How you describe depression could be either crushing or empowering. Depression is generally described as a feeling of intense sadness but if you only had two words to describe how you feel, lets say sad or happy, that would be very limiting in your own healing and well being.
Lisa Barrett calls this a lack of emotional granularity. How many emotions would fit in between happy and sad? That number of additional distinctions could have a really positive effect for you. How you describe your feelings in some sense is limited by the words you use. And as such your words can affect your feelings.
This idea is similar to the colours in a rainbow. Commonly there are seven but if you think about this there are no distinct or discrete colour. Those colour divisions are completely constructed and as such give rise to our seven colours.
If you were to re-imagine our standard names for colours to blue and not blue, it might surprise you that although we would ‘see’ our normal spectrum our words in this case would describe everything not blue as ‘not blue’. This would linguistically create a massively impoverished description. Its straight forward, how you think effects how you feel.
No one who understands depression believes this to be a disease purely of the imagination, depression is recognised as an organic, physical and psychological problem. Psychologically emotions and thoughts that are about loss, guilt, pain, anxiety to name a few are inter-connected with stress hormones and certain neurotransmitters in the dance of depression.
Your thoughts effect how you feel and your feelings effect your thoughts and your thinking. It is well know that thinking alone can create brain change and that is change at the organic level. This can be both a blessing and a curse.
On the positive side, one neuroscientist, Alvaro Pascual-Leone, had people practice – in their imagination – that is without moving their hands, playing the piano. After one week of practice, two hours a day they could play a simple tune. Their brains has changed organically, just by using their imagination.
If you could for a moment act as if ‘depression’ is not an emotion or a feeling but that depression is a blanket name term used to describe a huge range of thoughts, emotions and even behaviours. It’s like ‘not blue’ to describe a huge spectrum of colour that isn’t blue. You are changing how you think and potentially how you will feel.
You can step out of the slavery of the label of ‘depression’ into describing what emotions and sensations you are feeling and experiencing. If you ban the word ‘depression’ from your vocabulary you are already enabling yourself to well being.

If you are reading this I will guess that you are. But that one word is not enough, even simplifies the mass of feelings, thoughts and emotions you are experiencing right now. It discounts every, even, slightly positive experience you have. That word is like a brand and on the whole its not helpful.
Depression or reactive depression is a perfectly normal human response to loss. Low moods and negative thoughts for some time then recovery. A clinical depression is much worse in that recovery seems to be missing or taking much longer to heal and get back to living life.

A startling statistic is that in all but the very worst cases, placebo tablets are just as effective. Just the belief – your belief – in healing and well being can change how you feel.
It is worrying to find that in one study, twenty three percent of patients over a seventeen year period were prescribed anti-depressants. In 2016 there were 64.7 million prescriptions of anti depressants in the UK. And this was not just for depression. Is there something fundamentally wrong with our culture in that there is a ridiculously high number of anti depressant prescriptions?
Anti depressant drugs can literally be a miracle cure when you are depressed so I am certainly not against their judicious use. Drugs are designed to treat symptoms but not the various causes and factors that create those symptoms.

You don’t even need to believe it, but it will help. Imagine from a time in the future looking back how you made a full return to feeling good, OK, fine in your life and relationships. Practice this as often as you can. This is not about affirmations, this is about hypnotising, imagining yourself back into good health.
