Newcastle Hypnotherapy – Public Speaking

Hypnotherapy Newcastle for Public Speaking fears, worries and unavoidable panics. People worry about lots of aspects regarding speaking in public, addressing an audience and not appearing as a shaking, stuttering wreak. Lost nights of sleep leading up to an event and excessive planning.

The fear of public speaking is as common as muck. It has plagued and will plague countless people causing worry, anxiety and the shrinking violet sensation of wishing to be anywhere, anywhere other than doing that public speech.

Hypnotherapy Newcastle

If you have had them, you know from experience the kinds of worries, fears and often absolute dread the knowledge of having to make a public speech can have on people. People like you, who are faced with nameless terrors about how badly it could be to fuck up really, really badly making an absolute ass of yourself by going to pieces and getting it all wrong in that crucial public speaking engagement.

Thing is, now, probably more than every before, we are called upon or need to make public speeches in our business, social or personal enterprises. That is the way of it today, so, what can you do to become more at ease and composed to make a great impression? Please read on to see how hypnotherapy Newcastle can help you deliver a great speech and stay focused on what is really important.

Psychology of Public Speaking Problems

Have you ever talked with a really negative, depressing type of person? Have you noticed how they seem to expect the worst, are caught up in problems and not much fun to be around? Well if you are worrying, fretting about Public Speaking performance you are probably doing the exact same but you are talking to yourself.

A very common aspect of anxiety is the use of self talk to generate problem focused scenarios that have the power to cause anxiety, worry and the physical conditions of a stress response. “What if …” is by far the most common way people make themselves anxious. Here are some examples.

  • “What if I forget what I am supposed to say?”
  • “What if I make a fool of myself?”
  • “What if I shake and sweat?”
  • “What if I can’t answer questions?”
  • “What if I blush and faint?”

All of these are pretty common ways people make themselves more anxious about Public Speaking. If you think about it, these questions are a form of unhelpful self hypnosis that negatively affect a persons state. But it’s not just the words!

The tonality and speed of how we talk to other people can change the meaning of the words. So if a person talks to themselves in a fast and ‘worrying’ tone it will have more of a negative impact. And there is more though! These ‘what ifs’ lead to further unanswered questions for instance;

“What if I forget what I am supposed to say?” implies that something will happen as a consequence, of course it would. It could lead to huge embarrassment and humiliation, it could lead to not being asked to present that important presentation again and not being invited for a pay rise, promotion and extra bonus, it could lead to reassignment to Sunderland.

You are creating a very large and negative self fulfilling prophesy because you have been rehearsing what could go wrong.

Physiology of Public Speaking Problems

You are activating your stress response. This is indicative of hight sympathetic nervous system arousal so there is plenty of adrenaline and noradrenaline  in your system. You heart is probably beating faster, your systolic and diastolic blood pressure has increased, your mouth is dry and there are probably knots in your stomach.  You are probably not having what is called a good time.

Meanwhile, your brain is analysing your body responses, making meaning of the various aspects of the unwanted stress response and coming to the conclusion that your body is not having a good time and this really does influence your mood and adds to the anxiety you are experiencing. Its a vicious circle.

So about now all of those imagined fears are probably to make a physical manifestation. You feel you are starting to visibly shake, all of those ‘worst case scenarios’ have their opportunities to be enacted, blushing, word amnesia to name just a few. Your breathing is likely a bit too fast and high in your chest so both literally and metaphorically you are unbalanced and off centre.

Three Things Really Good Presenters Know

There are three aspects to doing a great presentation that you can learn ( through practice ) to do in order to dramatically improve your performance when engaging in Public Speaking. There are more than three but these three are big ones!

  • Stay Relaxed in the body. Avoid unnecessary tension and stay relaxed.
  • Use your peripheral vision. Avoid focusing myopically on anyone or anything and stay peripherally open.
  • Quiet on the inside. Avoid talking to yourself ( on the inside ) as this splits your attention. Learn through experience to flow!

