Apart from the odd very unfortunate baby ( drug addicted mother ) no one is born with an addiction. So my assertion is that what can start out as a pleasurable activity perhaps a little bet at the races or the bookies, maybe a glass of wine, perhaps a pill or looking at an adult magazine can over time turn into a powerful preoccupation that can become all too problematic.

Now, how is it that what can start out as fun, pleasurable or something that is enjoyed with a group of friends transform into something that an addict feels they literally cannot live without? I will sum this up in a moment.

Not all addictions begin as pleasurable fun pastimes. Sometimes what can become an addiction initially starts out as a coping mechanism. What exactly does this mean? Let me offer you an example.

Some time ago one of my clients had experienced a bereavement, their last worldly remaining parent had died. Over a period of months which turned into years their initial coping strategy turned into a problematic addiction. When their parent died in order to cope and to try and deal with their emotions they turned to alcohol.

In this instance using alcohol to try and numb the pain they were experiencing ( it is a good number ) their coping mechanism which is very easy to understand why they did it, over time turned into a problematic behaviour and into an addiction. They dealt with their bereavement and gained an addiction.

So to sum up an addiction can be formed by way of an initial coping behaviour or can be formed by some pleasurable activity. Both of these really do have their origin in attempting to feel a certain way. And of course who doesn’t want to feel good?

We are neuro-biologically ‘programmed’ to seek out activities and behaviours that make us feel good. These range vastly for different people. And may include wanting to share time with good friends, eating great food, engaging in a hobby or pastime that we really enjoy. Or some behaviour know as an addiction.

The Dopamine Motivation Connection

Once we discover and find activities and behaviours that in some way make us feel good something curious happens in our brain. This is largely in part due to the neurotransmitter dopamine and the phenomenal way in which we learn, remember and seek out such experiences.

Dopamine produces our seeking and motivating activities to find and re-experienced something we love. This could be as innocuous as a cup of coffee in the morning, a cuddle from a lover or the next hit of a drug of choice.

Somewhere around the middle of the last century some pioneering scientists with their research discovered the ‘brains pleasure centre’. this was discovered using rodent research. A rat with an electrode inserted in its brain could stimulate that same electrode by pressing a lever with its little rat foot.

When the rat pushed the lever it received the small electric current to a certain part of the brain. This was so ‘pleasurable / addictive’ that the little rat would continue pressing the lever, refusing food, sex and water until it died.

More modern neuroanatomy knows this brain pleasure centre as a system of interconnecting areas and functions within the brain. This is the mesocorticolimbic connection.

The Neurological Addiction Pathway : MesoCorticoLimbic

The mesocorticolimbic connection are two brain connection paths and both start in the mesencephalon ( mid-brain ) at a site called the Ventral Tegmental Area ( VTA ). From the VTA there is one series of connection that go out to the cortical areas ( mesocortical ) involved in motivation and emotional interpretation and the other, to the limbic system ( mesolimbic ) which is involved in addiction, learning, reward and serious motivation.

The mesolimbic projections include the Nucleus Accumbens Septi which is a small brain nucleus in the basal forebrain known to be involved is ALL addictive behaviours. This literally means ‘addictions’ are acted on to find the source ( gambling, sex or emotional spending ) and act out the behaviour. Dopamine to a large extent provides the motivation to act out addictions.

And our brains really don’t know the difference ( unless its the magnitude of seeking / motivation ) between something that is really good for us – such as exercise or something potentially catastrophic like excess or long term drug addiction.

Homoeostasis and the Brain

Our bodies ( our brain ) have a kind of status quo. No, not the rock band but a kind of operational tolerances a bit like the maximum and minimum temperatures we set on our central heating system. If it gets too hot, the heating stops, allowing for a cool down and if it’s too cold the heating comes on for a while warming the place up.

The natural or operating conditions within a small window is know as our set point. This varies individually and what is interesting is our initial set point can be altered via addiction. In a peanut-shell our set point can be radically influenced and shaped by our behaviours over time.

