Phobia Hypnotherapy Newcastle – Nigel Hetherington

Hypnotherapy can help you become free of phobic responses that can leave a person a shaking wreck, incapacitated and having a full on major stress response. A phobia is not a fear, a phobia is classified as an anxiety disorder.

We are using hypnotherapy here to unlearn an out of proportion response to some stimulus. So if the phobia is of spiders, we are using hypnotherapy to unlearn the particular response to spiders and to have a different, more mediated response to spider stimulus. Phobia have very specific triggers.

Phobia Hypnotherapy Newcastle

Nobody is born with phobic responses – they are learned. While there seems to be a body of evidence that suggest some inbuilt fears of snakes, spiders and heights there is no evidence that any of these makes us genuinely phobic of them.

A phobic response will be ‘learned’ in a very stressful or terrifying situation. Assume there is or there feels like a life or death situation. The sympathetic nervous system will be releasing noradrelanin, the endocrine system will be releasing stress hormones. Our body is completely geared up to make a survival attempt.

Our amygdala’s will be massively activated and our memory of this situation or it’s moments will be being formed. Formed because should we survive this situation then it will make perfect sense that should a similar situation ever occur we have a memory template to save our skins again.

When we are responding to a gigantic life or death type stressor ( or the sense of extreme fear or terror ) the hippocampus becomes less affective at storing our memories and the role to some extent is mediated by the amygdala. It is the amygdala that plays a crucial role in a phobic response as part of the unconscious limbic system response.

Neil Slade talks about clicking or tickling the amygdala to pacify an over active amygdala to reduce anxiety, fear or any unwanted unconscious activation. This could be thought of a mindfulness activity. The accent is having an pretty much unconscious and unwanted nervous system response stop.

Hypnotherapy can be used to re-educate a particular,in this case phobic, response to a stimulus that most likely poses no danger at all. Nobody knows how hypnosis works quickly to remove a phobia. What is evidenced is that an unconscious process can be changed using hypnotherapy.

Phobia or Fear?

Many people describe a fear or an apprehension as a phobia. These are really very different things.  Being apprehensive is a little wary and courage can usually overcome fear. A phobic response will leave a person incapacitated, flooded with adrenaline, paralysed with fear or running away hell for leather.

Hypnotherapy Jesmond and Newcastle can help you overcome phobias, fears and social apprehensions. Nigel works from Jesmond Therapy Centre, 7 Holly Avenue West easy accessible hypnotherapy North Shields, Durham and Sunderland. Call Nigel on 0770 481 8467 for help with phobia.

Hypnotherapy Trauma & PTSD – Nigel Hetherington Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is an affective way to deal with psychological and emotional trauma. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder ( PTSD ) and Traumatic memories leave survivors with scars, that live on in forever reoccurring states of severe distress when the actual danger is long passed, never quite heal.

Trauma is defined here as the result of a massively emotional and or physical situation where a person has survived but is still from time to time experiencing the negative real-time emotional responses that are debilitating, hugely stress inducing and crippling to every day life.

NLP Eye Movement Integration For Therapists Training – FREE

NLP Eye Movement Integration Plus is freely available for all therapists and change workers to have the DVD of a two day training in using EMIPlus in treating Trauma and PTSD and many anxiety disorders. Go to www.emiplus.co.uk

A potential traumatic event that can mediate PTSD could literally be anything. This could be a life or death situation, physical and emotional violence or a huge emotional loss. Some people seems to experience such situations and be able to get on with their life but others can’t or don’t.

PTSD And Flash Backs

Take an extreme stressor. This could be a conflict in a war zone, a rape, physical violence or a car crash. In those moments the body will be seeped and drenched in a cocktail of stress hormones and neuro-transmitters. The Amygdala is hyper active and every cell in the body is doing the freeze, flight flight natural reaction.

With this chemical bodily infusion the Hippocampus, where short and long term conscious memories are made, literally shuts down and the amygdaloid ‘memories’ as of how to survive is quite rightly active. The amygdala is learning to promote the response of ‘how to survive’. Problems occur when this survival response becomes the norm or becomes a totally out of proportion response. This is PTSD.

What results is an EXTREME format of neuro-biological learning. IF a person survives there is an intense reaction and an intense learning. This learning is a body wisdom learning. It will not be conscious, that is too slow to save a life.

Environmental triggers, like a similar car, a loud noise or something or a little part of the trigger events in everyday life set of the survival response.

Using hypnotherapy for Eye Movement Integration Plus for PTSD to re-educate the unconscious response offer real ways for the nervous system to change a survival pattern in all the wrong circumstances into new way of being.