Hypnotherapy for Public Speaking Fears

Public speaking is a very, very common fear. It could be a cultural, British thing and also likely a combination of perceived ‘high stakes’ and lack of experience of speaking to groups and large gatherings. In short it is perfectly normal!

Hypnotherapy Newcastle can help you to learn how to manage and change your fears into ways to start to rehearse how you actually want your performance to be. After all it makes much more sense to plan for success that failure. Also we will be using hypnosis to help you feel much more comfortable, so ideally you can enjoy the whole experience and keep your attention focused on your audience.

Some methods that are not used at Newcastle hypnotherapy are visualising the audience naked. This is a pretty old and I think a really odd idea. If I walked into a group for a speaking engagement and the audience were naked I would leave, not the kind of group I would want to talk with. This kind of technique probably says a lot more about the therapist and their ways of ( not ) thinking.

Other methods that will not be used are the arrogance based ones. These include, but are not limited to having mantras like “fuck the audience, I am in charge here”, “these people are mine” and talking over the top of any peoples questions. I found these uncharming techniques from people who have seen other hypnotherapists before they found me.

Hypnotherapy Newcastle Weight Loss

Newcastle hypnotherapy for help and assistance in weight loss and more importantly keeping the weight off.  The UK is fastest becoming one of the fattest peoples in the world, this is not a good thing at all. Why is this?

Because being overweight is just one contributing factor to what the World Health Organisation describe and predict is going to be the leading health issue, leading to premature death and potentially nasty complication on the way – Metabolic Syndrome or Syndrome X. You could look and feel better slimmer.

Hypnotherapy Newcastle

Most if not all of us eat junk from time to time. We eat at restaurants or have regular habits of eating quick, fast foods. But did you know that you make your habits real. Do you know what eating just one, just one, bag of crisps every day for a year adds up to?

Over one year if you eat just one little bag of crisps each day you are consuming about FIVE litres of fat per year. Little adds up over a long time.  Change a little habit and, over time, the results add up to a slimmer you.

Hypnotherapy Newcastle can assist you in changing your attitude to emotional eating and discovering how you can change your your attitude to using food in relationship to becoming the weight and shape you want to be, Please read on …

Nuts and Bolts What is Overweight Anyway? Overweight, poor diet and lack of exercise together are a leading cause of heart disease. As we, as a species, in the Western world, are tending to live longer, the natural termination of life is more like a gradual falling apart. By taking care of your body in healthy ways it may well be possible to live longer and live longer healthier.

Have a diet of ready meals, live a stressful life, do little exercise and chances may be you are asking for trouble.  Weight loss hypnotherapy is honestly not the quick effortless fix some people expect. The same way some people control their diabetes with drugs and continue eating with porcine abandon.

Hypnotherapy Newcastle for weight loss and more importantly staying healthy is more interested in helping you change your attitude to both eating and your body with long term health as a main agenda. The focus is changing your attitude to respect yourself better. Overeating is a learned habit, usually over many years and is about changing habits based in future focused positive change.

When we eat at regular meal times, snack times we are teaching our body to have some very specific biological responses related to food consumption and fat storage. Say you eat every day at 6pm. At about quarter to six, based on histological habits, your body will produce insulin. Insulin is the hormone that is responsible for fat storage. You happy pancreas at this time, before meals will secrete a hormone that is telling you body to get ready to store fat.

Fat is stored in fat cells, in muscles and in the liver. Over eat, put too much in the proverbial biological fuel tank and you store fat. Eat too much and the body does excess storage which is easily seen in being over weight and, well fat. As we move about, think and do activities through our daily life we require energy.

Our bodies convert fat into energy. The trick is really about getting a balance in what we intake and what we use. Too much in and too little activity usually equals being overweight.

Your Heart Is Like A Pump

When you have excess fat circulating in your body your blood is in essence thicker. Blood can thicken during stressful responses, after meals or because there is too much bad cholesterol in your system.  Claggy, thicker blood puts more stress on the pump, your heart, increasing systolic and diastolic pressure, possibility causing damage to your blood vessels and atherosclerosis.