As an example, when we eat carbohydrates, our pancreas releases the hormone insulin. Insulin is responsible ( the hormone of plenty ) for the chemical reactions that store away excess ‘energy’ as fat. Now imagine a person who has a regular mealtime, in the evening, at exactly 17:48. They regularly eat potatoes, bacon and sprouts. ( OK, its an example right! )

Now having established this eating pattern for a long time ( think addiction ) at approximately 20 minutes before meal time their pancreas is actively producing insulin in ANTICIPATION to a long established meal time routing. think addiction! There is a set point – established and having all the biochemestry starting ahead of time in response to a good feed … or something else.

The fundamental bit of our brain that is involved in homoeostasis is the hypothalamus. This little bit of kit is ‘monitoring’ all kinds of close up and far out outposts of our body from blood sugar levels, stress hormones and body temperature. What our bodies as physiological and psychological requirements is all being accounted for and in some real sense requested or motivated to get the balance back is by our hypothalamus.

Now this is crucial. We can imagine ourselves into all kinds of emotional states, we can exercise ourselves into emotional states and we can drug ourselves into all kinds of emotional states. Do this enough over time and there is a ‘normal’ state that we are physiologically and psychologically experiencing as the norm. Our thoughts, emotions, behaviours and environment and that whole interaction can influence our set point.

Psychology and Neurology of Addiction

The smoker can go without any hits during a aeroplane flight. The Alcoholic can go without a drink in the face of an imminent personal threat and the cocaine addict can give their baby away to a dealer for the promise of another hit. There are some very real and very different modes of ‘addiction’ which are functions of a personal-environmental interaction.

The US soldier in Vietnam who was a drug user can, on coming home, quit all drugs and becomes socially responsible completely. The environment completely changes.

Dissolving an addiction can happen organically at any time. Letting go old habits can be easier when there is a new or additional kind of perspective gleaned from changing environment, changing thought patterns and doing things different in ways that can provide new meanings and purposes which replace old behaviours, old ways of thinking with something fresh, something that is better than addiction.

Changing life circumstances, environment or situations can free an addict from their addiction just as much as a old thoughts, memories and associations can all be triggers to a set point of homoeostasis of addiction and the sense or accent is finding something better and more connecting that outframes an old addiction and opens up a whole new sense of purpose and can be very freeing.

Any addictive substance or behaviour will activate some very specific areas in the brain. These are called the mezolimbic and mezocortical pathways and are dopaminergic in nature.

Dopamine is the neurotransmitter responsible for motivation or desire to do something or act in some way. In is not really what makes you feel euphoric, good or full of life. Dopamine motivates you to take action. And the more dopamine involved the more addictive.

The Ventral Tegmental Area ( VTA ) in the mid brain has direct neural projection to the Nucleus Accumbens ( NA ) that is specifically involved in all addictions. This path way is the mezolimbic pathway.

The VTA also projects to the frontal cortex. The orbital frontal and pre-frontal cortex. Stimulation here particularly of the left pre-frontal cortex is associated with feelings of well being and even euphoria.

Addictions really seem to begin in one of two ways. The first being some activity or behaviour feels very good and brings much pleasure. Regular usage of increasing amounts or more behaviour are required to feel as good. Do this enough and it stops feeling good and you still want the addictive source.

From a stumulus, not the act of doing, we are massively motivated to perform an action. Liking and wanting are two different kinds of desire and crucially when wanting to stop an addiction a person wants, that is the addiction,  but does not like their behaviour. Now here is the kicker and of course some may well disagree.

An addiction is only a problem when the addict goes through cycles of, lets call it drug abuse, when they want to partake and afterwards hate themselves for having partaken. They love it when they are ‘high’ on spending, arguing, snorting or eating to excess AND THEN the down cycle is self loathing, disgust or promising to whatever deity is available at the time that it will never happen again … and then the cycle begins again.

If there is a cycle of ‘never again’ but again comes, then there is a problem. A problem of the psyche and problem in behaviour. This is the time to request professional assistance in stopping.

How An Addiction Is Created

It’s simple,  you do or try something you like or equally do something that displaces a stress response, like going to the gym, having a pint or smoking something.  Do it enough and BAM you have created a dopaminergic ‘reward’ for some behaviour. Reward is largely encouraged by the dopamine mesolimbic pathway ‘I want or can do this’  and satiation by a whole load of endorphins in the ‘that was good’ pleasure response brain pathway.