Hypnotherapy Newcastle – Generalised Anxiety Disorder ( GAD )

Clinical hypnotherapy for anxiety in Newcastle can help you mediate anxious responses that are extremely stressful and seem to serve no positive purpose. Newcastle hypnotherapy for generalised anxiety disorder ( GAD ) and helping you lean to be more at ease … because you learned to be anxious means you can learn to be at ease, which is our natural human state of being.

have you ever wondered WHY some people seem to be totally free of anxiety and other people, you? are often in a state of anxious arousal or anxious apprehension? Worrying about the future. This literally defines anxiety.Hypnotherapy Newcastle Anxiety GADAnxious arousal simply means that you are feeling anxious and anxious apprehension is more about thoughts and ideation of worry. Both of these have less than positive affects on mood, the nervous system and long term health.

No one begins life as a worrier. This makes perfect sense because to worry we need the intellectual capacity do it. Babies as Piaget put it are born into the world with a Sensory-Motor consciousness; they have no idea about death, growing old, losing a job or a partner. Babies are delivered in direct experience and that experience is all about the senses. And this has no past or future.

Adrenaline And The Amygdala

All of us mammals have a limbic system. The limbic system is a deep brain region that is all about emotions. Emotions here is defined as what we feel and NOT the meaning we attribute to what we are feeling. The neuro chemical biology of hate and anger is incredibly similar to what we feel with love and joy. The same neuro-chemicals are present in both states and it is the attributions of meanings that ‘consciously’ define out state, mood and long term temperaments.

Take a particularly negative stressor and the amygdala, a small nucleus in the limbic system, will become energetically active and will mediate a sympathetic nervous system response complete with danger and anxious arousal. Go for a run or play on a roller coaster and the sympathetic nervous system will activate BUT without the amygdala. The difference is massive.

Positive stressors, like running, a scary film or bungey jumping ( if you are that way inclined ) produce gluco-corticoids that mediate positive stress responses. When the amygdala is involved this equates to worry, negative stress and what we know as worry. It’s almost the same system, its the same system the difference is the meaning, conscious and unconscious, we make of experience.

There is almost always an adrenaline and noradrelanine release when the sympathetic nervous system activates, like being angry or in-love it is the meaning that is attributed to the physical sensations that are important.

Anxiety Your Body and Environment

Your brain is always receiving and processing information from your body. The psychologist William James proposed that the body actually has an emotion and then the brain makes sense of this. This is not a crazy or strange as this reads. If you are tense, your muscles are stiff and locked, the bio-feedback from your body will actually mediate your emotions. This is why a massage can feel so relaxing and stimulate a relaxed mood.

In a psychological experiment, conducted by Schacter in the 1950’s, it was discovered that your brain has been shown to attribute a bodily state , in this case anxiety to the immediate social environment.  This means if you are a setting where anxiety and worry are common place the feelings you feel will be attributed to the environment. Environment means people around you.

What You Can Anticipate From An Appointment

Each hypnotherapy Newcastle appointment with Nigel is a totally individual experience however as a minimalist basis for treatment we will most likely explore the following : How you do anxious? The most common way people make themselves anxious is talking to themselves, with the inner voice, in the following ways.

  • Talking at a way rapid speed
  • Beginning What If statements

Talking rapidly seems to have all of the ingredients to make you think faster. Beginning What If sentences and not finishing them or taking them to a logical extreme will tend to send the brain reeling and searching out answers, often unconscious and causing more anxiety.

By knowing how you do anxious thoughts you are now in a position, which will require effort on your part, to begin to learn how to make your self feel better.

We will find where you feel anxiety in your body of you have anxious arousal and use hypnosis as a body relaxation and combine this with hemispherical activity balancing exercises.

Hypnotherapy Newcastle for Anxiety, to help you relax your worrying mind, relax your body and learn some new strategies so you can worry less and strat living a more mentally calm emotional life. Call Nigel now on 0770 481 8467.

Newcastle Hypnotherapy Weight Loss – Nigel Hetherington

Hypnotherapy for weight loss in Newcastle and the North East because so very many people want the body beautiful and their idealised body shape. There are essentially two reasons people want to lose weigh. Obviously there are the physical aspects but there are also the psychological ones.

Hypnotherapy in Newcastle for weight loss is honestly not just about losing weight. There is a required focus on what losing weight will actually accomplish and mean for any client. What are the deeper values you will need to access when your size or shape changes because your psyche has changed in a way that supports a different set of psychologically driven eating behaviours?

Hypnotherapy Newcastle Weight Loss

Psychological Hunger – A Deeper Metaphor

There are two areas in the brain that are responsible for the biological trigger of eating and stopping eating. In the limbic system the hypothalamus, a cluster of dense functional neurons about the size of a grape mediate our physical appetites.  The ventromedial and lateral nuclei respectively monitor rising and falling glucose in the body and as so create the feeling of satiation and hunger.

Because the brain has evolved to utilise the same circuitry for both physical and abstract navigation in the world of body requirements and social and cultural requirements there is almost certainly a hunger for the psychological needs as well as the biological ones. Eating to excess or hungering for something other than food will be very easily confused neurologically.