Cholesterol : The Good, The Bad and Nothing To Do With Looks

There are two types of cholesterol the so called good and bad types. High density lipoprotein associated cholesterol ( HDL ) and low density lipoprotein associated cholesterol ( LDL ) respectively. Atherosclerosis plaque is caused mainly with LDL where the HDL cholesterol is the type that has been removed from plaques and is going to your liver. Too little HDL and lots of LDL is bad news. Stress increases LDL so learn to relax more because it could make you live longer!

Why People Eat To Excess

Couple of reasons. One food tastes really good! We love sugar and fudge and cake and all that high energy stuff. The other reason is habit. Habit can be in the form of little nibbles to alleviate stress, give us a little hit of energy or even boredom! Habits work like this in neurological terms.

We have the desire to eat, perhaps a crisp or a biscuit, and we have a little surge of dopamine. Dopamine is the motivating neurotransmitter. Then we do a behaviour, in this case eating, and we have the sense of reward. It all makes perfect sense because it tastes good or stops us being board or gives us that little boost of energy we ‘want’.

What is not being addressed right at the time ( or actually just before ) of eating extras is the bigger picture. The bigger picture is you want or need to lose weight. Well that is only a bit of the bigger picture in reality. Sure people want to lose weight but that is not the real outcome at all. The real outcome is what losing weight will get you, will do for you and what this is leading too. It is not about losing weight!

Metabolic Syndrome

Syndrome X (read about and scare yourself here ) is a potentially disastrous meeting of things that can ‘go wrong’ in a human body. A collection of way too much sugary and fatty foods contributing to thick circulating blood. A lack of exercise that leads to the sedentary life style; building up more and more fatty deposits. Excess psychological stress, releasing stress hormones in a not good way. All putting an abnormal load on the old ticker and potentially leading to diabetes, hight blood pressure, heat disease and checking out way too early.

Hypnotherapy Newcastle

Honest and Ethical Hypnotherapy in Newcastle

In the last week I was contacted by a potential client who needed help in overcoming and addiction. A great question they asked was “Is this Guaranteed to work?” – “Absolutely not” I replied. They went on to tell me that they has either seen or been told by a local hypnotherapist in Newcastle that any work they did together was indeed guaranteed. This perspective client went on to say they were glad I didn’t guarantee success as this sounded ridiculous.

Apart from being in breach of no small few marketing laws, of most hypnotherapy codes of professional conduce, it is plainly UNTRUE. No Newcastle hypnotherapist, counsellor, coach psychotherapist or change worker can GUARANTEE success. It should be obvious why.

5 Reasons Why Hypnotherapist’s Should Not Guarantee Success

  1. They can not tell the future.
  2. It is completely unethical.
  3. It will place unrealistic expectations on the therapist.
  4. Clients may feel they have no work to do themselves.
  5. It will disempower clients in their own abilities.

Addictions and Habits

Most problematic addictions do not start out that way. Drug taking, Alcohol, Emotional Shopping practically always start out as pleasurable and fun! Problems arise over time when the fun and enjoyment start to drift out and the person, you? Need to have more a a drug, more shopping, more ever increasing [ insert addiction here ] to get the same feeling of pleasure that is shorter and shorter lived.

As addictions form in a neurobiological sense, neural networks for a specific addiction become stronger. This is like a well work path in a forest. The more the path is used the more known, familiar and easy it is to use. As this happens a transcription factor called DeltaFosB is deposited in various places in the brain which makes behaviours become more locked in and rewarding.

All addictive behaviours have several components in common. The mezolimbic pathway consisting of the ventral tegmental area and nucleus accumbens also known as the reward path. This is primarily a dopamine pathway and dopamine is all about reward. Cocaine feels so good because it delivers many hundreds of times more dopamine that is naturally available.

All of this is not good news because ( if you are an addict you know this ) it makes it difficult to change because there are both psychological and physiological aspects which can keep addicts addicts for a long time.

How Hypnotherapy in Newcastle Could Help

Hypnotherapy is a well known way to make psychological changes that relate to behaviours, desires and motivations. No one really knows why hypnotherapy works yet practically everyone has experience hypnosis in everyday life.