With repetition of an, in this case, addictive behaviour, there is a protein called DeltaFosB which builds up and remains long after the problematic behaviour. And this protein massively increases the desire for addiction and for a period of time, a long period, remains and alters basic genetics, promoting the problematic behaviour. The more you do a behaviour, the more DeltaFosB builds up and perpetuates a viscous cycle of addiction.

It works both ways. Good and health promoting behaviours like running or going to the gym or learning cool new things also promote a build up of DeltaFosB and in this way our bodies really don’t know the difference between good practice and potentially damaging practices. It comes down to a realisation of how we want to live our lives and the behaviours we choose or become addicted to.

There are two pleasure components Desire and Satisfaction, that’s wanting it and Yum, got it. The first is a drive to do a behaviour and the second is a ‘reward’ for having done the behaviour.

In terms of addiction, with increased exposure to something pleasurable we will very naturally want more. This is akin to the more of something that feels good, or equally calms a stress response, and very importantly as a result we cognitively know this is good, we derive a huge benefit that is long term and supports our life well. Here is the obverse.

In drug addiction increased exposure leads to tolerance and then means a person needs more of the drug to get the same affects, this is done by way of down regulation of the neuronal synapses and equates to a need more to get the same feeling. Additionally there is an increased sense of wanting more as it seems to make life better, but long term it does not.

Right, So How I Choose Who I Work With

OK, remember the radio station? The person in question who ‘wanted’ to stop was offered by the radio presenter as a candidate. This is a potential RED FLAG for me because they did not seek this for themselves.  I usually reject second hand requests for help in any form of therapy, why? Because it is someone else’s ideas of what another person needs.  So I asked a few questions as to why they wanted to quit. Their answers were kind of OK, BUT, I was really unsure so … Here is what I did.

I did the same structured interview as I do with any potential client. Have them return a questionnaire and arrange a call to check commitment to make a positive change. My email requests all clients to book, that means pay, in advance having has a conversation to determine, amongst other things a potential clients desire to make changes in their life.

I received a call from the radio presenter, not the client,  ( Another RED FLAG ) querying the request for payment. “I thought it was for free?” “No, I replied I do not provide a service for free, there has to be a psychological buy in for change”.

I hope you understand there is a very real equation in that change has a value. Now this potential client, a person who is on a substantial wage, described themselves as a ‘guinea pig’ for a stop smoking treatment. This description of themselves felt very wrong. Imagine describing yourself as a guinea pig?

Said radio presenter said that their company had no budget for this and assumed my services were for free. I invited the potential client to pay for it themselves. A relatively small cos, £123,  for a life change on 20+ cigarettes per day.  I have heard nothing back.

This to me indicates no real desire or investment in stopping smoking. This is not the kind of client I am interested to help stop smoking with hypnotherapy in Newcastle because primarily they have no demonstrable desire to stop, it was just a story for the radio station. Incidentally my interview has not been used.

Trauma And Intrusive Memories Hypnotherapy Newcastle

One of the most effective and content free ways I know to assist clients over and through a personal trauma and / or  intrusive memories is Eye Movement Integration ( EMI ). EMI is developed by Steve and Connirae Andreas.

Content free, very simply means, your clients, my clients don’t need to discuss ( talk about ) and re-live a seriously traumatic episode for you to assist them in making deep psychological and neurological change. Most client’s don’t want to share the intimate and painful details of a trauma, having to re-live it day in day out is enough.

Anxiety really can be a terrible and consuming thing to experience. Another word for anxiety is WORRY. Newcastle Hypnotherapy with Nigel Hetherington can be a real solution for you.

At best drugs will suppress anxiety, they will likely suppress other things too.

If anxiety is really is screwing up your life, you are worrying and worrying and as a result suffering … I can most likely help you change your behaviour. I can assist you in turning your though patterns around. The purpose being to stop worrying and start living a more satisfying and meaningful life.

Cyclic negative, anxiety producing thought patterns tend to go like this.

“What if … but then what, if I don’t … and then What if … but what if …”

So the real key here is to STOP that thought pattern and engage in a better one right …

People who behave anxiously are never anxious about some general things. You are anxious about something specific and worst of all it has not happened. Anxiety is all about thinking about the future and creating, almost always, the worst possible outcome for yourself and others. Think about it, how could it be different if you started habitually thinking about better outcomes in the future?

