Everybody knows what a lemon looks like right? Now as you read on, imagine you have a lemon in one of your hands. Feel the weight and look at the imaginary lemon in your hand. Notice the colour and the texture of the skin.
Continue imagining the lemon in your hand and as you do, imagine cutting a thin slice out and from the lemon and recall the smell as you cut into it. The lemon scent that you are so familiar with. Now, imagine looking at that slice and see the light on the cut segment as you see the juice on the skin and smell that juicy lemon scent.
Now put that lemon slice in your mouth, noticing the texture and bite down on the juicy lemon slice. Feel the juice squirt in your mouth as you really taste the lemon.
Right now, even if you just read the words, more so if you engaged in the process, you are salivating having a physical reaction. Depending if you like lemon or not your face is a little contorted with the imagined taste or maybe you are enjoying the refreshing experience.
Whatever is happening with your face and body, you are responding to an experience that is totally created in your imagination. Another experience totally manufactured in your imagination is anxiety.
Anyone who can make themselves anxious by worry is very good at self hypnosis because you do this to yourself with your thoughts. It’s not a particularly productive or massively useful application of self hypnosis yet that is what it is.
Hypnotherapy and Anxiety
Now the application of Hexham or Newcastle hypnotherapy for anxiety can take a variety of different approaches which will be specific to both how and the type of anxiety my client displays.
Hypnotherapy can address specific problems that a great deal of conscious effort, tapping and not actually dealing with the cause will usually fail to make long lasting positive impact with.
One very important factor is DO NOT expect a miracle effortless one session cure because the anxious person will only worry it WILL NOT WORK and after all how many people do we know that has either been struck by lightning or a meteor? That is unlikely to happen, as are most things people worry about.
Anxiety is predominantly about imagined events and scenarios from a future that may or may not happen. Anxiety is an unchecked worry machine that is focused on a future you don’t want.
Most of us really don’t know about the structure of our thoughts, the types of thought that generate anxiety.
Even less of us have been taught to understand how we think and that by knowing how we think we are so much more able to positively alter the negative thought patterns that produce anxiety.
How Is Anxiety Caused?
The vast majority of anxiety is caused by an making negative internal pictures about the future and an internal voice that asks the ‘What if? and ‘As if?’ questions that will have a tendency to be biased towards negative situations.
Anxiety is related to a perceived lack of control about the environment situations in the future as well as a certain predilection to think about bad or negative outcomes.
As an example let’s say you have to do a presentation to a group of people.
An anxious persons response may be immediately imagine the group laughing at them because they have started blushing, turned red and choked up. And remembering the lemon started feeling bad.
A non-anxious, someone else, may have thought “A presentation about what?”
Another hugely important factor is where the sufferer of anxiety has the majority of their attention. To worry and think the negative things there has to be a of lack of focus of attention in the outside world and a greater focus of attention within the mind.
Have you ever been worrying enough ( inside your own worry machine, listening to all the what ifs ) that you have completely failed to hear what someone else is saying to you? It’s not that uncommon.
Now what is important ( remember the lemon? ) is that you weren’t born anxious it is a way you have learned to think. Like most thinking patterns it is done mostly without much conscious thought. The good news is you can learn new ways in thinking, ones that offer you more control in how you think.
You can learn new ways of directing your attention so you can be more present in your relationships and ideally start to work to retrain your thoughts and thinking.
How Many Sessions?
How long have you had anxiety for? I don’t think it should take as long to cure anxiety as you’ve had it for though it will take a reasonable amount of time and more so some effort on your behalf. If you are willing to put effort into your freedom, the release from anxiety because you want to make real positive changes in your life, you can.
An anxious thought pattern may well be “What if I have a session and it doesn’t work?” You are worrying about finances and about your own outcomes and already building a negative anticipation. Don’t worry we will talk this through during our telephone consultation.
A different and more enabling thought pattern is this “Let’s find out what can be done and what my role will be in turning my anxious thoughts off or to a minimum and what role will Nigel have as therapist and coach.”