Who hasn’t misplaced their keys, a watch or purse, searched everywhere twice and eventually sees them there on that table there right in plain site.  Hypnosis is a process of communicating ideas and of changing perceptions. Most people have had the experience of knocking, cutting or bumping themselves but not been aware of any pain or discomfort because something else was more pressingly important.

Creating a professional relationship together, I will work with you ( not for you – because breaking an addiction usually requires effort from you! ) to help you make the necessary changes in your way to freedom from an addiction. This means following on from our session together you will provide updates of your progress and agreed tasks. We work together to change certain perceptions and realities that support your outcomes.

Bereavement Hypnotherapy Newcastle

Hypnotherapy Newcastle for help with bereavement and coming to terms with the deep loss and forward with hope to continue living with acceptance and gratitude to have known those who have touched us so deeply.

Bereavement is a fact of life, there can, if we think about it, be no life without death. Death and life co-define each other. We all know this yet loosing a loved one can be one of the testing times in a persons life. Hypnotherapy Newcastle can help you move forward and be living again.

Hypnotherapy Newcastle Bereavement

Bereavement or loss comes in many forms. One of the most unexpected and difficult to deal with is the loss of a child to a parent. This really is not in the natural order of things we all know and try to accept.

A Brief Case Study – Hypnotherapy Bereavement

A few years ago I was contacted by a man who had lost his daughter just over twenty years ago. He has reported he has seen counsellors and some therapists over this period and was still deeply grieving. Talking with him he really was.

This person was deeply religious and I really don’t think any of his previous ‘helpers’ had discussed his beliefs about death and the relationships between his beliefs, his daughter death and grief, perhaps it was too painful for them?

His grief was resolved in around two hours ( which is very short and remarkable ) and I saw his wife for two sessions, using a very different approach. They both reported having come to terms and being at peace.

Bereavement and Grieving Properly

It is very important to grieve properly. This does actually take some time and the very well known Kubler Ross sequence can be extremely, cognitively, helpful for a grieving person to walk through what are very normal stages of grieving and return to living. When grieving last too long it is time to seek professional and compassionate help to move forwards.

Kubler Ross Scale is in five stages which do not have to happen in this order and can have stages missed entirely. use it as a guide.

  1. Denial
  2. Anger
  3. Bargaining
  4. Depression
  5. Acceptance

I have a very good friend who is a practising Buddhist who parents died. As far as I could tell he was accepting very quickly. He loved his parents dearly yet through his training was able to accept this as a natural order of life. This is not so easily accomplished for most people.

For people who are presented with the knowledge a loved one will die before them, there is an almost incredible and usually transformational opportunity to say all of the things and do what they can together before one of then leaves this world. Pre-Grieving is a very useful and purposeful service I offer.

Pre-grieving softens the blow that we know will come and offers a compassionate and open space to prepare for one of the most impacting and transformations aspects we as living, human being will ever experience in this life time.

Hypnotherapy Newcastle Bereavement

When we have no opportunity to pre grieve and we are mourn the loss of a loved one, you really will either move on or you wont. When you can’t move on and the loss is too great this was called melancholia by Freud. Freud can often have a lot of not so positive press, partially because some of his ideas have been outdated or really upgraded. Melancholia is one thing he got right.

During a lifetime or a long time of relationship with a loved one, there will almost certainly be times where we have been experiencing a huge range of emotions with our lost love. These will be but are not limited to, love, laughter, happiness, anger, disappointment, sadness …

Grieving tends to focus on the psychological aspects of the relationship we are missing. This form of attachment is perfectly normal and usual. What is often forgotten are the harder or trickier times where the relationship was not perfect, not ideal and honestly, problematic. By re-accessing the good and the bad times it can become easier to experience the whole of the person that is gone.

By psychologically moving away from just the loss, to the the whole experiences it often, but not always, becomes a transformational experience of serious appreciations of and in life. For no matter where you have sat in the performance, it really is the greatest shown on this earth.