Hypnotherapy For Guilt And Shame

Guilt and shame are two emotions that can cause suffering and stop you leading a full life. Both of these emotions are about not living up to values. These values can be your own or other peoples. Values are the kinds of experiences and behaviours that are important to both ourselves and to others.

If your behaviour or lack of it, in some way disrespects another persons values, you may well feel shame. Shame can also be imposed on you by another, such as by their public disapproval of your actions or even of you.

Guilt is about your response to how you are living up to and in accordance with your own values. How you behave or do not behave in relation to your own values can create the emotion we call guilt.

Both guilt and shame are emotions that are firmly located in the past. Guilt and shame are about past events and because there has been some perceived transgression of values, for some, those memories are replayed again and again and so can go on generate more guilt or shame.

Hypnotherapy and NLP can be very successfully used to stop most people feeling these negative emotions, for a specific event, in just one session. What is even more important to do after the feeling of guilt or shame is gone, is to re-evaluate the event and create strategies so that in any future situations that are similar, you will act much more in line with the values you want to honour.

It is said that one of Carl Jung’s patients, a hopeless alcoholic went to Jung for treatment. After one session all was going well and the addict recoverer for some few days. After yet another relapse the addict returned to Jung and said “I have relapsed and I need you to fix me“.

Jung’s response was excellent. “I can’t help you, you are the most sever alcoholic I have ever met and I can’t help you.

Gob smacked the alcoholic asked “Then what can I do? Is all hope lost?

Here is something you can try, it may save you or it may not. I can’t help you. The only thing that might help you is …” Jung paused, for effect …

This is called an olive branch. It requires both hope and action

… Is this. Go to all the Churches and Spiritual meetings you can until you find something that is bigger than you and that you honestly can relate to. I don’t know if you will ever find this, yet you can try.

The first steps of becoming free of an addiction is often to first realise then admit the problem of addiction. If it is not a problem then it is not a problem.

If it is a problem then … It Is a Problem.

It is very curious to know that many of the so called addictions are actually a coping mechanism for dealing with pain and the often relentless struggles in life. Perhaps a return to the simplicity of the womb and carefree state of bliss.

Addictions be they food related ( comfort eating ), drugs, sex, co-dependency or alcohol  are all related with a common them. What is this common theme? It is some perceived lack of something in life. And the ‘addiction’ is a mechanism ( that may well be past the sell by date ) that is functioning to fill what is missing in your life by numbing your pain or just as easily maintaining some kind of status quo.

It is often very difficult for the so called addict to admit to them self they have a problem, even more difficult to realise that in order to regain their life they need to do one of two things.

One. Seek professional help and or

Two. Seek something much more encompassing, bigger than them self to become free of that old addiction.

Surviving A Seriously Toxic Relationship – Part One

I honestly think people meet for a reason. My thoughts here are, it is to learn and create together or learn and create apart. Our relationships with our intimate lovers, friends and acquaintances can in some ways be defined by what we both learn and go on to accomplish, share and go on to help others through our own experiences.

If you have ever been in an unnecessarily argumentative, emotional, mentally or even physically abusive relationship that can be categorised with frequent breakups and passionate get back together’s then this may be of help and interest to you in both getting some kind of understanding of what’s happening and finding ways to live healthily together or move apart sooner.

It is my intention that these articles will provide examples you may relate to and to provide means to make the right changes for you in terms of your relationship.

If you choose to get out of this kind of toxic relationship the rest of this articles will offer some suggestions as to how as a survivor you can let go of the past, feel better and move forward with a sense of forgiveness and compassion. My reparation took me over six weeks to fully heal my heart and head, to let go of many unhelpful emotions and memories and feel whole again.

I most often find labelling people is not helpful. What I want to show here is a collection of coping mechanisms people with so called Borderline Personality Disorder ( BPD ) have for coping in their world and specifically coping in an intimate personal relationship.

It is honestly NOT their fault they have these modes of behaviour or coping mechanisms to be interacting with intimate partners but unless you are their therapist or their partner you will most likely never see this side of their personality. It can be like a real life Jekyll and Hyde. Relationships with this kind of characteristic can look like the Somme Battlefield from the outside. From the inside it is honestly much, much worse for both people.