If we eat food that is rancid we feel disgust and that same brain region, the insular cortex,  is also where we ‘feel’ moral disgust.  We feel the need for food but we can also feel other needs that are psychological. In order to satisfy a psychological need it is no surprise that we eat to alleviate the feelings of wanting something to satisfy the soul.

Why People Eat To Excess

It could be argued that eating is one way to combat negative feelings, that means when you are upset or ‘depressed’ it is likely ( 66% ) people become hyperphagic that is eat more carbohydrates to feel better and only one third of people when depressed become hypophagic eat less. Feed a cold and starve a fever.

This in the very general sense has everything to do with temporary moods or equally long term feelings of deprivation which causes mood to swing. Swing left, right and off centre. Eating something with carbs or sugar really does taste very good and albeit temporarily, is a stress reliever. The problems begin when eating becomes a comforter for stress and negative emotions. This is a really short term solution and not the most healthy by a long way.

In the US recent statistics suggest that over one third of people are obese. That is not just a bit overweight this is FAT! Being obese has massively strong correlations to health problems. Food is so very easily available and almost effortless to obtain. Think about all of the packaged ready meals or the ubiquitous all-you- can- eat buffets that attract so many people to sit a graze like happy cows chomping and gobbling up food.

Yo-Yo Dieting And Failure

Is this you? Begin a very well intentioned diet plan, stick to it for a day, a week or a month and then lose steam? Buy the latest dieting book, maybe even read it, and still hating being fat? Start stop, start stop … Yo-Yo! Self help books, self help audio and self help video all sell two things … hope and a miracle cure.

The self help library of products is a multi-million industry and unless you do actually do the exercises and practices as described is just filling the pockets of people other than you in terms of getting what you really want.

What you need to do is create long term and self powered, self motivated ways of creating the you you want to be and living the life you want to live. The crux for me is connecting and sponsoring a very real and honestly motivating psyche or mental state that powers your new behaviours and habits. In effect a new you that has access to the deepest reasons and motivation that drive forward the behaviours that make you take care of and nurture who you are.

What is often missing in all the failed attempts is a conscious understanding of why you need to lose weight and a really very long term commitment to investing in your health, happiness and personal evolution.

A Way Forward – Weight Loss Psychology

Before you seek any psychological, hypnotherapy or counselling ask yourself the following questions and you will already have one foot in the door to a lasting change.

  • What does losing weight actually mean?
  • What is important about losing weight?
  • What are the real important factors here?
  • What is driving me to lose weight?
  • What will be different when I have lost weight?
  • Where is this leading you towards?

When you have answers and this will equate to a honest and long term motivation, the kind that can prevent the Yo-Yo dieting trap and start you on a way forwards in life that is, as you think about this now, is not really to do with weight loss but instead becoming more of who you want to be …

Hypnotherapy Newcastle Phobia – Nigel Hetherington

Hypnotherapy Newcastle for helping you break free of debilitating phobias and fears. Phobias are known as irrational but they are perfectly rational when you have a conscious understanding and a neuro biological basis of how they are formed. Hypnotherapy Newcastle can help you to be free of phobic responses.

A true phobic response, should you see one or worse experience one, is really very dramatic. You will see and witness a person loosing all control of normal consciousness and watching them experiencing feeling the completely debilitating experience of a full blown traumatic stress response. This is clearly not the same as feeling fear albeit debilitating.

Hypnotherapy Newcastle Phobia

What a vast majority of clients I see for what they called phobias are really fears because a phobic response will activate a full freeze, flight or fight ( in that order ) response. A phobic response will feel like terror and your autonomic nervous system will pretty much take full control of you and as a result you will be quite literally incapacitated.

Hypnotherapy Newcastle is a psychological and neuro biological method for helping you to break the tyranny of ‘irrational’ phobic responses by attempting to rewire your neural networks that are responsible for phobic responses. There will be a trigger or triggers that cause the phobic response. Hypnotherapy Newcastle to help you de-couple your phobia triggers.

Phobias and Fears

Phobias and regular fears tend to be formed with a single or multiple occasion conditioning where there is both a stress response and activation of the amygdaloid bodies in the limbic system.  The amygdala is involved in a kind of less than conscious memory ( fear, phobic response ) and activates when a person feels fear or experiences a phobic response.

During a major stressor ACTH is poured out from the pituitary and causes release of glucocorticoids from the adrenal glands. When we survive a threatening or dangerous situation it is of high certitude that the levels of stress hormones, glucocorticoids in the body during and after the trauma are massively elevated.

For a phobic response to now be laid down neurologically speaking there needs to be a link, a connection between the the feelings in the body and some trigger. The trigger really could be just about anything and this is where the notion of an irrational phobia comes from.

other times the trigger is well known and seems to have an obvious link,  for instance, a spider for a person having a phobic response to spiders.  The traumatic incidence here could have been a child hood event where as a child a nest of 100’s of spiders fell into their hair and face.  The sympathetic nervous system explodes into action, a child terrified and the trigger is neurologically hard wired in.
