. After all it makes much more sense to plan for success that failure. Also we will be using hypnosis to help you feel much more comfortable, so ideally you can enjoy the whole experience and keep your attention focused on your audience.

Some methods that are not used at Newcastle hypnotherapy are visualising the audience naked. This is a pretty old and I think a really odd idea. If I walked into a group for a speaking engagement and the audience were naked I would leave, not the kind of group I would want to talk with. This kind of technique probably says a lot more about the therapist and their ways of ( not ) thinking.

Other methods that will not be used are the arrogance based ones. These include, but are not limited to having mantras like “fuck the audience, I am in charge here”, “these people are mine” and talking over the top of any peoples questions. I found these uncharming techniques from people who have seen other hypnotherapists before they found me.

Anxiety Hypnotherapy – A Living Paradox

Get help with your anxiety problems with hypnotherapy in Newcastle. People are not born anxious, we learn to be that way. Good news anxiety is un-learnable.

Charles Tebbitts stated that one of the ‘rules of the mind’ is that opposing thoughts can not be held at the same time. This is absolute twaddle.

In hypnotherapy Charles Tebbetts is a mighty name from the past. He did really exceptional pioneering work. He formulated some ‘Rules’ of the mind.

One of which is that “opposing ideas can’t be held at the same time” – Apart from the metaphorical contradiction, they can and do and are.

A simile for this is trance. A word for this is paradox and a meaning is transformation from a greater and new perspective.

While anxiety is un-learnable in people and animals, as people it is possible to use the exact same STRUCTURES to transform worry and anxiety into positive anticipation and well-being. This of course takes practice and commitment.

A Bout Of Anxiety

The body’s stress response is activated. Depending on the intensity of the response the terms may be deemed Anxious Arousal ( high ) or Anxious Apprehension ( less ). It is still the same body response.

Positive body stress is actually quite good, this is called stimulation. This is like going for a run, moderate exercise or some other positive activity.

A negative, and usually unwarranted stressor has all the same hall mark plus some metabolic activation of the Amygdala. This is a key neuro-biological difference.

In a fear or anxiety response there are, in a simplistic way, four nuclei in the brain activated. These lead to pretty much the same body responses hormonally.

ANXIETY – FEAR – STRESS

There are four brain areas activated.

  • Amygdala
  • Hippocampus
  • Frontal Cortex
  • Reticular Formation

Not surprisingly the hippocampus ( involved with memory ) is active. This means we are learning to be afraid or learning to be anxious.

The amygdala is all about fear, sexual behaviour in males and is a biological learning component of fear. This little bugger responds well to stress hormones and at the same time, kind of, overrides the normal hippocampus conscious learning function.

The reticular formation is a rhombencephalon, reptile brain nuculii that has a great deal to do with attention and in this instance, the blue spot ( locus coeruleus ) thrives on noradrelanine, a neuro transmitter involved in the stress response.

All of this is a scientific and neuro biological explanation of what is happening at a very small level of detail. Knowing all of this really wont stop anxiety, it is what we can do with this knowledge that can make a difference. A real difference!

Un Learning Anxiety

When laboratory rats ( like in Martin Seligmans ) un-learn learned depression, when OCD sufferors un-learn OCD there are two very important aspects or functions that metabolically change in terms of a stress response.

This is dirt cheep to know and can take effort, sweat and can also happen in just a few hours. The Amygdala lowers in metabolic activity and the Frontal Cortex increases in activity.

How this is accomplished can be a process of hypnotherapy for anxiety, cognitive and behavioural activity and a genuine commitment to change.