How a Borderline Personality Disorder Love Relationship Evolves

The article above describes very well my perceptions of my own experience in a relationship with an ex partner who displayed all of the coping mechanisms that I will describe below. As such I have no intention of relating specific personal examples. This is for two reasons. Sometimes I feel ‘our story’ has an element of ‘the victim’ attached to it and so creates unhelpful gossip and agony aunt style, problem focused awareness and also this is really about recognising the signs and making a choice as to how best to move forward.

Having been in a toxic and mutually unhealthy relationship with a partner who exhibited these coping strategies for BPD with various intensities and frequencies; I have to say, at that time I simply didn’t understand what was happening or why they behaved that way. I did not understand many of our interaction. They often made little sense, more often than not no sense at all.

Arguments would frequently erupt from nowhere. My then partner would shout, make fists become verbally aggressive and abusive. In short a kind of totally unpredictable angry temper tantrum. Their raging arguments were paradoxical with what I perceived as frequent double standards that simply could not be reasoned out. I had no real idea how or why these would start arguments, but now I know, it is just one way of coping:

When you get to understand what childhood circumstances created these coping mechanisms or behavioural imprints ( DSM-IV-TR, The Angry Heart ) it is actually very easy to forgive and feel real compassion for an ex partner or even a current one; It is also very easy to forgive yourself. But when you don’t know, it is all too easy to feel hurt, used, manipulated, cheated and abused. This is the victim role. You can lose your sense of self value and self respect; Because you love them so you keep going back … for more of the same and so the cycle continues.

BPD Criteria and Coping Mechanisms

A pervasive pattern of instability of interpersonal relationships, self-image, and affects and markedly impulsivity beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts as indicated by five ( or more ) of the following :

1. Frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment.
2. A pattern of unstable and intense interpersonal relationships characterised by alternating between extremes of idealisation and devaluation.
3. Identity disturbance: markedly and persistently unstable self image or sense of self.
4. Impulsivity in at least two areas that are potentially self damaging ( spending, sex, substance abuse, reckless driving, binge eating).
5. Recurrent suicidal behaviours, gestures or threats of self-mutilating behaviour.
6. Affective instability due to a marked reactivity of mood ( intense episodic dysphoria, irritability, or anxiety usually lasting a few hours and only rarely more than a few days).
7. Chronic feelings of emptiness.
8. Inappropriate, intense anger or difficulty controlling anger ( frequent displays of temper, constant anger, recurrent physical fights ).
9. Transient, stress-related paranoid ideation or sever dissociative symptoms.

Part Three will offer suggestions and ways, that as a survivor of specifically this kind of toxic relationship you can heal your emotional past and then move forward in life with a genuine sense of forgiveness and compassion.

Can You Make A Living From Coaching or Therapy?

I run regular trainings in Newcastle for people to become certified Clinical Hypnotherapists and NLP Practitioners. Two days ago I received a call from a perspective participant regarding Hypnotherapy Training. One of their really good questions was “Can I make a living as a Hypnotherapist”.

The answer is a very BIG no and yes!

There are many, many training courses where you can become a qualified therapist, coach or hypnotherapist. Currently there is no legislation in the UK to stop anyone stating they are a ‘hypnotherapist’ or ‘coach’ any reader can do it right now. Some will get a ‘qualification’ yet if you want to make a good living as a professional people helper YOU NEED CLIENTS, no matter how good you think you are or the training you have received.

I strongly recommend Andy Austin’s Brass Bollocks [ if you will follow the process ] and then be prepared to commit to the time it takes to generate lots of clients AND build a reputation and successful practice!

A little humility will save you a lot of humiliation“.

There are so many products out in the market promising you can make £x,xxx,xxx in a year. This is a big sham! One of the biggest deceptions going in my opinion. There are no get rich quick schemes and if this is what you want you may well be in the wrong profession! Yet, the strategies are generally good BUT it takes time to build a good reputation, referrals and a professional practice.

My personal experience, never bothering to follow any of these get rich schemes was it took me five years to build a profitable practice in therapy. I am an ex-software engineer and have some savi regarding how to build an internet presence that works for you.

I was teaching hypnosis and NLP by 2005 and it is now 2011. This is five years in time and five years in reputations and referrals. Unless you have a massive number of contacts do not expect to make a living as soon as you are qualified. I think this applies to any professional practice, therapy or other …

One of the most important pieces of experience I can offer is you can do it. It usually wont happen over night. It takes practice, time and a real commitment to helping people transform their lives – as well as your own! If you are currently working I suggest you create what I call a ‘parachute fund’ to help you on your way, to transition between a job and a true calling. Don’t do what I did and sell your house to create you business, it is way too risky!

