A Bout Of Anxiety
The body’s stress response is activated. Depending on the intensity of the response the terms may be deemed Anxious Arousal ( high ) or Anxious Apprehension ( less ). It is still the same body response.
Positive body stress is actually quite good, this is called stimulation. This is like going for a run, moderate exercise or some other positive activity.
A negative, and usually unwarranted stressor has all the same hall mark plus some metabolic activation of the Amygdala. This is a key neuro-biological difference.
In a fear or anxiety response there are, in a simplistic way, four nuclei in the brain activated. These lead to pretty much the same body responses hormonally.
ANXIETY – FEAR – STRESS
There are four brain areas activated.
- Frontal Cortex
- Reticular Formation
Not surprisingly the hippocampus ( involved with memory ) is active. This means we are learning to be afraid or learning to be anxious.
The amygdala is all about fear, sexual behaviour in males and is a biological learning component of fear. This little bugger responds well to stress hormones and at the same time, kind of, overrides the normal hippocampus conscious learning function.
The reticular formation is a rhombencephalon, reptile brain nuculii that has a great deal to do with attention and in this instance, the blue spot ( locus coeruleus ) thrives on noradrelanine, a neuro transmitter involved in the stress response.
All of this is a scientific and neuro biological explanation of what is happening at a very small level of detail. Knowing all of this really wont stop anxiety, it is what we can do with this knowledge that can make a difference. A real difference!