So, I sold my home and quite my job as a full time software developer and programmer to pursue my dream. I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone because it was very hard and was a one way ticket to survive and  flourish or go bust. I followed my dream …

Anything and everything to do what I love, my family and friends said I was mad to give up a lucrative job … YET … my heart was elsewhere in the future … and eventually … this came true … It was not easy! It is really hard work!!

Follow your heart … … … and at the same time, realise you do need to make a living in the process ….

Some hints and tips on what not to to … Basically don’t lie about yourself.

In therapeutic practice, there are so many people advertising skills they simply haven’t got.  For instance …

Do not advertise what you are not or make somewhat ridiculous claims on what you can do for clients. This includes ridiculous fees that simply do not attract clients.  The [ ] are examples of what I personally know has failed for certain people who try to present themselves as therapists or coaches.

  • £125 coaching by skype [ 4 clients in 18 months, two non paying ]
  • Child behaviour Specialist . [ Physically abusing their children by smacking then in the face and mouth ]
  • Saying you have 100% client success [ everyone knows this is not so ]
  • Divorced mother specialisation [ still married and ongoing incredibly troublesome divorce ]
  • Relationship expert [ 20 years of infidelity and non resolved personal issues ]
  • Get your magic job [ no income from therapy, dependent on the state for financial support ]
  • You can make a living doing what you love [ no income except state / partner dependent ]

Make you fees plainly accessible to one and all

The most well known and successful UK therapists are from £125 – per hour or session. These are the people who have 10 to 15 years plus of experience and practice to charge this. Get real. You will not compete with these people right away. These are well developed and recognised professionals. Better to charge £45 per hour and get some clients while building a real reputation.

The real trick here is to build up a practice

  • Don’t listen to anyone who tells you to up your prices especially when they have no clients of their own.
  • Get your Internet Site presence up and for the world to see.
  • Make presentations to your local therapy and counselling associations.
  • Do free work until you have people that will recommend you.
  • Be true to what you believe is right and set out to make a difference.
  • Patience and the rest will come with dedication.

The Brain Stuff

The brains main function is to keep the body in which it resides alive and functioning and to find food, reproduce and other vital requirements. It does this by a complex neuro-chemical endogenous reward mechanism. Simply put, finding food, sex and the other essential needs creates a neuro-chemical reward and makes us feel very good. If you continue looking outside yourself for this you always will …

This system of reward is driven sequentially like this:

Stimulus -> Desire -> Action -> Reward

Let’s call this the SDAR cycle.

Stimulus to find food, sex, or other essential need like security. This can come from your environment, like seeing some favourite food, your partner or even looking for a more comfortable or secure living environment. Stimulus can also come from the inside as in when we think about our emotional state, think about problems or think about a missing loved one.

Desire is thinking about what you want and also what is painful in life. When the pain or emotional turbulence becomes too strong you seek to find a way out. One way is finding something to alleviate the pain, this is temporary and may be eating a cake, chocolate or any activity that temporarily shunts negative thoughts, pain or emotional issues off to one side. But they are still there!!

Action in this case, is putting the next best alternative into action. Usually a stop gap measure. This is doing what you have always done and hoping for a different result. It wont happen, sorry. You need to change what you do. And this means a fundamental change in your attitude towards yourself!

Reward is the feeling you get when you do something to alleviate your emotional pain. Your brain releases some good chemicals and you feel good for a short while but it doesn’t last and then the cycle starts again.

  • What if you can stop this cycle?
  • What if you can honestly heal the emotional pain that is at the heart of your situation?
  • What if you really can make and sustain positive changes that will give you the life and feelings you really what to have?

Comfort eating, drinking or any other activity that temporarily assuages the underlying emotional hurt or pain you are feeling and is a substitute for addressing your real needs and desires. You can honestly never get enough of second best! So now is your open window to let some fresh air of change into you life.

Buddhism, Enlightenment and Learning How To Feel Better – Part Three

Carrying on from the previous post about NLP and the connections to Buddhism or more precisely one of many ways towards what is tentatively called enlightenment or as I prefer to say living in and having as authentic a life as possible and being comfortable in your own skin …

So, having read the last post and having acknowledged the positive purpose of the unwanted emotion, we can then use one of many NLP therapeutic processes to help heal the regrets of the past.

One of the simplest methods of doing this is to change, what is know as the sub-modalities of the ‘memory’. Our memories are re-experienced through our five senses and the sub modalities are the smaller components of each of our five senses.

Here is one way for you to heal your own regret. Work on one specific ‘regret memory’ at a time and follow the process all the way through.

  1. Remember a situation or memory that at one time you did regret but now, when you think about it you realize and acknowledge the learning and the value of that learning such that having had that experience has in fact made you a much better, more rounded person with far greater resources and skills. Let’s call this the ‘reference memory’.
  2. Still thinking about the memory you, at one time regretted, but now see this as a resource; answer the following questions, making a list of your answers.
    • Where is the memory located? Point to it! Is it up to your left, down to your right, is it central in front of you, is it behind you to the right? You need to find the spatial location. Find out where abouts in your own personal space the memory seems to be.
    • Is the memory colour or black and white?
    • Is the memory like a picture, series of pictures or a DVD movie?
    • Is the memory life size, smaller or bigger?
    • Do you see yourself in the memory or is it like you are looking out of your own eyes?
    • What sounds accompany the memory and what is their location? There may be many or none!
    • What smells are you aware of that accompany this memory?
    • Is the memory sharp and clear or fuzzy and blurred?
  3. Write all your answers down and then go and make a cup of tea and come back in a few minutes.
  4. Now think about the specific situation, memory or incident you do still regret and answer the following questions, make a list of:
    • Where is the memory located? Point to it! Is it up to your left, down to your right, is it central in front of you, is it behind you to the right? You need to find the spatial location. Find out where abouts in your own personal space the memory seems to be.
    • Is the memory color or black and white?
    • Is the memory like a picture, series of pictures or a DVD movie?

    • Do you see yourself in the memory or is it like you are looking out of your own eyes?

  5. You now have two lists of the sub modalities of each memory. Here is how to run your own brain. Look for the differences between the two experiences, for example are the two memories in different locations? Is one color and one black and white? You get the idea right! Differences here are the important factors!
  6. Start to make the sub modalities ( one at a time ) of the ‘regret’ memory the same as the ‘reference memory’ you used to regret and notice how your emotional response changes. It is your brain you can make any changes you want to make. Changes can be changed back or kept depending on how you feel.

Now maybe Buddha did not use this specific NLP process ( there are rather a lot to select from ) as he took many days to achieve his enlightenment and this can change how you feel much more rapidly. In a matter of minutes, you can have really practised this skill more fully. But perhaps Buddha had, like the rest of us, a great many regrets so he worked through them all, systematically, one at a time. NLP like Buddhism is about continued practice so please accept the invite to change, one at a time, the things you regret.

NLP is about learning how to run your own brain to get the kind of results you want in a systematic way.

One of the things that make the Clean Therapy ™ approach so powerful is clients never have to talk directly about their problems, which can often cause them even more distress. Using metaphor and physical movement the Clean Therapist directs the process of change at a different level of internal experience that the origional problem. That is, a metaphoric representation is created and then explored. As the metaphor is explored and changed the problem representation will naturally have been explored and changed too.

Change Your Mind – Change Your Feelings

Albert Einstein is said to have commented “Problems cannot be solved by the same level of thinking that created them!”

Here we use a metaphor to represent the problem state and the metaphor IS a different level of thinking!

This is a really neat process to help people move from unresourceful states to really positive and resourceful ones. Using emergent metaphor to change the internal representations or problem states as a 2nd order change process.

The process is created by Kevin Creedon and know as the Cloud Process.

Drinking Water Before Meal Helps Dieting

A recent BBC article claims that drinking two cups of water before a meal will help you with your dieting. The research comes from scientists in Virginia working with 48 adults aged 55 to 75.

Drinking two cups of water, three times a day before meals can help you lose an average of 5 pounds ( That is the same as 2.27 kg ).

Even The Top Coaches Have Bad Days

All people have off days. Life will continue to throw up circumstances, situations and episodes when we are challenged, hurt, pissed off and injured by our own and other peoples actions or inactions. This is part of being human and the personal evolutions we all experience during our life time.

Forgive yourself ( and others ) for any pain you feel. Use the pain to transform and motivate yourself to have much more of the life you want. This is not really about material things as I know many people who have excess money, even one who is a millionaire and they aren’t happy.

This is about connecting and discovering your unique life purpose or your true calling and acting from this base. Of course having too little money does cause problems no matter what some life coaches or spiritual gurus say. We all require a certain level of income to meet our basic need. Yet once these needs are met how do you choose to live?

One of comparative mythologists Joseph Campbell’s most famous quotes is “follow your bliss“. The real key to a more than fulfilling life is to discover your bliss and walk that path. Campbell certainly followed his bliss and as a result transformed the thinking and lives of millions of people. And of course you don’t even need to think about the ideas and concepts of following your bliss or discovering your life purpose. It is not for every one yet discovering your bliss requires no special education or prior knowledge. He calls this journey or exploration The Hero’s Journey’ Campbell says this is The Left hand Path and it is not for everyone. Just for those who hear the call to adventure …

So it’s OK to feel hurt, pained and angry. This could be the start of a life transforming journey. Where the real skill comes in is using these powerful and driving emotions to create something better for ourselves and others. This could be the beginning of your own Hero’s Journey. Not every reader will be aware of the fact that many of the people who are developing and exploring their own spirituality, interestingly enough, will have something in common with people who are studying NLP or Hypnosis in Newcastle and the North East.

Now these connections may not be immediately obvious, so here is an invitation for you to look at some parallel lines of exploration.

In relating the science of Hypnosis and NLP to the spirituality of Buddhism there are some very clear connections in terms of outcomes or to put it another way, what students from either of these discipline’s can anticipate from their efforts and studies because …

Both Buddhism, Hypnotherapy and NLP at the higher level are concerned with moving towards true personal freedom, compassion and living your own life. Ultimately it is about being able to feel how you want to feel much more of the time and engage in what is truly important to you and satisfy your own values.

So to draw the first parallel let’s again recount the first temptation of the Buddha by the demon Kama, the Buddhas ‘solution’ to this problem and then see how you can do this from an NLP or Hypnosis perspective.

Kama sends by proxy his three daughters Regret ( past), Fulfillment ( present ) and Desire ( future ). Buddha being, still on his immovable spot, disengaged from the field of time, he is able to refute all three emotions and be free from desire, regret and fulfillment.

All very well for Buddha to deal with these emotions but the question many people will be asking is “how do I deal with these emotions?

Let’s explore regret. Regret is specifically about the past. Regret is a reviewing and reliving of past memories and for whatever reasons ( the list could be very long ) ruing the things that either were or were not done. Often times this in not even a choice to relive the memory it just seems to run and re-run all by itself. The brain just seems to do what it wants and not what you want.

Now, what if, like Buddha, you could change your past memories, here specifically regret, such that all the learning’s and education are preserved yet they have a completely neutral or even oddly pleasurable emotional response to the ‘same’ memory?

Looking through the therapeutic lens of applied Hypnotherapy and NLP, regret is an indication that some value, some behavior or experience that is especially important to you was in some way transgressed. This applies irrespective weather the regret is about something that did happen ( and wish it hadn’t ) or something that did not happen ( and wish it had ).

You know, we learn by making ‘mistakes’ so being able to keep the learning and dissolved any unwanted emotion is what this is about.

First and foremost and often the hardest step for people is to acknowledge that the feeling of regret is serving some very positive purpose. This feeling of regret can act like a ‘flag’ or ‘marker’ so that in any similar future situations, you will act differently and in ways that will respect and support the transgressed value.

The third article of this series will give a simple step by step process of how you can change the way you think about regret and start to run your own brain for a change.

Movie super star Mel Gibson has recently had a mammoth 10 day hypnotherapy session to help him cope with all of the stress in his life.

Stress can be defined like this: All people have an ability to cope and thrive in a natural environment with natural pressures. When a persons ability to cope with natural pressure is exceeded, then there is an excess of pressure, this excess pressure, the excess an individual really can’t cope with is called stress.

Hypnosis can be used very effectively as a therapy for anything that is the human condition, to change behaviour and habits – and also for self improvement.
